Once you notice this happen, unless you have some other good reason to pick a lane (e.g. an exit coming), just keep you lane and zipper close-in to the closure point. Ironically, polite driver behavior typically leads to a bias toward early-merge, and against zipper merge, which becomes erroneously thought of as "cutting in line" and "the reason we're backed up". The backup is about the carrying capacity of the open lanes, or because you were instructed to slow (by signs, highway patrol or flaggers, say). Highway traffic isn't like railcars on a train. Railcars have fixed connections. Those semi-theoretical "road trains" of vehicles all have sensor-driven communications between them to artificially boost their lane's carrying capacity and keep traffic free flowing when following distance would otherwise make this unsafe. On today's highways still, drivers are independent, isolated from each other in a realtime communications context, have independent reaction times, and are required to be prudent to avoid accidents. That means maintaining following distances that permit them to react to the unexpected. And that means only X amount of vehicles can pass a given point at Y speed. X doubles because a lane closes, Y may be forced down by dynamic processes. It's no one's fault...it's the math of it. Appeal to a road engineer if you would like to be convinced.

you did it the right way. The proper way to merge in those situations is to "zipper" traffic together at the merge point, not 5 miles before. Its been proven to be the most effective way to move traffic
you clearly don't drive a truck,, assuming your average driver knows how to properly merge into traffic To be honest your average person probably has trouble even using their zipper on their jeans
The merge is like a funnel. Only so much can pass thru at a time. Zipper merges aren’t really “efficient “. Same volume going through a choke point. Really no difference.
I personally like the zipper merge more because it keeps entitled asshats from shoving their way to the front as they pass folks who already merged. If everyone stays to their lane and takes turns properly, then those asshats are stuck and can’t cut the line.

Where the barriers start, that's where you zipper merge. If the asphalt is open to traffic, you use it, especially in a traffic jam. That's how it works here in the Netherlands.
I think you handled the situation really well. The thing is, adults are just kids in big bodies. They are full of jealousy and childish behavior. I will use different ways to merge in such situations. If traffic is light and traveling at a decent rate of speed, I will merge sooner. If traffic is backed up and slow, I will attempt to use the "zipper merge", which to me is traffic using both lanes up to the merge point and then taking turns merging.
I agree with you. The biggest complaint I have is those people who refuse to use the "zipper merge", they will do everything in their power to not let you in.
I've come around on this too. Over in Europe they use the zipper method which is what this is. Works way better. We need to adopt it more in this country.
The reason the traffic didn't speed up as the traffic merged into one lane is that everyone wants to have a good sticky beak at what's going on, hence once you pass the wreck site the traffic mysteriously disappears
@@craigcostley4310 Cops today will not stand there and hurry you along like they used to. Arms get tired and possible secondary misshap maybe due to cops action.
Everyone wants to see the carnage, but when they do see a mangled dead body, they regret it. I saw a guy burned to a crisp, sitting upright behind the wheel of his pickup truck. He must have died instantly, after colliding into the back of a garbage truck. That was 35 years ago, and it was so horrible, that the image is still with me.
Yep! Whether it's an accident scene or construction! Been havin that all last week on I-90 before Snoqualmie pass. Five mile back up cause it goes to one lane. Yet the posted speed limit change is 55 or 40MPH. Yet that traffic disappears after the roadwork. All it takes is a few cars or trucks or whatever to slow way down and thus the backup occurs. It'd be far less if people weren't conditioned to think "25MPH in a work zone" which is on normal city or residential streets. But with an accident it's people rubbernecking to see, same difference either way.
@@KadeKillz I've actually seen big backups in Cincinnati, because someone had a flat and was changing their tire well away from the road. Cincinatians will rubberneck over anything, that doesn't draw attention anywhere else in the country.

