Holy guacamole!! I'm a retired 72 yo ..I absolutely love and feel so blessed to have rescued my girl Emily 65lb pit bull...I can't even begin to imagine how expensive all those additives are... I can barely feed us both as trying to pay my bills..this breaks my heart... I do cook regular food with vegtables.. but best I can do,she has lots of allergies especially to rice!..😮 She's been greatest gift to me... trying my best to feed her healthy good food...no more shots or that garbage flea med..she would get really bad diaharrea from them...

I have a rescue dog myself gsd male since 9 months old was not well looked after & abused thankfully he was rescued he's now 6 years old and fed only on human grade food and raw bones weighs healthy 48kg never had any health issues better teeth than mine🤣❤️🇬🇧.

Hi it can be very expensive to do everything "perfect" for our dogs and everyone's idea of "perfect" is very different. They say if you try to add some good whole foods to any diet you feed your dog then you are improving their diet greatly. You're doing a great job giving your dog some vegetables that's a lot more than people who believe that dogs should eat kibble and nothing else. Be proud of the changes you've made👏 ❤.
There is ways of doing a good affordable diet.
I do a homemade diet for my dog it's a pretty long list of foods. I wanted a complete balanced diet without the need of a supplement. Instead of a recipe it's a long list of foods that can be put together in various ways according to rules and a checklist. When I first started researching I realized there was so much conflicting information and dangerous information and recipes. So I needed to understand nutrition myself so I could identify what was good or bad and that was definitely a lot of work i really got lost in all that stuff for a while its scary knowing some things like i learned a lot about kibble. Then from there I studied some breed specific needs and came up with a long list of foods and I stick to some rules like the ratio of protein carbs and fruits/veggies.
Although I don't need a supplement I do add in a supplement. I do a calcium supplement with breakfast that I make from the eggs we get on our farm you want to use organic farm type egg shells for that I'm not sure why but I read that the cheap store bought bleached egg shells are no good. Then I give an actual store bought dog supplement with lunch it's technically unnecessary but it's carna4 sprouts supplement its reasonably priced and good to have. Then with dinner I give fish oil.
My home made diet isn't cheap but it's also not as expensive as the really good dog foods some of the good dog food is really expensive.
My wife does a raw diet for her dog I do gently cooked. But you can do a homemade raw or cooked diet on a budget you'd be surprised. Plus if your low income and have an EBT card you can get some ingredients that way I know people who feed their dog and themselves that way although it takes some cash too I think.
A pitbull would do good on raw and a chicken based diet would be cheapest like bone in chicken they eat the bone and all but it must be raw no cooked bones. We filled our freezer with turkeys that were on sale for 31 cents per pound after Thanksgiving that goes a long ways.
It's a little stressful or confusing at first to figure out what you can afford and also the proper diet but it's very rewarding making food and seeing the positive health changes.

@@Aleman365 I'll have to check this out that's interesting. What I've done over the years is I have used available medications but more often if there is fleas I'll use a dawn dish soap bath I've found that works better than flea chemical soaps at least for me and it doesn't make me as nervous. But also I've heard and I believe it works that if you take your dog swimming in salt water then don't rinse them off for the whole day or until the next day that this kills or keeps fleas away. Typically I like to rinse right away but I've tested it and I think it actually works. But you have to live by the beach or somewhere with salt water. Typically I'll just do a dawn bath if I see fleas or I will use these pills/treats from the vet but I haven't used those in years. I'm for a mix of medical science and natural stuff but we have to be careful what we give because it's not always safe like you'd expect with human medicine and even some human medicine is dangerous and your essentially introducing pesticides to kill the fleas and ticks I think.
I wish everyone had the means to treat their pets right. Rachel, could you do a video on the top things that will benefit dog health if we cant afford to feed fully raw, in a ranking. Most everyone cant buy all of these products, esp on top of vet bills. Why cook at all? Is there a reason?
I wish I had the finances to be able to provide all of that for my crew. I am completely on board with all of it. I ended up with 7 dogs and 3 cats from various situations. I add some fresh Vegetables mushrooms,meats and raw goats milk when I can.

