Great advice and great vid I using the nematodes on my front lawn as it like a bowling green but had some yellow patches on it.however many thanks for your great help great channel
I work for a local lawn care company. New builds likely have grub because you're not only creating moist conditions for them, but they've been there since before your house was built, and the builders put sod right on top of clay, which is usually why it takes many years to fully treat. There can be up to three generations of leatherjackets in your lawn.
Hi Cody, you sound like a rare person who actually knows what they are talking about, how can I message you? Our new build is 4 years down the road but they came with the turf, can't get rid and have just ripped the garden out, hopefully it will work but I am worried they will be back

Had the same problem with our back garden in a new build, been treating the garden for 2 years now. First treatment had them crawling out of the grass over the patio to escape!!
Try weed and feed, spread as directed cover area with polythene the gas released will kill all insects and grubs that live in the thatch. don't leave the polythene down more than three days.
We had massive issues with leather jackets in our new build due to infected turf, was re turfed and I treated it earlier this year and it's pretty much cleared them up, I used a watering can for treatment. Will be treating again soon.
Just got a new build, spent all of last summer, winter keeping my lawn immaculate and...boom. Half of it is gone. The little blighters. Thanks for the tips and link. I’ve Used Nematodes before but went too early. Thanks for the tips. I want my damned grass back!
The problem with new builds suffering is I think down to the turf suppliers also not having access to chemicals to kill leather jackets. I have seen many new lawns destroyed by leather jackets. I recently laid a smll 20m extension to a lawn and as I was about to lay the last turf a leather jacket popped its head out so they are coming with new turfs. Worse still is when you turf late summer/early autumn when they have laid their eggs in the turf that you have purchased to lay. Do not really see damage until early spring.
Really helpful video thanks! My lawn was totally devastated by leather jackets this winter. Every morning there were hundreds over the patio next to the lawn and I was sweeping them up! I applied nematodes as soon as the soil was warm enough in April, they soon stopped being visible in the morning. I did another nematode treatment in May! Following an over-seed and feed my lawn has now recovered thankfully! On repairing some pop-up sprinklers however I found some live ones still!!!! This time of year are they no longer feeding as they move into their next life-cycle or is it just the grass is too strong to do damage? Do you think I should be applying more nematodes or wait until these ones hatch and wait until I see the adult crane flys emerge and lay eggs? I think Ive read thats around September? I can't believe they caused so much damage and want to do everything I can to limit their impact again this winter! Any advice appreciated :)
Very good and clear instructions as always Robby, l use these every year and are very effective, not only for stopping the grass dying but it also stops badgers digging up your lawn looking for the grubs. I’m not sure if you have already, could you do another video on nematodes for chafer grubs? As you know these can be just as bad as leatherjackets, and badgers love these grubs too.
@@Premier_lawns_official Your lucky then we do over here in southern England, the method to eradicate them is the same as with leatherjackets just different nematodes. Look into it Robby they’er nasty little grubs a bit bigger than leatherjackets, which is why badgers love them.
I've got Leatherjackets and Chefur grubs in my new build garden. There's more Chefur grubs than leatherjackets though, horrible things. Been living here nearly 2 years and the grass has already gone patchy in areas, basically lifts up like a carpet. I've given the grass one lot of nematodes in late May, nothing positive seems to have happened yet but we do have an awful lot. I'm going to give the grass another coating in September. I've always noticed poor looking grass on new build properties, i've always thought it had a lot to do with poor drainage/having rubble mixed in with soil etc but i bet most of the damage is from chefur/leatherjackets.
We don't have chafer grubs in Ireland You might have been a bit late with the nematodes or not used enough. Definitely worth hitting it again next month

