Famous composer in the sixties (Look through any window; Bus stop; For your love; No milk today); member of 10CC in the seventies (he is one of the composers of "I'm not in love"); member of the duo Wax UK in the eighties (with the hit "Right between the eyes"). Graham Gouldman is a rock legend!
Gouldman is now in the Songwriters Hall of Fame where he rightly belongs. 1965-66, what an incredible 2 years he had and it didn't end there as he continued to write great songs for his band 10CC.
Please tell me if I'm going blind, but the guys on both sides of Graham look identical. I think I'll have to ease off on whiskey or see my eye specialist.
In 2020 - what a clear, clean, beautiful rendition of his classic song, made popular by Herman's Hermits - when their lead singer was also 15-16 years old! Gouldman's voice - and all of their voices - so clear, and still so full of youth! They make this song sound so easy - but the chord changes, minor to major, and back again, with the mood of the lyrics as they change, while singing, is actually difficult. What a bunch of pro's. He wrote some GREAT songs - what an amazing ear for a subtle Hook, and beautiful chords and lyrics. Thanks for posting this. So many people are left out of the common history of music - and writers eclipsed by those who sang the songs they wrote, before singer/songwriters became the rule, and not the exception.
Read the book Wild Tales by Graham Nash. The Hollies went to visit Graham Goldman and were blown away that He had written Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window, and No Milk Today and He was only 15 at the time.
And what The Hollies (likely) didn't know when they first visited Graham Gouldman, to hear Gouldman play "Look Through Any Window" and "Bus Stop" is that Gouldman was a nephew of Hollies manager Mike Cohen.
I just LOVE this song! Wow, what a great story! I have loved hearing Herman’s Hermits version for 50 years, BUT, this tells us The Rest of The Story! Simply Beautiful! Thank You, Graham!! Peace and Love!! Steve
So talented! Have seen this group a few times, but the first time was in Napier NZ. Had just arrived there & saw they were performing that evening. Very grateful to get a couple of tickets in the ‘Gods’. Finished with Rubber Bullets - I was on my feet straightaway. Turned round at the end and everybody else was still seated. Still when you pass 60 you aren’t easily embarrassed!
We love Peter & the Hermits, of course. But it's NICE to hear the AUTHOR sing it. Btw, Hermits never quite did THESE backing vocal harmonies which are RICH and TIMELESS like 16th century minstrels in the 21st....Shakespeare would have LOVED this, I'm sure.
MOST fond Pop musical memory in category with all British Pop of the era. It was a WEALTH of style. ~an embarrassment of cultural riches. And also, hauntingly evocative of all common parts of life across the World
Way back in maybe 1970, I stumbled on this 45 of Graham Gouldman's at a second hand store.. I always loved the song when done by Herman's Hermits. I'm sure at that time I was unaware it was Graham's song. But absolutely loved it. I can't get enough of these youtube videos of Graham playing all my favorites from the '60's that he wrote. What a great song writer. So glad the bands that recorded his songs, didn't butcher them! I still consider "Bus Stop" as about my favorite song ever.
I saw Graham and co. perform this and loads of his other songs made famous by other artists plus all the 10cc songs at Southend yesterday and they were absolutely superb. It's even better when you see them sing live, the harmonies are spot on.
Loved n sang it since my childhood. Now I got the answers: who wrote it is the same man who wrote Loves not for me! How the interesting-felt-for-years’ symbol of no milk used was inspired from! Thank Gouldman for your music. God bless you in all.
All these golden nuggets of pop songs surely did brighten up our days back then. A never ending stream of really good songs that became the soundtracks to our young lives.

I ask if "you guys" know the expression "two up two down"? This expression refers to housing (started about 1875, but really post WWII) with just two rooms upstairs, two rooms downstairs. Bath, out back, maybe private for your family, perhaps shared.