I do slightly cook the food though as I'm not ready to go raw yet. You are right, I make my dog’s food now and it is very expensive because I have two. But I started just adding to the kibble. I added bone broth and steamed veggies and some chicken or beef or egg, just some on the top. One pound of ground beef can last a week. They get some of what I eat and I make it appropriate for them.

I have one small terrier and cook real food for her. I buy hamburger, ground pork, liver slices and sometimes venison or bison or rabbit. She gets 1/2 cup in am and pm. (She’s allergic to chicken and fowl). I add 1 tbsp cooked veggies that have been mushed: carrots, squash, sweet potato, zucchini, kale, whatever, maybe shiitake. She doesn’t get all of those every day, just whatever is in the fridge, usually 1 meat and 1 veg. To that in the am I add ground flax seed, powdered mushroom, diam earth and a drizzle of good extra virgin olive oil. Is that enough variety for health?
I home cook all my dogs food (I have 3) and when I feed them and the cat I always say "Eat and be healthy, momma loves you" so they know they are loved and cared for. I do worry about them getting complete and balanced, so I always give them a complete vitamin, plus a joint supplement. I was very interested in how you feed your pups, and wanted to check out your "adds", or supplements so that I make sure my pups are getting the ultimate food for health and longevity.
After seeing this video, I am glad that I only had 2 dogs, and will continue on to make my own once every two weeks ☺️

Hi Rachel, dog breeders tend to start puppies off on kibble. At what age do you recommend adding raw and other food toppers to kibble?
When I brought my 10 week old puppies home I immediately switched them to raw. No problems and they love it. I do transition them a little more slowly between proteins.

I don’t know if you will see this comment/question but I wanted to ask if you have any recommendations for feeding a low fat, low protein diet or if you could make a video on this topic. My pitbull suffers from acid reflux and digestion issues and needs to be on a low fat and low protein diet and I am really struggling with this 😫. Also, my dog refuses to eat any kind of raw food and the only raw food he will eat (and is not thrilled about) is from Primal. He also will not eat fruits or vegetables. I got a 13 week old French bulldog this week. Working on crate training. He is wonderful when he sees people in his locked crate but as soon as he is alone in his crate he starts barking. Should we just let him cry it out or is there tips to help? It’s hard to reward him when he stops because it’s as soon as he sees us that he stops.

Heyy! I really need a help with this issue Im facing with my 6 months old Golden Retriever. So initially we trained him to poop on our rooftop cuz he was young and we couldn't take him out yet but now its been 2 months we've been taking him out for walks but he just doesn't poop outside! Ive tried increasing walk time, took him out at exact times he poops but nothing seems to work! He ruses to the rooftop as soon as we return home, basically holding it in all while walking. What should I do? Im okay with cleaning after him but it smells bad all the time and I cant find a solution

I love that Sundays is air dried AND SOFTER THAN A LOT OF OTHERS! It's more like jerky. The other air dried or dehydrated food pieces were too HARD, my dog wouldn't even try.

What do you do when your dog no longer is interested in finishing his food no matter what I place as a topper or enhancer and I wind up throwing good high priced food in the garbage. He has had some digestive issues. The last being when he turned 1 yr in November. He was treated for anxiety colitis. Now I add CBD drops for anxiety to his food and wonder if the smell or taste of that turns him off from eating but it does calm him.
What do you think? I feed him Dr Marty’s and Nutritional Complete. Adding toppers such as boiled chicken and rice. Doesn't care for veggies. If I put minnows as a topper he puts them on the side. Tried pumpkin but does not interest him!🤔