Hi there, just wondered if you could help? I have a new build and I treated for leather jackets last September then a month later, I laid some topsoil and some new seed. It looked amazing now we’re in end of February and they’ve attacked the grass again. What am I doing wrong and how can I rectify it?
I've just found 2 leatherjackets in my lawn whilst scarifying it. Should I be worried? There aren't really any bare patches or any other damage. Should I use a namatode just to be on the safe side?
Nematodes can be very hit and miss, your lawn can support a certain amount of leather jackets, it's just when it gets a lot it becomes a problem. If it puts your mind at ease then it wouldn't hurt to air on the safe side of caution
Brilliant video Robbie! Do you think perhaps that new builds struggle more with leatherjackets because the soil tends to be poor quality, therefore the young grass plants are stressed by trying to establish in what is essentially barely buried rubble. Stressed plants are more sensitive to leatherjacket damage?
After much research on this i have come to the conclusion and evidence that they are coming with turf. All control has been banned therefore farmers cannot treat their fields with guaranteed results. Ours came with brand new turf, laid on crap compacted clay, unfortunately by the time we figured out why everything died its been a 4 year battle which ended on Friday when the garden got ripped up. Because there is no real treatment the crane fly are breeding and nematodes don't have a big effect, especially when each crane fly lays 300 eggs each. They come back too because you have rubbish wet soggy soil they don't go off to lay somewhere else. It's a never ending cycle and until a new treatment is found it will keep on happening. One thing I do know is they need to bring something to the market ASAP because this is becoming a huge problem, it's got worse since 2016 which coincided with the pesticides ban.
Great video mate. You have confirmed my worst fears and I now know we have them in our new lawn that was only laid just over a year ago😭 I will treat it like you described thanks👍 P.s I have a cat, is the Nematodes safe for him to walk on or should I keep him in for a while after treatment??
I have bald patches by the fence. I've put some seed down and it is growing, but again, not in the area where the bald patches are. I thought it was the sun not getting to it, but it has sun for about six hours before the sun goes over the fence.
My lawn is full of them. Looking to treat this year. I was advised to wait until I see daddy long legs flying about then wait 2 weeks to treat. New build as well, reckon it is because the developers get really cheap untreated top soil.
Premier Lawns sorry yes, poor choice of words...the higher quality soil gets bunded and stored for about 5 years to help get rid of soil-borne pests. Also less stones and boulders! But developer would never opt for that. Great channel by the way, subscribed today 👍🏻
What about Acelepryn G use in the uk. I see it is only for emergency use but don't know how this applies to home use on lawns? It appears to refer mainly to golf courses and airfields etc. However watching a few foreign videos it seems to be safe for humans and pets.
Hi, I have annoyingly leatherjackets in my lawn 😰 Obviously it’s June now. Is there any point still using this product now in June? If so I’ll buy through your link asap 👌🏻
No point now. Your best bet is to try and sweat them out. You do this by really soaking the lawn in the evening. Not just a bit of water, loads Then put a black polyethylene sheet over the top and in the morning brushing all of the leather jackets off the lawn and into the brown bin or well away from the lawn Do that until there are no more
Hi Robbie, a recent fan of your videos and easily explained method. I've just moved house recently, and inherited a lawn with patches of what seems to be heather over a number of areas, both growing and dead (black), and a few hundred dandelions. It's approx 350 m2, so trying to avoid starting from scratch, and would rather try and treat it back to a decent lawn. Don't know how to add a pic, otherwise you could have seen it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a new build and have a problem with leatherjackets. I used the nematodes in April but have since seen a few coming out after heavy watering. Wonder if I should use them again. Grass always seems yellowish even after being fed.
any advice on how to get rid of ants in the lawn Robbie, here in coastal South Devon they keep leaving piles of dirt all over my lawn, when i brush it off there are bare patches.
Another great video! Our lawns are wrecked at the moment, lots of brown/dry/bare patches. I went digging like you did the other day - I found a single leatherjacket, but a LOT of ants... everywhere! So I'm actually going to try Ant nematodes. I'm convinced it's the ants that have been munching on the grass roots. What do you reckon Robbie?
Jonny Jones I’ve found that ants aren’t great fans of liquid iron and Humic acid.... those applications on my lawn have reduced the ants, although not got rid totally. If you get Ant mud mounds in the garden, wash them down with a hose first... don’t mow over them....
@@rosscraddock6241 Thanks for the info, the grass isn't really growing either, so I don't need to mow it thankfully! There's a recent post in the UK Lawn Care Group on FB about ants, and another friendly lawn care business owner recommends Ant Stop granules (available on Amazon), which dissolve in water and you apply to the most infested areas. So I'll apply that once I've scarified and aerated in September I think... as well as some Iron/Humic.
The ants aren't eating the grass, they are making a nest in your lawn, they leave the earth that they excavate in mounds at the exit which blocks out light and the grass dies. I've used ant stop granules in the past. There is no need to water the whole lawn with it, just the entry points to the nest. I also use lawn sand in the summer to green up the lawn, it contains iron sulphate which acidifies the soil which also helps with worm casts in the autumn / winter
@@ianhutch101 Thanks for the info Ian, makes sense. My plan is to kill the lawns off anyway and start fresh - the laws haven't been tackled in years. So once I've scarified and gotten rid of most of the dead grass I'll be able to see what they're doing better, target the entry points too.
I noticed you didn’t fill up the tub with water on the hose end sprayer, is this the right way to apply or should you fill it with water? I generally fill with water so wanted to make sure
Hello premiere lawns good video I think I've got this problem... Suddenly my nice lush green grass from last year died of in patches over the winter and now resembles a battlefield. Great vid mate, Although doesn’t the hopper on the feeder have to be full with water for it to work
The hopper fills up once you attach the hose to it as shown in the video 👍
Haha its you off the Facebook page. Top vid pal
Thanks 😁
My lawn is full of them. Looking to treat this year. I was advised to wait until I see daddy long legs flying about then wait 2 weeks to treat. New build as well, reckon it is because the developers get really cheap untreated top soil.
Most soil is untreated....
Hi, I have annoyingly leatherjackets in my lawn 😰
Obviously it’s June now.
Is there any point still using this product now in June?
If so I’ll buy through your link asap 👌🏻
No point now. Your best bet is to try and sweat them out. You do this by really soaking the lawn in the evening. Not just a bit of water, loads
Then put a black polyethylene sheet over the top and in the morning brushing all of the leather jackets off the lawn and into the brown bin or well away from the lawn
Do that until there are no more
@@Premier_lawns_official amazing!!! Thank you for the advice!!!
I found this chanel, very interesting and useful tips...Subscribed.!!!
Welcome aboard!
Can I use this product to prevent leatherjackets without causing any harm?
Not really, they have to be in the soil and at the right stage in the life cycle to work
Great and informative video every time.
Thanks Fraser
Great suggestion. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for leaving me a comment have a great weekend ❤
Can you over seed while applying the treatment?
Yes 👍
Hi Robbie, a recent fan of your videos and easily explained method.
I've just moved house recently, and inherited a lawn with patches of what seems to be heather over a number of areas, both growing and dead (black), and a few hundred dandelions.
It's approx 350 m2, so trying to avoid starting from scratch, and would rather try and treat it back to a decent lawn.
Don't know how to add a pic, otherwise you could have seen it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Bill I run a community on Facebook called the premier lawns community. They will be able to help you with it 🙂
I have just recently had these patches of dead grass appear in my lawn. After watching this video seems I have them. Nemesis on order. Should I wait till Sept to apply ?
Hi Mike
They won't do anything if you put them on now. You have to wait.
Very helpful, thanks!

