I mentioned a bit of Luce’s symbolism in the chat, but for those curious and to be more thorough: Luce is Italian for “light,” and she’s meant to encourage us to continually strife towards God and follow Jesus as the light of the world. Her yellow raincoat is a nod to the Vatican’s colors of yellow and white, and is distinct as a common jacket worn by those in storms, representing how a pilgrim’s journey can lead them through rough storms. There’s also a little logo on her jacket that is the Jubilee logo “Pilgrims of Hope” for 2025, which looks like waves of people holding fast to a cross with the lower half shaped like an anchor. She wears muddy boots because she’s a humble pilgrim on a journey, with them being green to represent the hope we have in God. The bordone, aka her walking stick, is also a common pilgrim tool especially for long, arduous journeys. She’s wearing a rosary, which is a huge devotional for members of the Church as it helps us lead a spiritual prayer life. I wanna say the coloring is based off something as well, but I’m not quite sure and the colors seem to change depending on the images I’ve come across. The seashells in her eyes are based off the scallop shells of the Camino de Santiago, or The Way of St. James, which is a popular pilgrimage the shells are associated with. Shell shaped items are also used during baptism, which is why her eyes are also a strong shade of blue. The blue hair I believe is mainly to give her a calm, optimistic appearance. But one can see an associated with Mary as Our Lady tends to be depicted with a blue veil. Don’t see these characters as much, but Luce also has a dog for her journey which represents friendship and companionship. The dog’s name is San Rocco, named after Saint Rocco who is the patron saint of pilgrims, dogs, invalids, along other things. There’s also a Dove (representing the holy spirit) that follows Luce around, as well as an angel representing God’s presences and can also show the role of guardian angels in people’s life. There’s 3 other companions set to be announced with Luce, but I haven’t see much information on them yet. They do have distinct color schemes and skin tones, so I’m sure they’ll be based on more things. So yeah, that’s Luce in a nutshell. Personally, I’m excited for the Church to recognize where the culture is going and is taking steps towards meeting people where they are at. I think for too long we, by which I mean those of us with religious leanings, have sat too far back in the media and cultural landscape, which has cost us a lot of ground in reaching out to others. As the stream mentioned and what’s been said for years, entertainment and media are part of the culture and everyone is affecting by it way more than they think. By us not at least dipping our toes into the culture stream, we’ve been laughably unaware just how strong the tides have been and how that’s affected the previous and current generations. I know plenty of religious folk who think we should be above such things and to keeping clinging to the past, but yet complain how bad everything is getting and don’t want to actually step in and fix things. The Church has already had great people like Mother Angelica from EWTN and the late Archbishop Fulten Sheen who promoted spreading the faith through the media, and that continues with countless channels, radio stations, and podcasters continuing the work. And even other Christian groups have realized just sitting back and not offering their own media alternatives isn’t doing them any good. Not doing anything is essentially giving other groups the chance to make their own mark on other people, especially the youth. I mentioned in another place, but it’s definitely better for the Church to reach out where people are to at least get her message out instead of shut herself behind her walls and traditions. I know quite a number of people who think the faith is “above” such things like Luce as an evangelization tool, but they really don’t offer much on the creation side of things. Just an insistence on following old playbooks that can work for some, but are nowhere near as useful or effective as they were in the past. No different than how us on the conservative side have bemoaned the state of society and entertainment media, but only a few have actually stepped up to the call of fixing things. Pointing out issues is important, but it’s just as important to come up and implement solutions that at least move things back to where they need to go.
Just to expand on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. I've stayed in a few cities that are on some of those routes, and the way is marked with shells. Although it would be extremely helpful to have a map or directions, a person could do the trip by finding and following the shells. There are free houses to stay along the way, and those are marked by the shoes of pilgrims hanging outside (iirc).

The Camino de Santiago has come up quite a bit during my research so maybe that’s where I’m being called to go. Honestly being led around by sea shells would make it pretty easy to follow and be a fun memory 😁

Also, the French are terrible at road signs let alone at laying shells along the way. So although it is possible, you really would need more direction than going from shell to shell. But yeah, people do this and you would be with good and I'd assume safe company. There are houses along the way for rest and support. I think it was mainly accidental on the meme side, at least with the Vatican 😅 it’s an old institution with members who are not very caught up with technology, thought that has been slowly changing. Pope Francis I know is pretty unplugged from most things, as he doesn’t carry a cell phone, doesn’t go onto social media, and barely likes to operate a landline. It’s definitely bitten him in the butt in the past, but I’ve grown to kind of respect it as I’ve noticed how my own habits and thoughts have been influenced by such things. I’m mostly sure the main Catholics involved with Luce have a general grasp on anime and pop culture, otherwise they wouldn’t have reached out to a well known creator/artist who is liked by the Japanese and understands such things.

To echo your comments about Luce. I doubt this was intentional, it had to have been inspired to be honest. As outlined (and I may be rusty with this) in Revelation, to us the Messiah (Jesus, Yeshua) looked meek and helpless a sacrificed lamb. In spiritual warfare we then see the Jesus transformed into a fierce warrior and would and did terrify foes. That's copied here with Luce. She looks like a harmless young girl, not terrifying at all, but yet in spiritual warfare is represented by Jesus with all the might and weight that he carries into that spiritual battle. The memes do a great job pointing this out, and it is just a joy to watch.
So, from what I have seen there is more info about the squirl that probably wasn't available about the squirrel. According to a couple news articles I have read said that the squirrel had bitten someone 2 days prior. It was taken and put down to be tested for rabies. Unfortunately, the only way to positively test for rabies is by cutting into the animal's brain tissue, it needs to be done because if rabies is not treated in humans prior to the symptoms showing up in the person it is almost always fatal for people, so it has to be caught in the animal early on for the sake of the person's life. Both squirrels and raccoons are known carriers of rabies with estimates for raccoons ranging anywhere from 10%-41% of the population depending on the study, squirrels are less likely to carry it but may still have it. Even if he had the licenses the animals would probably have been put down to protect the life of the person who was bitten. If there wasn't a bite incident I imagine the animals would have been simply confiscated and held till he could get the license or make other arrangements, (my opinion not as a lawyer so take with a grain of salt). Now this still leaves the issue of requiring a license to own the animal in the first place and if that government overreach.

Some things that may bear consideration as well; Can rabies be carried by an animal and that animal not present symptoms but still transmit it? Also with observation how long do you need to observe, bearing in mind that the person who was bitten had already lost 2 days of time, because if the person has to wait several days and becomes symptomatic during that period it becomes a death sentence for them, rabies is only really and reliably treatable if the vaccination is administered before the person becomes symptomatic,(again according to online research). Rabies is considered 100% fatal in humans if not treated, that having been said 1 source did say that 16 people (globally) have survived symptomatic rabies. Something else that should be weighed is the risk associated with just giving the vaccine as a matter of precaution cause while I did read that there are some side effects to it, it did seem like those were only possibilities, although a few could be severe in nature. Again, I am just basing everything here off internet research and am not an expert and would welcome expert opinions if any care to add to, comment on or correct outdated/erroneous info that I have presented if any.
