Hey, Sherry, white woman here who turned 60 last August - I totally agree with you -- when I was a teenage and in my early 20's, I lived in Milwaukee - had plenty of friends of different ethnicities.. and even though I was told to beware of certain neighborhoods, I never felt threatened by "black people" - yeah, some guys would give some catcalls, etc. but so did the white guys... (yeah, when I was 18-20 I used to be cute - lol) -- I moved to Boston area and was really surprised by the racism there... I just figured "well, the midwest is much better about that..." imagine my shock a decade or so later about how far BACK we had gone... makes me very sad and frustrated -- I now live back in Wisconsin in a small town between MKE and Madison -- around here, it's VERY white -- and I occasionally hear off-hand comments -- I confront the people that I know who make such ignorant statements... I like to think in a way that doesn't challenge them intellectually - but makes them, perhaps, think a bit... ? IDK -

Marvin Gaye was a very talented artist whose music still has relevance today. What's Going On is my personal number one favorite song. As a teenager when this song first came out, it moved me then, and it moves me still. Please take a listen to the song without the video...the original song that begins differently than how it was played in this video. It's a historic piece of music and a masterpiece all on its own.

I have always loved Marvin Gaye. His music is iconic. His sound and lyrics were so important in the era of civil rights, Vietnam protests, women rights, etc. Gender and the color of skin wasn't important. Marvin Gaye was wonderful man. He's a treasure. Thumbs up to you Twon. 💗

I was born in 1955. I was in third grade when a Birmingham church was bombed, killing four innocent girls. Then a couple months later Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. Five years later I was in eighth grade and Bobby Kennedy and Dr M L King where assassinated. In the meantime poor young men were being drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. In 1971, when I was in high school this song was a protest anthem, as some of my brother’s friends were drafted and killed in Vietnam. Fifty years later we haven’t gained much ground.

I think the biggest problem, the definite root of our problems in society today, is the breakdown of the family. It breeds poverty, which breeds resentment, crime, addiction, you name it.
I'm not saying a young woman can't successfully raise outstanding adults by herself because it obviously happens all the time and I'm in awe of them. All the respect in the world for that.
But when you have a man and a woman, (or any gender combo) loving each other and putting their children above all else, the odds are so much better for all involved.
The key though to more strong families is more (much much more) better, good paying jobs and affordable housing.

I've loved this song for so long - it taps in to the message everyone with wisdom rests on - without love and striving to come together there is only violence and misery. I don't know why I've always loved Black American music (I'm a freckly lass from Wales, UK) of this era - Otis Redding, Little Richard, Nina Simone, Soloman Burke, to name but a few, but it must be part of why the UK loved Blues and Rock n Roll from the moment the records came off the ships we couldn't get enough, and all our best bands were obsessed from the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc etc etc to our very own Tom Jones, 20th century music was born from Black American music. Thankyou for reacting to this music so I can experience it afresh, it was very moving - I travelled from a difficult start to good place now and let music be my guide (I judge people by their music and tend to know who the good guys are as a result) A big Cwtch (hug) to you, and all the good people in USA at this time

I become emotional whenever I listen to this, and tears begin flowing very soon into it, and continue throughout. I was 10 when MLK Jr. was shot, and when Marvin sang this a few years later, I thought it was a beacon of hope. It was a beautiful call to see a light in the darkness of that time. "We got to find a way..." I vowed to always try, and I often wonder if I tried hard enough. Even in recent conversations with people of color, I hear many losing hope. We must try. Until I die, I will try.

Based partly on his observations of the world, and partly on letters his brother sent him while he was fighting in the vietnam war. The whole album is an incredible peice of art. And sadly it still rings just as true today as it did in the 70s.

We remained friends all the way through high school, even though we went to different ones. Parents, society teaches hate, judge a person by their heart, their spirit...... I was lucky enough to see him once in concert. He was amazing, but the audience was screaming & talking/commenting to him through most of it, so it ruined it for me, but what I did hear, was excellent. Sad that his own father was jealous of him, and was a preacher & didn't like his lifestyle, and hated what he represented, and shot/killed him right in front of his own mother, who adored him. (part of his jealousy) A lot of what he expressed was happening right in his own family. Tragic...Great music...

Marvin used to perform in a nice Tuxedo always with clean shaved face. At the end of the '60s he became more aware or awake if you will about how the society. Black people were still regarded as second grade humans and lots of segregation were still around. His brother who served in Vietnam along with many other soldiers were treated like paria by the authorities. So one day he walked into the office of Berry Gordy (founder/CEO of Motown) and told him about his next project. Berry freaked out badly and said no way! Well Marvin wouldn't take no for an answer and said "if i can't do this i won't do anything further for Motown"! When realizing he could lose his biggest artist Berry eventually gave in besides the family dinners might have become kinda akward since Berry also happened to be Marvin's father in law. This is by far his best album he was right not taking no for an answer.

Twon,Brother,Brother I can see you are troubled and who can blame you? I hope by the time you reach my age there will be some calm as Marvin sings about. Your country is in trouble my friend and hopefully it can heal itself.

Im 51 yrs old and never understood why people treat others like shit. People wake up, we are all the same. Yeah others all more well off than others. But that still doesn't make right. I always treat others like you want to be treated. Only if ..... Others would raise all their children that way.

Oh dont say you are not afraid of anything...only a smart man a real man, is man enough to cry and man enough to admit he is afraid..Saying nothing scares you is not even in the realm of reality.

This album will forever be one of the greatest works of art in American history. I will say my brother I have to disagree with you on the trump supporters being racist idea. I voted for trump and many others like myself thought the George Floyd killing was evil. unfortunately racism still exists but i think it can come from anywhere and we just have to embrace love. Dope video nonetheless 💪🏽

Such a powerful song. I think they should play this video and song in every high school in the United States. I'm a young white girl and I have never looked at other people as different colors. We're all the same. We're all humans. That's all.
