Forgive me if I'm a bit slow but what's the relationship between the pigeons going for your crops and the nematodes? Thank you so much for your information on video.😊
Hi Mate Would covering your lawn with black sheeting from say, Nov to March kill the grass, all weeds and leatherjackets. ready to start from scratch next year
Hi Sue, this was one of those times I got completely muddled up and meant Crane flies. I had a complete mental block as to their name and for some reason I decided it was Mayflies. More coffee needed I think ☕☕😁
Hi, yes the netted beds were fine. There was a few plots around mine that had some terrible problems with Leatherjackets and we've all been trying to get on top of them together. Hoping this season won't be as bad.
I'd leave it around a couple of weeks. The best time to apply nematodes for Leatherjackets is in Autumn when the temps are still around 10c as this is when the eggs have just hatched and the lavae at their most vulnerable. That's not to say you can't put them down in Spring but it might take an extra application or two throughout the year for them to be more effective when the lavae are bigger and stronger.
@@marksallotmentplot thank you for responding. I would leave it until autumn but they ate all of the grass that I put down last year so it’s just mud. I need to put grass down again for my little boy to be able to play on but hopefully if I do it a few times it will help. Or I have to dig & relay grass seed every year lol. Thanx again
Ahh I thought this was about your leather jacket 😂😂, but here we have very limited nematodes we can buy. My biggest nemesis are the fungus gnats and not a lot works 🥲. Have you started any lettuce in your spanking new poly tunnel for winter. Thank you for sharing hope the family are doing well ✌️🇨🇦🐝 safe
Hi Ali, not much in the polytunnel just now as I'm going to be building permanent beds in there over the next few weeks. Have picked up some decking boards whish should do the job, just a case of getting them cut to size... oh and shovelling a few tonnes of compost 😁
Came here because the crane flies are super active in my garden at the moment and I'm trying to be organic, will definately get some nematodes, thanks for the helpful video, you've simplified it nicely 👍 But I'm also driven nuts with fungus gnats, does any one have advice for dealing with them, I'd be most grateful. God Bless 🙏🏻💖
Ahhh that's the one Lin. Before I filmed the vid I was raking my brain as to what they were called again and somehow came to the conclusion of Mayfly which of course is totally different. One of those things I just couldn't remember for some reason. More coffee needed☕
Hi Lucy, yes in theory they can get into humans but with these ones and other nematodes they’ll just pass through and out the other end causing no harm 😁 Nematodes occur naturally in all soil and this is just a way of increasing their levels so they’re mo effective against the pest you’re trying to control. Nematodes are also prey specific so the ones in this video will only ever prey on LeatherJackets where as the other ones I use (Nemaslug) will only prey on slugs and snails.
@@marksallotmentplot thanks I treated the lawn 3 days ago how long toes it take to kill them. I keep putting leather jackets in the bin disgusting things

Great update mate.
👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
Mayfly larvae live in ponds and stream. Mayflies hatch out in May and only live for a day, just long enough to lay their eggs.

Really helpful thank you! Off to Amazon I go to order
Glad you found it useful Charlotte. 👍🌱👍
Is this once a year in Spring?
Hiya, out of interest, we’re your netted beds safe from leatherjacket infestation? Assuming the crane flies cannot get to the soil in autumn? Thanks 🙏

@@marksallotmentplot thank you, so it’s definitely about stopping the adult crane flies getting on the ground in autumn….
How long after can I put grass seed down please?
I'd leave it around a couple of weeks.

@@Carina0145I'm in the same boat. I had a lovely lawn that got demolished by these buggers. I'm going to overseed then use the solution in autumn.

Crane flies are daddy long legs here in UK.