Superb
What a lovely little story, and so glad that he took his dad’s advice.
Hyman Gouldman sometimes was called “Hyme the Rhyme” by his son Graham.
Gouldman is now in the Songwriters Hall of Fame where he rightly belongs. 1965-66, what an incredible 2 years he had and it didn't end there as he continued to write great songs for his band 10CC.
Graham Gouldman never charted as a solo artist but he gave so many great hits to rock music history...
Love it. I never knew Graham Gouldman wrote it. So glad we have his version here.
How about Look Through Any Window and Bus Stop for the Hollies? Tally Man for Jeff Beck. The list goes on and on.
Me 2. I thought it was the original singer or band called ... Herman what?
@@abcxyz-nd6xh Herman’s hermits, lead singer was Peter Noone

Yardbirds For Your Love as well.
What a great talent Graham Gouldman is.
I never knew who Graham Gouldman was even though I've loved his songs for decades. What a talent!
I was there. Fantastic night, Happy to meet the audience after the show. You can feel a very happy atmosphere on stage.
Please tell me if I'm going blind, but the guys on both sides of Graham look identical. I think I'll have to ease off on whiskey or see my eye specialist.
Herman's Hermits did a great job with this number...
They don't lose their essence wooo how beautiful they sing and play those guitars 😍😍😍😍
I've been singing his songs all my life! Thanks for sharing this!
Lovely!
And I love 10cc... met them once. Fun!

Peter (lead singer of Herman's Hermits) had baby face , but he was a few weeks away from his 20th birthday when record 'No milk today' was released.
Read the book Wild Tales by Graham Nash. The Hollies went to visit Graham Goldman and were blown away that He had written Bus Stop, Look Through Any Window, and No Milk Today and He was only 15 at the time.
Steve Paul And let’s give a shout-out to Graham’s loving supportive dad, nicknamed “Hyme the Rhyme” for the help he gave there as well!
And what The Hollies (likely) didn't know when they first visited Graham Gouldman, to hear Gouldman play "Look Through Any Window" and "Bus Stop" is that Gouldman was a nephew of Hollies manager Mike Cohen.
Wild Tales is a great look at that time.
He may have been a bit older than that (he would have been 15 in 1961), but he was definitely churning out hits while still in his teens.
I saw him in Carre in Amsterdam. Main act 10cc and this song was one of them as a warming up. Great artist and I enjoyed everey minute of it
What a great rendition of that song.
I just LOVE this song! Wow, what a great story! I have loved hearing Herman’s Hermits version for 50 years, BUT, this tells us The Rest of The Story! Simply Beautiful! Thank You, Graham!! Peace and Love!! Steve
This has always been one of my favorite of Graham's songs. It's amazing how even more beautiful it sounds when 30 strings are involved!
That's how sharp eyes count! ;-)
Fabulous! Now THAT'S a pop song!
What a beautiful song. I just heard the Herman's Hermits version today.
A lovely story...His dad must have been amazing..
Si,lo fue tanto para graham su padre,q cuando murió en el '91,le escribió la canción ready go to home,
Q tb la canta a ha,morten hatker,la incluyeron en uno de sus álbum,no recuerdo cual
WOW, a very pleasant surprise to catch your fantastic arrangement, and the vocals gave me goosebumps.
Graham Gouldman wrote this song for the Hermits when he was young. He also wrote for the Yardbirds and others. Look him up.
Such a brilliant artist!

NO MILK TODAY
"No milk today" - my love has gone away.
The Bottles stands forlorn
A symbol of the dawn
"No milk today" - it seems a common sight
But people passing by
Don't know the reason why
How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes - the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as Queen.
"No Milk Today" - it wasn't always so
The company was gay
We turned night into day
As music played - the faster did we dance
We felt it both at once
The start of our romance
How could they know just what this message means
The end of my hopes - the end of all my dreams
How could they know a palace there had been
Behind the door where my love reigned as Queen
"No milk today" - my love has gone away
The bottles stands forlorn
A symbol of the dawn....
But all that left is a place dark and lonely
A terraced house in a mean street back of town
Becomes a shrine when I think of you only
Just two up, two down
"No milk today" - it wasn't always so
The company was gay
We turned night into day
As music played - the faster did we dance
We felt it both at once
The start of our romance

He changed the lyrics a little bit.
Graham Gouldman is a genius. His resume is nothing less than incredible. Lookup BBC documentary, "I'm Not in Love: The Story of 10cc."

Harmonies & BGV's are sweet.
I remember when people left notes in the empty bottle for the milkman, such as 'one extra pasteurised.'
Superb harmonies as well
Minor key. I adore this song.
always loved the Hollies version of this. But Graham's is magic!
Ian Southward Recommend you to try listening to Herman’s Hermits’ version
News to me. I know that GG wrote ‘Bus Stop’ for the hollies but don’t think they ever did a version of this.
Excellente version acoustique 👍👍
