    Thanks for sharing!
Excited to see and hear these fiddles.

You and me both! Of course I have an idea of how violins will sound due to how the wood reacts and feels during making, but nothing beats hearing them for the first time.

That was enjoyable to watch. Fascinating to see something sophisticated precise and beautiful start to emerge through a few sharp tools and a bit of muscular effort.

Glad you enjoyed it! I’ll try to do a few more at key moments in the making process.

Dang that’s fast to get it to the rough form! The wood looks to be a joy to carve!

My first build is taking me ages and I’m finding many issues- I really should have just bought a good book to get me started but I was dreadfully poor when I got started trying to build my first fiddle.. your videos are inspiring me to keep going!

Great job Sir...your chisel and plane are really super sharp...do you do it with a grinding machine or just by hand?

Sharp kit is key! I use a belt sander to maintain the grinding angle, all subsequent sharpening by hand with the exception of an occasional pass on a buffing wheel. Perhaps I should do some videos on sharpening?

Disregard my question, I just found the limewood one being played, so I deleted it.

Beautiful work Grahame! Are you sure that gouge is wide enough? 😅 I’m carving my first back over the next few days with my great-grandfather’s chisels. Your videos make it all feel so much less daunting than the ‘only-my-way-is-right-and-give-up-if-it’s-not- perfect’ brigade.

Thanks, yes the gouge is a bit excessive - but I love it. I can't help myself when I find an old tool I want!! Thanks for the comment about the video, I do aim to be of assistance rather than a "gatekeeper" to forays in the violin making world.

How wide is that first big gouge? Looks about 2” or 50mm….

Its very useful vid. Now I just understand how this works. I don't have any experience with wood working or making violin .. but i would love to do it at home . Even i don't have tools required. I started to draw it on cad software its really challenging later on i figured out that in real life its easier than the software...
Now 2 things i didn't know yet how i can make a template for side views arching if i have the wood block after cutting outlines how i measure the slop on the violin face . What is the starting of the wood block thickness before i start any thing .. maple and spruce is not available in my country .. but i still want to try making a violin at home

Absolutely facinating. I dabble with reclaimed wood..bit of sculpture, minor instrument repair...So good to see a real craftsman at work.

Glad you enjoyed it, you remind me I must do a bit of carving sculpture soon (that won’t be on video though!!)