9:15, My mom was working at a TA truck stop in WI recently and eventually just quit the job. I guess there was a lot of sketchy stuff that was going on and they almost never cleaned anything. She talked about how there was often rats, maggots and roaches in the kitchen area. Food that was left out that people didn't purchase they'd just store in the back for the next day, even if it was going bad or already went bad. The internet would constantly go down and not work for whole days. The label machine would constantly stop working. The place was breaking quite a few state codes.
Always enjoy your videos Steve. Everyone always in a big hurry. Force their way into a merge to be in front just to be sitting beside you at the next traffic light. Everyone in a huge hurry. Slow down a little and live longer. Be safe out there on the road!
You are 100% correct. It is called a "zipper merge" and is far more efficient than a single line of traffic running for 10 miles beside an empty lane. If the signage was changed it might help the lemmings figure it out. Instead of just "right lane closed ahead" they could add, "merge left in 3 miles"".
What a lovely spot to be hitch hiking! That guy looked like he was trying to get run over by a semi - trying to make that turn, just suicidle mindlessness!
Throwing you some love here. Once drivers get used to the concept of a 'zipper merge' and actually DO merge let/right/left/right where the road goes from two to one lane it's actually amazing how well it works. The biggest issue with the those attempting to PREVENT smooth merging at the merge point is that everyone tries to stay SO CLOSE together to attempt to prevent the open lane from being used, end up doing skinny pedal, wide pedal, skinny pedal, wide pedal stopping and starting. If you don't have to worry that some jerk might cut in front of you to gain those precious 50 ft, you can hang back a little, leave a gap, stay in a gear and roll smoothly. In Michigan the law IS zipper merge!
Just about to say that. Funny as on base we are for most part kind drivers like we know how to drive. Only two gates to exit base and like muscle memory. We zipper 1to1 when even don't have to yield to one road.

I used to take my boys to view trucks at our local truck stops & sit there for a bit. It was scary sometimes.😳 I enjoyed the various views you had set up. I’m sure you did figure out what truck he was in. I always had a CB in every vehicle I’ve owned. I even had a little 9 volt CB that I could put on my bike that would only pick up very local stuff. I could monitor channel 19. Loved it! The terrible language that you hear now is quite a bummer & frequently you hear someone threatening another driver. Most of that is just uncalled for & shows their ignorance! Merging…it doesn’t mean that you swerve over on the berm & get around everyone. I usually tell people to be patient & polite for we’re all out here trying to get somewhere. There’s not much professionalism anymore among the drivers. To all of our truckers out there…We appreciate you & what you do! 🥰 It’s not an easy life out on the road. Good stuff, Steve! 🥰🤩✌️
I’m the same. I run till the end and merge. MO actually has it posted use both lanes zipper merge at the end. But I always get people cussing me on the CB. I don’t care though. Been doing this for 23 years. And I’ll do it my way. Love the Pete cab over as well. I’ve driven many back years ago. Safe travels sir.
@31:50 It's called a zipper merge. It's a proven fact that it's best to use the whole highway and then merge one for one with a zipper merge. Let the haters hate, that's what they do best. You did it right!
One thing you can say about the TA and Petro's, you rarely have a hard time getting out. I hate loves and pilots, for the simple fact, they are time killers. 😒
There are literally hundreds of "zipper merge" lanes after a two lane signal crossing, if everyone cooperates it works well. They are effective because the intersection can get at least twice as many cars through before the light changes, then there is plenty of time for drivers to sort it out once they are through the light. Same thing on your example, many more vehicles can arrive at the merge point when in two lanes!
Nothing unsafe about it, it's called zipper merging, if people would use both lanes up until the point of merge, and then 1-1 merge, traffic would move a lot faster.
When you got no self control because of a little traffic, it’s time to hang up the keys and park it. He’s got issues beyond a little impatience. Somebody probably died in that wreck.

I used to be the person that got over as soon as the sign stated which lane was closed. It would always irritate me when others would cheat the line.
The reason the traffic didn't speed up as the traffic merged into one lane is that everyone wants to have a good sticky beak at what's going on, hence once you pass the wreck site the traffic mysteriously disappears
amen to this comment!
Thanks for the ride! Truly enjoyed it! Stay save keep rolling, FSC.
Steve you keep on trucking and do it the way you want to. Your channel is my favorite out of all the trucking channels i watch. I like your no bullshit attitude about things you are you and that's the way a person should live
That was a great great comeback Steve! Loved it!!! Shame on that little minded rascit jerk, for dissing a cabover slapping old schooler!
Tell them Steve. We don't need people like that, hauling goods Fer everyone.
Respect goes a long way.
I'm from Michigan and nobody I see zipper merges
Just about to say that. Funny as on base we are for most part kind drivers like we know how to drive. Only two gates to exit base and like muscle memory. We zipper 1to1 when even don't have to yield to one road.
Great video Steve really enjoy all the camera angles and your commentary. Let the haters hate and you do you it will all work out in the end stay safe Steve.

As far as I remember you're supposed to run both lanes to the merge point. Just saying. And, of course he isn't going to tell you where he is. Stay safe.
Love your videos! The angles and placement of the cameras are fantastic, bud! And it’s called a “zipper merge”. That’s what you were practicing and it’s been proven to be more effective and efficient. I’ll never understand the mindset of some drivers who block the lane miles before it actually closed, inevitably only moving the arbitrary bottleneck back. I see nothing wrong in what you did.

