    For anyone wondering: I checked afterward and the peak sustained wind speed was 32.33 MPH. This was in the Goose Lake stretch and the wind was heading NW, so our put-in was protected by the trees. In order to finish our float we would have had to paddle 2.8 miles straight into the wind, which was not gonna happen. Maybe someday we'll come back and actually finish the float 😂

    The amount of fish in that stretch plus a few solid miles downstream is crazy. I hope they're all healthy and well fed because it could be full of big ones in the future.

      Idk about healthy, most were eother missing an eye or had weird growths. Solid population though, like you said. Thanks for watching, man!

    Nice video, I live like a mile off the Des Plaines near where it turns into the Illinois. That seemed a little more north of me. Those winds were crazy especially in a kayak, glad you guys made it out safe. Congrats on first Illinois Northern! You caught a lot of messed up smallies, still fun video though.

    Those were some great smallies. Great catch with the net on that airborne football. Congrats on the pike. Imagine if you didn't find his paddle.

      It was shallow enough he could have waded back to the launch, haha. Thanks for watching, man!

      @@EngineeringHooksets i gotta ask, you ever get worried about the current being in the kayak? That’s been one of my main worries and i’ve done mainly bank fishing because of it

    • @EngineeringHooksets
      @EngineeringHooksets  5 місяців тому

      @@kingjulian2871 Yes, it depends on the river but it's very dangerous to fish a flooded river in a kayak due to log jams. You can check a USGS gauge before you go and make sure the river is safe.

    I recently got a fishing kayak and have been going out a ton on my local rivers. I only have one rod at the moment (medium light that I use for ned rigs, 4" wacky, small swimbaits etc). I have a medium spinning rod (rated 1/4 - 3/4oz) that I need to get a reel for so I can start brining out two rods. What would you recommend I use the medium rod for? I was thinking maybe top water as that's what I am lacking? Any suggestions on what you would do/lures to use? Thanks!

      I would recommend a baitcaster, not a spinning setup, for topwater. The reason I say this is because most topwater lures require constant wrist twitching action (think spook or popper). Baitcasting reels put significantly less stress on your wrist than a spinning reel. However, if you do not plan on buying another rod, I would just stick to whopper ploppers only for topwater, as you dont need to twitch them.
      Personally, my favorite all-around river lure is the EFH Wyrm, and I throw it on a medium spinning rod. I know its my own brand, so take that with a grain of salt. But a weightless Texas-rigged EFH Wyrm will ride about 1" under the surface of the water (you will get topwater blowups), has an amazing side to side action when twitched, and can be straight reeled with awesome tail action. Its also extremely weedless, and the perfect size for smallmouth (3" body 3" tail). I have a few videos coming out where I absolutely crushed river smallmouth on it. Available for $6/pack on my website engineeringhooksets.com, I make them myself.
      Now aside from the self promotion; a great general rule of thumb for lure choice that I have had good luck with is: if the water is dirty, use rattling hard plastic baits. If the water is clean, use soft plastic lures.
      Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
