100 All Analog In Print Reissued Records You Should Own

  • Okay, I got wrong the The Who's "Tommy"'s original issue date (I said November '68, was May '69) otherwise all of the information should be correct. Here's 100 recommended all-analog LP reissues worth owning. The video runs two hours so unless you are masochistic, you might want to watch in shorter segments but covering 100 LPs took time! Plus there are the usual fun stories interspersed throughout.
For a full written list see the story on the analogPlanet website. Also: the Zappa "Uncle Meat" is not all-analog. Due to tape issues, it's sourced from a 96/24 file. Sorry.
And MIA on the video is the outstanding "The Nat King Cole story" box set, remixed from the 3 track tape "live" to lacquer by Kevin Gray. Also, as of today (4/4/19) copies remain of the stereo UHQR "Axis: Bold as Love" from Analogue Productions.

"Im listening to it. Not measuring it"
Louder for the people in the back

"This will sound better. I'm quite convinced."
For some notions of better, at least. Like "it's better if you hear a lot of sibilance distortion" and "it sounds better if you watch the record spin around and around." There's plenty of sibilance distortion on that crappy-sounding copy of _Tommy_.
That said, it's great to hear this guy talk about music that he obviously knows and loves, and we're better off for it. But if you're looking for evidence that vinyl sounds better than 16-bit 44.1 kHz, or even the lossy compression that UA-cam has imposed on this video, you're not going to find it in this video.

@@jmdavison62 but I'm not looking for evidence. That's the whole point he's making in the video..there's so much jargon, statistics and apparent evidence on countless trivial things that apparently make vinyl "sound better"..
      But it's music. Not science.
I will never understand people that can't comprehend the concept of someone playing a record and simply enjoying the music it makes

It would be understatement to call you entertaining , you are giving out priceless advise on what we can purchase , collect and know what to seek for and value , something that you mentioned will be CLASSIC as is Classic music in 50 or even 100 years and further in the vast space of time. That just went right thru my body and mind , how I can collect these and one day ,hopefully my grandkids would find out they have an absolute pieces of art at their disposal. Hi Michael. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. I really enjoyed it. I've been buying music since about 1967 and for some of my favorite performers, I thought I knew their discography. But you've introduced me to a number of albums that I was not familiar with. I will now go about correcting that situation. Thanks again; much appreciated.

My first pressing of Pink Floyd's Division Bell I bought at 13 in 1994 has been played at least 50 times. It still sounds pristine. No crackles, surface noise, skips or anything. I wanted to be different and I was tired of loaning out tapes or CD's and them coming back ruined. So I switched to vinyl for a lot of albums or bought LP's of albums I really liked. Lots of 90's first pressings. My father taught me how to care for vinyl, how to store it, how to clean it and how to love it. This man (Analog Planet) knows what he's talking about. Great video!

That must be an incredible collection. Everyone wants those original 90s pressings now, but few wanted them then. I don't have to tell you, haha. Was it hard to find vinyl retailers back then?

I remember how I treated my records as a teenager and I cringe ! All those great and now very rare records by forgotten bands at a time when independent labels were springing up everywhere but pressing only a few thousand or even hundreds of copies , for me to throw them around carelessly, drop the stylus on with a thunk , find people putting coffee cups on them ( not me , I was never that bad ) . I’m sure many of us have done the same and only now as we’ve realized the true value of them as representing a time and place as well as great music , do we wish we had been more careful . Perhaps not having the higher quality equipment as a teenager we accepted the bad sound quality as a normal thing and that one more scratch wouldn’t matter too much ( until it jumped every five seconds) . I now treat my albums with far more respect and care like a much loved but formerly under appreciated girlfriend ! I , perhaps like you , have a lot of CDs but tend to use them as a casual music session , keeping the rarer , better quality vinyl albums for the days I want to really listen to the music . Perhaps because one is forced to get up at the end of the record , we listen far more and pay more attention to what’s being played , unlike the “ swipe left “ music of streaming and play and forget CDs we can’t be so inattentive, vinyl music demands we pay attention or suffer the consequences in thst terrible “ Kerr tick ,Kerr tick “ or worse , the “ sceeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrr” sound of a stylus being beaten up !

I LOVED watching this video! I am certainly going to purchase some of these albums. I appreciate this man, with all of his immense experience, sharing this with us. What a journey! I heard that Duke Ellington record (the first album he showed) at a "vinyl night" at the local hi-fi shop. One Friday a month people could take 5 records, have them cleaned, and listen to a few tracks on their big system with beautiful Wilson speakers. They put the Ellington record on but didn't change the speed to 45. Believe it or not, it still sounded amazing! It was like some avant-garde piece! Once they corrected the speed, I was blown away. I really appreciate Michael Fremer. I think he makes so much sense in his approach to appreciating music and the equipment it is played on (though I am still a little skeptical about power cords). I really value what he has to say.

You are bang on about the wearing out Michael. I listen and play old soul and reggae - mainly 45s. Most of these have been bought and sold many times and been used at various gigs / parties etc.
Still going strong and I would never swap vinyl for other formats ever. I do try whenever possible to purchase original pressings as I've found these do sound better and louder in most cases than represses/bootlegs etc. ( and Obviously worth more )
When it comes to some of them ( especially the soul tracks ) the originals are silly money, especially if some bright spark considers it to be of the Northern variety when there's always another zero wacked on the price for good measure!
Great channel. Checking in from the UK 👍

Thank you Michael, sincerely. I just finished my first listening of Duke's Masterpieces and it is scary good. It isn't often that I experience the "disappearing stereo" with my humble Pro-Ject Essential, but it happened with this one. I have to agree, even after one listening, it is one of the greatest recordings ever made. The only thing more amazing than the fact that it was recorded 70 years ago and sounds perfect is the stunning musicianship, numerous tender moments and virtuosity from tenor sax, clarinet, and Duke himself on piano (and all the instruments - - bass, bone, trumpet, etc.).

Oh, and I learned something! I have an OP of Joni Mitchell's Blue that I got super cheap in a bulk buy. Although it appeared to be in excellent condition, I was shocked and disappointed to find that the audio on the first track was only coming through one channel. The record looked ok, so I figured it might be some kind of groove damage, so I shelved it. I guess it's a collectors item now?

I agree with what you are saying. However, not all of us were blessed with the wealth to have a $1000 turntable at age 16 when i purchased "Tommy". i struggled just to have the cash to buy albums, skipping what was popular so i could have what others didn't. (No Beatles for me) i did have the changer, a GE no less. i quickly learned not to stack. Surprisingly. most LPs withstood the abuse quite nicely, which helps support your statement that vinyl lasts more than two plays. Most all are still in rotation today.

Have an original pressing of Jimi Hendrix's 1968 "Electric Ladyland" double album.
It is in immaculate condition. Unlike many of my contemporaries, I NEVER took
my vinyl to parties, because I knew they would be destroyed!
I still bought vinyl when the CD revolution began and was happy with both formats.
Have to laugh when many of my friends got rid of their vinyl collection, and are now
sorry for their error of judgment. The same friends who also laughed at me because
    "nobody listens to vinyl anymore!"
