  • Nexen N5000 Plus and RU5 tire review after 1 year and 32,000+ miles. Full acceleration on dry pavement with a 5.0ltr Mustang and driving in snowy and icy conditons. I forgot to mention in the video, the reason it's better to have 103 or 106 load rating tires is they are less affected by punctures and damage by potholes while resisting cuts and tears. It does give a stiffer ride, and can have a little negative response to uneven surface with lighter weights, but if you push your car to the limits, you're less likely to have a tire failure with a tire designed to hold up to a heavier vehicle under the same conditions.

      I'm not sponsored by, nor do I have any affiliation, but I have to give credit where credit is due. This is the second set we've had and tested in all conditions including snow, and they just work. They really grip well. And with such a wide tire, normally snow is a bad thing, but not for these tires. And temps usually effect tires, but these seem to not be effected. I just love them and won't buy anything else.

      I hope you found a good set of tires. We have another 10,000 miles on the tires and I haven't found anything better. Of course slicks or drag radials are best on dry, but in all reality, we haven't had the need for drag radials, and we've dragged on no prep, prepped, concrete and pavement and never had anything less than full trust that when we mail the throttle, they won't slip at all. And if we need to slam on the brakes in any weather, we can trust we can stop. The best combination for the price, Nexens RU5's with EBC brake pads and rotors. We use slotted and the Yellow pads, but we needed the drilled and slotted for the yellow stuff.

      At the time, that was the NE Heights in Albuquerque. Now I'm down south. As for the tires, not a single bit of issues. I cannot say enough about them. We've been in snow, ice, rain, dirty, cold and extreme heat of AZ racing at 117f out. We've done a 120mph burnout and the tires never even feathered. They still look exactly the same, another 10,000 miles from the video and the burnout later. We've wore out a set of EBC racing brakes before the tires. And we can still hit a full send on a dirty road and not even think twice if they will slip. 555 R2's don't come close to the all around performance. And the 555 R2's don't have the load rating. 106y for the Rears and 103y for the front. Nitto's are usually 98w to 101y max in our size. The extra load of the 106 and 103 means longer life and more resistance to pot holes and punctures. But I love how we got stuck during Christmas 2 years ago when we got hammered with snow and we were traveling, 16f out, 75mph winds north of T or C and we out performed 60% of the vehicles on the road. And we were in deep enough snow the chin spoiler was plowing the snow. I was able to actually drive decent speeds, faster than others with zero worry about slipping or not being able to stop. Now, Ford Advance Trac played a big roll, but it wouldn't have been possible without good tires. And if you know Eubank and Juan Tabo's bridges getting stuck at the light, you know how hard it is to get rolling, and we had a car stop right up against the back so I had no room to roll of needed and I took off as if it was dry. But it was packed snow, and deep. We even took it up to the Crest in that mess. The tune loved the cold temps. I have photos to prove it. You can check out most of it at our Facebook page, Southern New Mexico Mustang Club.

    NEXEN 215/55R 17 7000 miles. Buzz and Vibrate and ride rough. Had them re-balanced and washed. Worse still if you are on a grooved highway the tires will climb the sides of the groove.
    This is especially bad on a wet road, it can cause you to lose control or hydroplane or both.

      So, if you get the cheap Nexens, they are made in China and I've heard many people have issues with them. The Korean made don't have that problem, and I've now had 5 different types and sizes, keeping in mind to avoid the Chinese ones, we haven't had a single issue with any. Nothing but great experiences, and in all weather plus all types of vehicles. And the roads here are probably some of the worst roads in the country, definitely top 5 or top 4 for absolute worst roads. Everybody wrecks with any tiny bit of weather because the roads are so bouncy bad tires easily loose traction. But Nexens have put performed Squishilins, Badyears or BFGW.

    Will you recommend Kumho Ecsta PS31 or Nexen N5000 for mercedes benz C250 RWD ? Kumho does not show any warranty, prices are same, i want good life and wet / rain performance in regular driving

