During my broadcast career, I woked on most of the tape machines that were made from the 50's through the 90's. This plugin is most of the maintenance nightmares from my early career.
The Squeal function would have something to do with electronic feedback which could be a breakdown in the electronics. In tube electronics [early Ampex machines] it could be a microphonic tube. Bias bleed is a strong possibility as early Ampex tube electronics would exibit that problem.
Flutter can be caused by excessive capstan wear. Bad capstan bearings can also cause rumble.
Phasing can be caused by poor azimuth adjustment or badly worn tape lifter or guides.
Wow can be caused by a badly worn pinch roller or improper tension adjustment or both.
Most of that "warm tape and transformer" sound is a result of hysteresis loss.
I started recording in the early 70's and I've always been most interested in the most accurate means of recording I could afford. My goal was and still is to make recordings that accurately reflect what I heard at the event. In studio, I always endevored to achieve the most accurate capture of what I heard in the room.
I would point out that back in the 70's and 80's we would not reuse master session tapes, once the tracking and master mixing was done the session master was archived. This was due to the high frequency loss due to oxide shed, edge damage and hysteresis loss. If the tape was reused for some non critical project it would have to be demagnetized to eliminate ghost audio in the track edges. Huge demagnetizers were used, don't wear a watch nearby. By the 80's 2" session masters were typically run at 30 IPS for about 15 minutes of TRT. Way too many times we'd have tapes run out on a take. I just hated the sound of tape flap runout.

Always amazes me that sound engineers today seem obsessed with tape? as if its the magic in the mix ? I agree with all of the above and spent too many hours trying to eliminate tape machine idiosyncrasies'. I will certainly not be pushing any of my audio through this plug in but for those interested in this sort of thing...then it sounds pretty much spot on...and gives me the shivers of times gone bye.

@@circlemover tape is one of the most beautiful sounding things ever created. very 3d sounding. but i will admit, my reel to reel recorder is packed away collecting dust these days... i would rather use plugins to do the trick. skip out on all the maintenance etc. rofl.

    • @circlemover

@@jamescuttsmusicjcm5013 Thanks for the comment although the effect of distance and height in a mix, is down to the skill of of the engineer using close and distant mic technique and reverb glue! hard instrumentation - like brass - can be set back and high up. Soft instruments - like wind and flute - can come forward and low. If this sort of thing floats your boat. Vocals can do both of course. One thing I will say in defense of recording on good quality tape...it can saturate high energy transients of high frequencies which adds a certain quality to the sound of the audio. This, as you know, can not be replicated in the digital domain. Some believe that analog is king because of this. Its a question of taste in the end. I'm with you on the no maintenance mate!

I love the "dirty tape" emulation of Softube. It really-really works on material that needs to have less harsh highs and the "fake stereo" mode or the "decoupled" mode is also excellent at bringing stereo material wider (it also introduces kind of phasing in mono, but listening on a phone speaker and a laptop speaker was pleasant). So, I started using in mixes a lot. It is especially shining on very digital synth sounds. Probably it is not super realistic, but it is great adding that organic movement.

Fun fact: layering noise on a mix will almost always cause a form of frequency masking that is very flattering to most frequencies, especially hi-mids and above. This is why EDM producers layer white noise or crowd noise into their mixes, aside from filling out the frequency spectrum. I believe this is just one reason why tape is so flattering to sources and mixdowns.

Tape squeal is when the tape sticks to the playback head. I'm not sure exactly what causes the squealing, maybe the tape is vibrating on playback head and the movement simulates higher frequency sound. Radio shack used to sell a tape head lubrication fluid that helped.

Hiss is more of a [production than a mixing tool, it does make things sound vintage, same with vinyl crackle its a nostalgia thing. It does depend on the noise though, I do like the noise in cymatic origin that thing is just a lofi machine. EDM uses white noise all the time as an effect and hiss isn't disimilar. For mixing plugins I think being able to turn it off is important.

Still waiting for the holy grail tape emulation plugin. My late father was a musician and he took me and my brother to every recording session in the late 70's up to the early 90's. The sound I remember from the big old analog recorders ( for example an Ampex tape on a 24 track MCI ) was so warm and thick, almost creamy with pleasant highs. I do remember that sound very vividly like the way many control rooms were full of smoke as most engineers were smoking back then. None of the current emulation plugins imparts THAT sound. On tracks like Dreams by Fleetwood Mac you still hear a little of that magic. Mostly on Vinyl or cassette tape but even slightly on CD or streaming services.

Sorry, we need to talk about Darude’s atrocious use of an E in the melody right on the third chord which is a B major. WTaF? Sounds horrible! Use B minor or Eb in the melody! Or something.

I have the denise plugins and I tried desperately to like them, but I just couldn't like them. They aren't well-designed imo, like the gui of all their plugins is too similar, and they sound less affective than a lot of my other plugins I use in my arsenal. These plugins would probably be alright for a new producer who's looking for cheap but subtle effects to play with in their more minimal productions.

There are so many plugins you have not reviewed yet and then you review new versions of some plugins for second time, it is getting repetitive.