Hi Premier lawn guy think have flys in my lawn they hatch when I’m mowing and have a strange bold patch I’m just about to start Autumn lawn program that’s ariation scarify seed top dress etc ,
Can I use this nematode product at same time as Autumn lawn service ??
Another point to make is to apply at dusk as uv light kills the todes, think i read this somewhere
👍
Class Video pal, keep up the great work 👍🏼🌱
Thanks JayRock ❤
I have a new build and have a problem with leatherjackets. I used the nematodes in April but have since seen a few coming out after heavy watering. Wonder if I should use them again. Grass always seems yellowish even after being fed.
You should treat again mid September
Hello. Do I need to remove all the dead patches or grass before applying?
For the nematodes? Nope, just water really well in
any advice on how to get rid of ants in the lawn Robbie, here in coastal South Devon they keep leaving piles of dirt all over my lawn, when i brush it off there are bare patches.
Nematodes
@@Premier_lawns_official cheers Robbie hope I’m not asking next year how to get rid of nematodes😀
Interesting👍 I didn't know there was a treatment for leatherjackets/cranefly
Great video as usual Robbie
Thanks Mack ❤
My lawn is wrecked now from these buggers. If i scarify and re-seed, in april. When should I apply the solution?
very helpful thank you
Your welcome Zoe 😁❤
Very good video Robbie
Thanks!!!
Hi Robbie
I followed the link but the packets say use Sep/Oct. I’m seeing them now on my lawn, so could I apply it now?
No, waste of time using them now. They only work at certain times of the year
Thanks Robbie 👍
Another great video! Our lawns are wrecked at the moment, lots of brown/dry/bare patches. I went digging like you did the other day - I found a single leatherjacket, but a LOT of ants... everywhere! So I'm actually going to try Ant nematodes. I'm convinced it's the ants that have been munching on the grass roots. What do you reckon Robbie?
Could well be, let me know how you get on 👍
Jonny Jones I’ve found that ants aren’t great fans of liquid iron and Humic acid.... those applications on my lawn have reduced the ants, although not got rid totally.
0:18secs "English Subtitles Available" 🤣
Awesome video, as always Robbie.
Thanks, have to add that as so many people can't understand my accent 🙈😂🙉
That made me laugh as well .
Can you use nematodes successfully after already applying a chemical treatment?
It would depend on the product. I would refer to the label
Hi Robbie, been meaning to ask where you got your posts from? I've had a look online but cant seem to find anything that resembles yours.
Farm shop - electric fence posts
Cheap as chips
@@Premier_lawns_official cheers I knew I'd seen them before just couldn't remember where.
@@ii8215 haha no worries 👍😁
I noticed you didn’t fill up the tub with water on the hose end sprayer, is this the right way to apply or should you fill it with water? I generally fill with water so wanted to make sure
The hose fills it once you turn it on?
Premier Lawns ok thank you wasn’t sure 👍
Your too good Robbie! 😂😁 Great vid my friend
Thanks
Does anyone know if leatherjackets travel far underground.....ie from next door?
Hello premiere lawns good video I think I've got this problem... Suddenly my nice lush green grass from last year died of in patches over the winter and now resembles a battlefield. Coincidentally last year I remember seeing a large number of crane fly at ground level at dusk. I guess they were laying eggs. My question ( finally ) lol 😁 is can I reseed at the same time to fix the holes. I mean the nematodes won't like inhibit the germination of the new seed or the like? Thanks in advance 👍
Nematodes only attack the leatherjackets, key is hitting them at the right time of year h
Robbie you are awesome, thanks for you videos. I love gardening and i want to start gardening, lawn care service in poland in my spare time, could you show what tools every person should have to start this business. Meybe you write book, ebook about lawn care? Meybe you can gives advice about books about garden care? Thanks you! Adam

