  • In 2021, Peyton Manning was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame, and Trey Wingo sat down for an exclusive interview with Archie Manning to dig into the Manning family legacy. You might be surprised that Archie confided that the “Hall of Fame is nothing that never, ever entered my mind, and I never heard [Peyton] say it.” That doesn’t stop fans of the Manning family speculating about Eli’s chances of an induction, or the young Arch Manning’s chances of a successful career ahead of him. But it started with Archie Manning as the second overall pick in the 1971 draft, playing quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings, and ending his career with the Houston Oilers in 1983. In this episode of More Than Football On Location, you will learn how each of Archie's sons - Cooper, Peyton, and Eli Manning - have all achieved success in their own respects, and how fortunate, appreciative, and blessed their family has been over the years.

You won’t meet a more genuine person than Archie Manning. Peyton played my high school in my hometown for the state championship in baseball in 93. I met him at his restaurant before the Saints Bears postseason game and he asked me where I was from and he remembered the the restaurant he took them to after they lost. He’s really a great guy. He’s still a legend to us Saints fans.

Having Peyton Manning was like having a Quarterback and an offensive coordinator all in one.

Archie was the NFC Player of the Year in 1978. Let that sink in, because for anyone to achieve that on that Saints team back was almost unimaginable. He achieved that with Tarkington, Staubach, and Bartkowski having great years in the same Conference🏈

Friends...fellow football fans....if you didn't grow up in Mississippi back in the day you simply cannot imagine what Archie Manning means to the diehard fans. I was born in Oxford, MS two years before Archie left Drew, MS to bring his immense talent to Ole Miss. Just a few years prior Ole Miss had been a national powerhouse in football, and Archie was seen as the savior that would restore the Rebels to former glory.

I agree 1000%! I am a couple of years younger than Archie and went Southern Miss (USM), but loved to watch Archie play. My whole family were fans. I encourage everyone to watch the documentary "Book of Manning". It is evidence of what a wonderful man he is.

I for one admired Archie ( Steeler Fan) with the Saints. He like the Steeler teams then were BAD. Watch a few of his games runnin for his life, taking a hit get up back in the huddle. To watch the success his sons have had Wow. I admire the Manning Family as I think all pro, college fans do etc. All stems from proper upbringin', faith and living a good life. GOD Bless the Mannings. AMEN

I have a pic I took off TV where Payton is standing on about the Broncos 10 yard line, time out, and Payton is standing next to a ref. The Ref reaches up and uses his hand to massage Payton's neck. I have never seen that before. Respect.

I believe it was 1972 when Ole Miss played LSU in Baton Rouge. LSU was highly ranked, IIRC. Bert Jones, the QB for LSU, drove down the field and threw a pass to the fullback on the last play of the game to win the game. The stadium was literally shaking. Apparently, it registered on the Richter scale. Will never forget that game.

What a legacy this family has. I remember seeing Archie play in college and having to endure playing for a bad Saints and Oilers teams in the NFL. Would have been nice to see how good he could've been on a good team. Peyton's record speaks for itself. As for Eli in the HOF, I'm a bit prejudice beiing a lifetime Giants fan who suffered through some lean years. If the HOF is based strictly on wins/losses, no way Eli gets in. If it;s based on longevity, big wins, SB wins and what he meant to the Giants, he's in!. There's always the arguement the Giants didn't make many post seasons while he played. But when they did, he won. Look at the records of guys like Aaron Rogers, Drew Brees, one SB win dispite all the stats. Great interview though.

Awesome interview…only one teeny tiny thing missing: I woulda liked to hear Archie’s thoughts about the Saints finally winning a Super Bowl, and it being at the expense of Peyton.

@Jeremy Crandall - i suspect I am speaking for most, if not all, Louisiana natives when I say this - that had to be the most difficult and painful football game to watch. Yes we love our Saints, but how can anyone from the Boot not cheer for a Manning? You won, and lost, with either outcome.

I worked with my grandson quite a bit on his baseball plays. He is a great pitcher. He has a ball that is natural for him to throw and it has crazy movement. I was a ok player in baseball in high school. I mostly pitched. I was a slop clean up pitcher when the team was losing big. But I did get my turns as closer. My grandson could not play baseball during Covid. My grandson started playing basketball with his friends. He became pretty good at it. Once play resume he went to his parent's and told them he was done playing baseball. He wanted to play basketball. His parent said he would have to talk to me and get my approval. So he came to my house. He asked if we could talk in my office. And he tells me is quitting baseball to play basketball. I did not say anything for a minute. But I knew I had to support his decision. I told him I do not care what sport he plays. He has to play a sport. He was not going to sit in his room playing PlayStation. He started playing. He was not very good. He is small and basketball players are tall usually. His parent's got him a coach and his play really turned around. A Travel Basketball team scouted him in late 2022. So he decided to play. He made it to the National Championships in Tampa Florida. His team placed 2nd. Do I want him to play baseball, yup I sure do. But with his success in basketball and he loves to play basketball. I will have to put baseball on the back burner.

I'm a Patriots fan and I love the Mannings. Peyton was an honorable and worthwhile foe. Eli was a calm and humble competitor and if he gets into the Hall of Fame it won't be because he won two Super Bowls it will be because of who he won those two Super Bowls against. And Archie is a decent man that raised a decent family with all the values we should aspire to. Wow, do I miss the Peyton/Tom rivalry! We don't see anything like that now... will we see it again?

You are a great person and were and are a great player. I heard after that, a QB coach tried to change your style and not make the most of the way you played. There are a few Saints that I would throw a block for and number 8 is one that I would!!!!! Go Saints!!!!

Man, we start playing football, full pads and helmet, here in Texas at 6 years old. Your playin three different divisions PeeWee, Midget and AAA... then Junior high, then freshman team, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Starting at 6 matters.
That is why Texas produces so many great players.

Disagree with Archie. Joe Namath did not deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Even accounting for the average play in his time, he sucked. If he got, Eli should get in. Eli is 10,000x better at QB than Namath.

You obviously don't know anything about the times that NAMATH played in regards to NAMATH making the AFL legitimate by the NYJ winning superbowl III, prior to the AFL-NFL merger. Watch the entire game it is on UA-cam with the original NBC broadcast. Also in 1967 NAMATH in a 14 game season threw for 4000+ yards.
