Warren Buffett: There are Still Opportunities in the Market

  • Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting just wrapped up and there was one takeaway from our favorite Buffett & Munger duo that really stood out to me.
Let’s travel back to 1952. Warren Buffett has just married his Susie Buffett, and the two are traveling along the US west coast. Allegedly Warren Buffett filled the trunk of their car with annual reports from stock market companies that he wanted to do research on, even during their honeymoon. That’s dedication. Anyways, the married couple was visiting The Flamingo in Las Vegas because three fellow Omahans had just purchased a stake in the famous casino.
When they entered the Flamingo, the then 21-year-old Buffett announced:
“I’m gonna get rich. I mean, how can you miss? If people are willing to do this, you know, then this is a land of opportunity. Well, it’s the way it still is.”
Buffett is talking about making money in the stock market here. How did this casino crowd convince Buffett that he could become rich through stock market investing? And why does he say that it still applies in the stock market today?

I also talked about the holding period for stocks dropping massively over the years, and I'm glad to see more people bringing awareness to this. 5.5 months is way too short to even call it an investment. Even though there are countless (even recent) examples of how the long-term can be wonderful for our portfolios, the average investors seem to enjoy gambling more than actually investing, which is unfortunately seen in the fact that they underperform almost any type of asset over and over again. You too can easily outperform the average investor by creating a balanced portfolio, managing your spending/investing habits well and not letting your emotions dictate over your logic. Also, there might be a lot more opportunities in the near future if the market keeps performing the same way it did in the past couple of weeks, so make sure that you're prepared.

This is true to a point. But what happens if you buy a stock with the intention of holding it long term, but it rises in price over the short term to a point where a new investment in the stock would not perhaps be a good idea? This has happened to me twice in the past 4 months. First company i3 energy, listed on the London Stock Exchange. I bought it in January this year - and it has already doubled. Second company Southern Energy SOUC.L also on London. I bought it 6 weeks ago intending to hold long term, and it is already up 70%. Clearly generating these gains so soon is luck, but it raises the question of what do I do now?

@@aerialexplorer772 It depends on what you think they are worth. Of course, getting those returns so fast is very rare in the long run even though I've also had similar performances, but when it happens so fast and there are other opportunities and the price is above what you think is worth, you can trim the profits or even sell the whole position. Again, it all depends on your valuation. I am still holding some stocks on which I am up more than 200% in 2 years or less because there aren't better options that would give me exposure to those industries in the current market environment and I still think they are undervalued.

You must have a sound plan and constantly check the lines in order to survive the market; excellent investors/traders do not panic on the dips since that is when they generate their winnings.

Ok, but let's not forget that even in the 1980ies regular folks could get a stock quote only from the newspaper the next day or by calling your broker in many markets and you had to pay much higher transaction cost. I remember back then you'd even pay a fraction of transaction volume(!) on top of a fixed fee, imagine that! Today barriers are obviously much lower so that increases velocity.

Interesting that the holding period in the 30s is also quite low.
Is that an artefact of the data? No buyers before the 30s included?
If NOT, then the primary driver is probably increased access. A click of a button via the internet vs. a lengthy debate with your broker/advisor and potentially days until you know it's done.
Also, trading algos became a thing. Not sure if that's filtered out or not.

Maybe the reason why the holding period dropped since the 1980's was because of the e-mail? Were they using email back then for stock martket transactions?
Then in the graph, the holding period dropped even more since the 2000s.. maybe it is becuse of the internet?
So the more technology advances, the easier it is to do stock market transactions. And the easier the transactions are, the more people become careless in buying and selling stocks..
I don't mind. It's gonna get us, value investors rich 😀💰💰💰

    To The Swedish invesor
Warren was talking about CEOs and high managers at wall street coming to las Vegas gambling
He “ mr buffets” wondered that if those are the once do stock market investments in new york then he will be rich as those lose money in gambling without any plan / cautious
So if he invest in stock market his opponents ( sellers ) are reckless and have no temper in holding money 💰
So your video is missing a major part of warren presentation the other day
And mr munger was talking about speculation as it is a gambling mindset way out of investment personality which munger always talk about
Mr Swedish this time your video is not 100% unfortunately 😔

Buffett feels unkind to invest in oil at this time, because oil affects the livelihood of the general public. As a billionaire, he should assist the government to solve difficulties. It is not at this time that he publicly buys oil companies for his own interests, which is disappointing. Oil has a huge impact on the environment. All countries are pushing electric vehicles, solar energy, wind power, and ocean power, and more than 80 yuan. In the past, shale oil in the United States will also be turned on. How could oil prices soar and someone deliberately disrupt human progress.