    • @johng6673
      @johng6673  Рік тому +1

      So, Mercedes always recommend Michelin. Mercedes are very dependent on their tires performance. So the best option is Michelin. Now, I absolutely Love Nexen over Kumho. But, I would try and go with N Priz AH8, N Fera AU7, RU5 or SU1 if possible. Now I didn't have any issues with our N5000 Plus, I just feel the others have performed in all weather a little better for acceleration traction. But the most important part is to make sure to go with the highest rating possible. There is a load rating and a speed rating. Make sure to keep the number as high as possible, 105 I believe is the highest in that size passenger, but I wouldn't go any lower than 94 with any brand. The speed rating is in letters, the higher the letter the higher the speed. Y is basically the highest street rating for the most part and no need to go any higher. W is fine and beyond anything legal for any highway speeds. The importance of these ratings, Mercedes are very dependent on the tires as part of the suspension and traction control. With this, tires rated lower will be easier to cause rim damage, puncture or flex. They will be less likely to pick up screws and nails with a stronger tire. Downfall, a harder tire rides stiffer than a soft tire. The higher speed rating isn't important for going over 189mph, but two parts. The higher the rating, the better it will perform in weather at higher speeds, but more importantly it will hold up better at higher speeds for wear and have less resistance meaning better gas mileage. Now, always pay attention to the basic standard ratings on the side. Treadwear, the higher the number the longer the life. Michelin have horrible life. Traction is usual A, B, or C. NEVER buy a "c" rated tire. Horrible in rain. a "B" rated are fine in most cases. Just know in severe flooding performance is reduced greater than with a A or AA rated tire.
      If it was my vehicle, I would go with N Fera SU1 97W depending on your rim size. That would be my first choice. The AU7 does come in higher ratings. so I might lean towards them slightly. But, if you are less for performance, and want a decent, smooth ride with a decent tire, the N5000 Plus is more of a comfort, highway tire for traveling. And they do last very well and are great on the highway. But while snow I didn't notice anything different, I did notice the SU1, or RU5 was superior to the N5000 Plus, but only when racing. They did perfectly fine racing in speeds above 115mph at Wilcox Raceway.
      As for Kumho Ecsta PS31, they are a performance tire, widely used with Fords Mustangs. Mostly with the Ecoboost though. The ratings are less and they are a Summer Tire, not a All Weather, so keep that in mind, they don't have the sipes for ice and or snow. Now, while the RU5 or SU1 don't either, I can say, and have video to prove they performed better than my OEM All Seasons. But Kumho's website reviews even state it is a summer tire and not designed for icy conditions. I also know Kumho is a softer rubber which is effected by cold temps more than Nexen. But I also can say, Michelin are actually horrible in cold temps with their super soft compound. Another option I wouldn't argue with, but didn't find them as good as the Nexens but I did really like was the BF Goodrich Comp 2 TA. My son had me try them since he liked them on his Corvette. The were nice, but I wasn't able to really test them due to a drunk driver. Oh well, hopefully I'll get another chance to try again.
      Hope this helps. I know it's long, but it's a lot of information

    Quick question. Can I upgrade from 235/45/17 to 245/45/17? Would interfere with ABS and speedometer?

    • @johng6673
      @johng6673  3 місяці тому

      I doubt it would affect the ABS if done on all 4 corners. Speed variation is what ABS looks for, but also usually a dramatic change. It does learn constant change.
      As for will they fit? I couldn't answer accurately without knowing which vehicle. But I can tell you that small of a change probably wouldn't change anything. It's slightly taller. In most cases it will effect tire rub while max turning and the tire can rub the splash guard. But no harm comes from this and usually it self clears after a few times. Yes, your speedometer will slightly be off, maybe half a mile an hour slow to maybe one full. Basically just keep it 1mph under the normal speed limit and you should be okay. Its not enough to worry about. If you went 255/45 then I would say you need to verify a little more. Also if available and needed, you can check on going wider as well, 255/35/17 should be close to the same as original or 245/40/17.

      I was able to race at over 120mph in standing water with heavy rain and never had any issues. As for winter, of course winter tires are better, but for many of us, snow is rare so having a tire that doesn't have to be specific to snow helps.

Not to mention, phenomenal for racing in all conditions. So I'm not sure what you're saying. And of course Winter tires are better for snow, but they have issues with regular driving. So the best option is what's best for your environment, but regardless Nexen usually has you covered. And no, I don't work or associate with Nexens, I'm just a fan

      So, I would go to their website and see how they have them rated and match it with what is best for your scenario. I can say, I've used the N5000 Plus on our Mustang for all occasions and they worked great for front tires. My brother-in-law just got the N5000 Platinums for his Acura MDX and he really likes them. As for hard driving, high speeds, and all weather, my personal favorite is the SU1 or RU5's. I've used both and they were great for racing, but also in snow, rain and even heavy rain racing at over 120mph and I didn't think twice about any issues. I can also say, I've only gotten a nail in the N5000's, which was actually only once and on the front. What this means is, they are very well made and use great materials so they puncture less than others. My son is using Rodian HTX and absolutely loves them. Snow, rain and everything in between. I don't think you could go wrong with any choice, just use their website to match your needs with what they recommend for the vehicle. If you find yourself wanting something specific, you can play with sizes a little as long as you keep the diameter and the width fits the vehicle. For example, a 285/40/20 is the same diameter, a 275/40/20 is close enough in most cases, you can use a tire diameter calculator to find a different size. Try tiresize.com if you would like. But only if you're trying to meet a certain criteria. Otherwise what the door sticker says is usually what's best. For a SUV that you daily, don't really drive on snow, the Rodian GTX is a great recommendation. If you drive in snow, the N5000 will be better, and of course, if you can, I personally love RU5 or SU1. I just can't say anything good enough to explain what I put them through, but also how they helped save my life from a drunk kid and I never lost control at very high speeds.

Then second, both my wife and I have disabilities which the 6R80 makes more sense. Now, trash talk all you want, but the 6R80 is actually far better than I ever expected, and manual shift works perfect for road racing, and even when we drag manuals I use manual shift to keep shifts equal except for the clutch which is a big advantage in many ways. The only thing I will say, I don't like the 3:15 rear gears. And our 2012 was a MT82, so I can compare, and know the actual difference from driveability and performance both on the street and on strip and road course tracks.

Nexens have been my favorite all around, all weather, and even racing tire that I can daily and track them. But like I said, everyone has their preference. And you have to make sure the Nexens are made in Korea and have the higher ratings, 101-106 Y.
