Phelps gave the spot to Crocker, Crocker swam the fastest split in history at the time (50.28). Some may dislike Phelps for various reasons, but they have to respect the move. Phelps still received a medal for being on the prelims relay but still gave up an opportunity to be in the spotlight after winning his 8th Olympic medal. I’ll always have an immense respect for that.
@yorkuni Very true, furthermore the same commentators admitted in 2008 that it'll be close between them and Australia....so the commentators are indeed unbiased and "are just stating facts" =).
@TheBradleyC4 actually i agree with the commentators that there was no way anyone could've beaten them in this race just watch how much they put into 2nd place
No. The team that won any medal, also their teammates won even if they don't been in the final. Phelps let Crocker to participate for what he did him in the 100m fly
@bluewaterland Firstly, im not from the US. i am very well educated, i have no intention of taking up yoga. i have many sharing qualities, in 2 weeks i will be cycling 1000 miles for charity Now Ill explain. In 2008 speedo brought out the lzr. The US and phelps used them. in 2009 arena and jaked made slightly better suits. many swimers switched to them but phelps stayed with the lzr. he won with the lzr again which is still classed as a super suit as it was baned along with the rest from 2010
@TheBradleyC4 the lost it in perth 1998 too don't have the 2001 fukuokoa but here's the 1998 relay watch?v=gklKO7JgXZw also you can see that they lost the one in fukuoka in a video called IanThorpe Goodbye Hero where the end of the race is shown
@yorkuni, Alain Bernard said the exact same thing that Gary Hall jr said about the Australians 4 x 100m freestyle relay about smashing the Australians like guitars, only to get defeated in the end by Ian thorpe who is not a 100m specialist in a similar event in which America 'had' dominated.............moral.............all arrogance has its downfall.......including the americans!
Walkis Pacheco Yes. Every swimmer that participates in any round of a medal winning team gets the medal. Phelps beat Crocker in the 100m Fly so would usually be in the final here, but he had already swam the heats and Crocker didn't, so Phelps gave up his spot in the final so Crocker could get a gold too.
Heat-only swimmers also get medals but they don't get to be on the podium during the medal ceremony. If you have an issue with that rule, send letter to IOC and FINA.
sorry, you clearly know nothing about swimming. you are talking about bodysuits which are made from a hydrocarbon compund. USA did wear them in beijing. and again in the 2009 world championships. michael phelps stopped using them after the world championships, but the rest of the american swimmers continued to use them
That was awesome that Michael Phelps gave up his spot for this relay for Ian Crocker that was awesome

Crocker with the 50.3 split damn
Crocker avenged the free relay!
On what planet is 1 second just barely!?
Kitajima did his job indeed!!!
Ian Crocker deserved to swim in this race - it was all the better that Michael Phelps understood this and allowed him to win an Olympic Gold Medal.
is that Lezak? gosh, he's HUGE
crocker beast mode

Phelps participated in the heat, but he didn't participate in the final, so he won this gold by his sportsmanship???

yeah well people said that about them in the 4x100 free in beijing. and they only won by 0.08 second....
My, Peirsol looked so confident and....sexy right there before the race.... Yumm!
who's got the one from bejing ???

How come Phelps won gold in this event, when he wasn't participating in the team?
Phelps participated in the heats of this event
Yeah really good sportsmanship from phelps letting Crocker get a gold too
I still don't get it. Why should he earn a medal if he didn't swim the finals? So both Phelps and Crocker got a medal?

why phelps got medal in this events? he doesn't participate in this final
Swimmers who participated in the prelims of the relay also receive whatever medals the finals team wins.