Rachel....I need your help a little bit....I have a 10 month old Bernedoodle he is 60lbs. I rescued him when he was 4 mos old he was born in a puppy mill and he was skin and bones weighing only 16lbs . I always have hated kibble but didn't feel confident enough to get raw feeding right and make matters worse. So I have been watching you and Dr. Judy...some others but I don't trust them ha ha. I think I am finally getting it 80% muscle meat, 10% organ meat, 10% bone I am putting things together and still providing kibble (Diamond Natural Puppy) just in case he's hungry because I know I don't have the measurements and everything down pat yet. I can't sow you the picture of his meal this morning do here's a quick rundown..... hamburger, chicken wings ground up with the skin and bones, salmon, chicken liver and gizzards, pumpkin, (carrots, sweet potato, green beans ,kale -chopped up lightly cooked about 1/2 C) 1/2 egg -poached - a strawberry, keifer plus I give him a doggy vitamin pill. He had such a rough start.... I am feeding him a pound right now so this is half and I will feed the other half this evening...I will change around the veggies....looking at this model what would you add, change or fine tune???? I feel so good that I feel like I am on the right track but I want to be sure I get it balanced and once I get it down so I can understand how to switch it around with proteins I will feel better. Thank You! for all your videos and help...it's a little confusing especially when you look at all the different ways people are saying to do it. I am familiar with the dog list so I know what to stay away from. How do I calculate the bone? I get a some chicken wings put them in my processor and mixed it all up together and then just measure it out from there. Thank You!!
What do you think about multivitamin by dog is human?
I cook for my 2 mini schnauzers. Their food consists of ground turkey, sweet potatoes, carrots, green beans, white rice, and pumpkin puree (all organic). I don't give any supplements but know that I should. One has had a horrible allergic reaction to fish oil. What is another alternative to fish oil and what other supplements do they need? Because of their food allergies I'm always worried about experimenting with their food.
Hi! The fish oil that you gave what fish were in it? What was the reaction if I may ask? I ask because our boy had a reaction of bumps on his head in different areas when we gave fish oil daily. They went away when we stopped giving it and now we are giving it every other w gd results no issues, will try daily again shortly. We're hoping we gave it to him to fastinitially. Will see..

I can hear one of your dog is whining while waiting for the food to be prepared. Is there a way to relief the anxiety? My dog does the whining plus shivering plus running around in circles.
Love all the information you give on pet's health and your wonderful guests like Dr. Morgan and Dr. Jones. It has been a big help in understanding the vaccines (which I've never been a big fan of), flea products, etc.
Would love to put my 4 dogs on a better feeding plan but I just did a meal plan with Viva for my 3 Aussie girls and my 35# rescue male and my monthly feed cost would be $1,264.00! And I didn't even add Dr. Harvey's products which when I saw the price I about fell out of my chair.
I'm sure these are all great products but I don't know how people can afford to feed their dogs on this kind of meal plan. I sure can't.

Coconuts oil is almost entirely saturated fat. It is also devoid of omega 3 acids. This the worst oil you could feed a dog or person. Switch to olive or canola oil.
BTW, did you know that early ASCVD research was performed on dogs? The researchers did not give dogs ASCVD by feeding them red meat as that was too expensive. They use plentiful and cheap cocoanut oil. It's great at causing ASCVD. FYI.

Can you check out and do a review of Essence kibble? It is high in protein and does not have those ingredients that some dogs are allergic to. We are currently using the Ranch and Meadow so I am including the ingredients here, but they have other formulas as well.

Woaaah that's steep! Curious, what dogs do you have and how much do they eat daily? My dog eats about 15kg a month (500g a day) and works out at £105 a month think it's around 126 in dollars
@@gentleoutdoors great Dane and pitbull/German Shepard mix. Both are under 1yr old. At 8momths the great Dane eats 540gs 2x daily plus half a meat patty a day. He's still showing ribs. They exercise a lot outside in our backyard. I pay currently 150 every two weeks. Sometimes sooner. Depending on when bags run out.
@@gentleoutdoors I'll take 500 a month over 1400.... Good food is expensive regardless of where it's from. As a chef I've tried cooking for my dogs and it's just far too much work and takes up heaps of kitchen space. It's not really a saving of time or energy.

This video is so insulting. Of course, EVERYONE would love to give their fur babies all of these wonderful products, but most people don't have thousands of dollars a month to allocate towards pet food. If you really want to save "all the damn dogs" you should probably focus on suggesting financially feasible ways to feed healthy, instead of showing off a bunch of awesome products that most of us can't afford.

Are you feeding him prior to the walk or after? My will not poop unless it is first thing out the crate or after eating.