Well my friend it sure got awful quiet all the sudden lol
I honestly cannot stand when other drivers want to give me commands in my truck. That I paid for. That I own. That I pay IRP tags for. That I pay IFTA taxes on. Speed up, slow down, move over, on and on and on. I never have once had a good reason to order anyone out on the road and it has always been great for me. No hassle. Its always to ones giving commands and yelling on the CB always have an issue going on.
I always order them to drive their own truck.
You wouldn't believe how many guys bitch about me being in the right lane, and going 55 mph. I refuse to drive 65 mph when that's the speed the truck is governed at, because you can never pass anyone when you need to, and you are left hanging in the left lane.
Now I get bitched at for staying in the right lane!
Over here in Minnesota it's called the zipper merge, they post signs saying to use both lanes during backups.
Steve you have a great outlook on life! We all bleed the same and I'm like you I don't look at color I look at the person and how they act. I love how you shut the truck driver up quick. I have Verizon and a Samsung S20 Ultra, for now. I had the same issues with 5G as well, and used an app called Samsung Band Selector to force my signal on 4G only. BUT it seems to have been patched a few months ago, and the app no longer functions as it once did. I just get an error if I try to go into the band selection. Even going into the connection settings in my phone doesn't always work anymore.
I'm considering trying out Starlink for my truck eventually. A friend of mine has tried the beta kits in the past and had good results at his house, and now they supposedly have kits specifically for trucks and RVs. Could be interesting to compare to my Verizon data service I'm using now.

I was into CB radio back in late 70's when they were popular with 4 wheelers to and it was a happier talk on the radio then and zero trash talk or cussing words for effect. Even the LEO's had em. Nowadays you can't have the CB on with kids in the vehicle or decent women. Sad
All the white people can come to this channel to express their racist hatred for black people but be nice about it. Steve, I want to say 2 things:
1) It is good you caught that racist trucker on camera saying what he said (and letting him know about his "gotcha" moment)
2) Let us all pray for those who were involved in that crash (hopefully the driver of that burned-out one is still alive)

O-H-I-O Porter greetings.🇺🇸 You never know what to expect when you’re in a truck stop. I have seen some weird things there, things that you may only see in certain few areas.

I wonder how far that flatbed made it before he realized the plastic dragging the road?
- He pulled over right past the wreck area.
I'm with you....all lanes to the merge ...then zipper together
@31:50 It's called a zipper merge. It's a proven fact that it's best to use the whole highway and then merge one for one with a zipper merge. Let the haters hate, that's what they do best. You did it right!
Exactly, It just works. But people will always think they know it better and act all kinds of immature about it.
It's a shame really,
That guy is a real professional good response Steve
One thing you can say about the TA and Petro's, you rarely have a hard time getting out. I hate loves and pilots, for the simple fact, they are time killers. 😒
There are literally hundreds of "zipper merge" lanes after a two lane signal crossing, if everyone cooperates it works well. They are effective because the intersection can get at least twice as many cars through before the light changes, then there is plenty of time for drivers to sort it out once they are through the light.
Same thing on your example, many more vehicles can arrive at the merge point when in two lanes!
Nothing unsafe about it, it's called zipper merging, if people would use both lanes up until the point of merge, and then 1-1 merge, traffic would move a lot faster.
an APU would be a good add-on to Orwell. keep the batteries charged, run the AC and heater, and save fuel in the process
I actually had a hunch that you served but never expected it to be true

When you got no self control because of a little traffic, it’s time to hang up the keys and park it. He’s got issues beyond a little impatience. Somebody probably died in that wreck.

I've been driving for 11 years and that is exactly why I've never put a CB in my trucks. It's a useful tool sometimes but the racist BS is too much.
I used to be the person that got over as soon as the sign stated which lane was closed. It would always irritate me when others would cheat the line. However that being said I have since learned that you are supposed to use BOTH lanes up to the merge point then zipper in. The problem is that people cause bigger congestion trying to box people out.

I don’t criticize you at all you were doing what was the right thing to do it kept traffic moving. I’d much rather go through traffic like this than when they have the rolling lane blocked! In my opinion just block one lane as far back as you need
zipper zipper, is the Best way, just like you said, it keeps traffic for not backing up further than it needs to be. 1 mile can go to 3 miles if you lineup. ( driver ED 101 zipper, zipper ) use both line to the end,
