So uncharacteristic for me to actually put my books away that I didn't even think to check the shelf 😂

I love "Carmilla." It's the perfect blend of lyrical prose, gothic settings, and a quiet, haunting melancholy.

You've made me want to re-read the Amityville Horror. I remember reading it when I was in school and thought it was creepy and one of my friends would go off about it and how all this paranormal stuff actually happened. If I read it now as an adult I would probably think it was hilariously corny and probably terribly written.

I read The Amityville Horror when I was 10 years old and it scared me into nightmares...decades later, I read through some pages and realized it could've been written by a 10 year old. Such bad writing.

I had the same experience. I couldn’t imagine anything scarier back then. My god,t he pig. But it’s so terrible.

The Willows is a classic. While not fiction, you might enjoy Lovecraft's Supernatural Horror in Literature. It's still relevant today. Lots of good recommendations there though you have already gone over some of them.
Great Weird Tales (ed. Joshi) is a very good collection. The Dark Descent is a huge collection (over a thousand pages) of strange stories by many famous authors.

I love Gogol! You should read “Dead Souls,” it’s a hilarious satire.

THE VIY is certainly a masterpiece like Del Toro before Del Toro.

Amazingly there is a UA-cam audio of Algernon Blackwood made in 1948 reading his short story Pistol Against A Ghost.

Check out the Russian film Viy (1967). It's pretty short and a slow burn, but the crescendo is worth it.

I recently cried ugly tears over a book about an orc opening her own coffee shop....we cannot choose what literature touches us! 😂

Read The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood.
A Child alone with Strangers was one of my favorite books of the year. What part made you like it less? Curious :P

I read The Amityville Horror when I was much younger, the only thing that freaked me out was the mental image of the pig creature (Jodie?)

I read this book in the 70s, and it made me understand that sometimes books in the non-fiction section are total fiction. It's terrible what people can get away with. As you said, all of this nonsense has been debunked.