Is it safe to use Nemasys at the same time as overseeding?
Nematodes?
If so, yes
good video...where do you buy the posts?
local farm shop
Very helpful thanks 😊 👍
Thank God for subtitles
Sometimes I can't understand myself 🤣
Informative video.
Thanks for watching ❤
Nice video robbie
Thanks Joseph ❤
You tube send me to this channel,as Liam on golfmates UK You tube channel were shown how can get rid of Leatherjacks on a green using Black PVC sheets and blocks of wood.I work as a assistant greenkeeper too.I didn't think it will work only chemical application can get rid of Leatherjacks. At the moment Leatherjacks have already hatched,so to late.We only just started hollow tineing.
No chemicals now to treat leather jackets now. Only nematodes
@@Premier_lawns_official Yes good tip.
Last week's video was filmed on a 36 hole course I worked on before leaving greenkeeping

Great advice thanks for that fella

Hi Robbie, just subscribed, great videos, find them very useful.
Can you test for leather jackets anytime or do you need to wait till Sep/Oct ?
If you had them last year, more than likely they will be there the following couple of years. They still might not be big enough to see, but if parts of the lawn is dying off for no reason and or birds are pecking at the lawn you have them
Great video
Your 'cranefly' photo was actually a harvestman! Not an insect and despite 8 legs not a spider either!
Everyday is a school day 👍
Very informative :)
Thanks ❤
Hi Rob, I had this issue at a previous house,. I was told that the leatherjacket eggs often come in the turf that the big house builders buy in bulk cheaply from farms. Hence you find that many of the houses on any given development suffer from the same issue with leatherjackets.
Maybe...
Awesome thanks man
Thanks Vinny, hope you have a great weekend ❤
Thanks you too
I think often the turf that new build houses use are already infected
Infected?
@@Premier_lawns_official I mean the turf must have the leather jackets in already when its delivered
Great videos by the way. Im starting up my own lawn treatment company in Derbyshire while working part time as a greenkeeper at a local club so all your hints & tips are very helpful. 👍

Thanks for this great video. I need to do a few things to my lawn. I’ve scarified today. I would like to now treat leather jackets, treat moss and weeds in lawn and then seed the patches. Which order should I do it in please?
www.bostonseeds.com/products/grass-seeds/lawn-seeds/
A lot of birds crows etc Feeding in your lawn early morn is a good sign of leather jacket activity.
Thats one of the biggest signs
Hi! Does the lawn need to be scarifies before applying? Thanks!
For leather jackets?
I have a new build, all grubs come with the new turf 100%,just a shame we are not warned and do not know about them until spring comes and your lawn suddenly dies on you
My veg patch is full of leather jackets and I blamed them for killing part of my young beech hedge(sorry leather jackets if years didnt)
I hope you took a worming tablet after that lol. I'd have worn gloves and a mask if I was handling nematodes.
Lol 😆
Hey I want to screw with me neighbor!
I’d like to dye his lawn pink n yellow !
Any ideas on what paint to use !
