I get the humour in the comments and all but if someone is actually wondering what the video is showing it’s basically engine braking. If you engage the clutch as soon as you brakes your engine and transmission are not connected and the only thing slowing you down are the pad on rotor / friction brakes. Whereas if you slow down a lot without using the clutch and only push it in right before you stop or stall you will be able to use the engine and transmission’s resistance to help slow you down. It’s both safer, fuel efficient and cheaper since your brakes last wayyy longer. I usually try to play the game where you don’t use your brakes but only downshift to slow down lol (I drive an auto with paddles)
When you press the brakes too hard ABS will activate which has a much longer braking distance than before ABS turns on. Even then some cars don't have far braking pedal distance.
Slamming on the breaks is incredibly dangerous, not only will it potentially break your neck, it damages the breaks and the car and also risks you losing all traction and going everywhere. Hitting the clutch harder is better than hitting the breaks harder if you feel the need to press hard. And as the comment above said, most new cars won’t even let you slam the breaks
@@Arutemysuabs makes is just there so the brakes don’t lock up. Braking is better before abs kicks in but if wheels lock up that’s the entire purpose of abs
@@splitdragon3004thats why theres abs unless your car is really old. abs keeps the wheels going so you dont lose traction and drift all over the place. and youre not always going to break your neck without abs, especially going at faster speeds, the force is more subtle
I'm for the US and agree seldom do people even contemplate purchasing a manual transmission unless it's a performance car (even then most will choose an automatic transmission if it's as fast as or faster than a manual trans model). Another deciding factor is resale. Many dealer don't even want a manual on their lot because they are hard to sell. I'm the opposite, I much more prefer a manual in everything I drive/own (although many don't have a manual available). I've been driving manual transmissions for 40+ years (sometimes racing applications). I love the control of an engine's powerband they offer. I much more enjoy driving when the vehicle has a manual trans.
The anti millennial theft device as my dad says. I am a millennial, thankfully though I can drive stick as my first car was stickshift. I really enjoy stickshift actually, it's a shame the car i got now is automatic. Buut the car I got now is a way better car and a friend of mine bought my old car. (Which was good he did, as right after he bought it. Someone slammed into his van while it was parked out front for the night. ) They were prolly driving stick 😅 they hit my buddys van, both cars were totaled. They got out and ran. Turns out the car they were in was stolen. Def sucked for my buddy, but thankfully he had my old car as he's got a wife and kids and places to be. I don't have a wife and kids
I think he's indicating to shift into a lower gear to aid your braking. It can help, but your tires only have so much traction. As others have said, "it's better not to follow too close so you have space to brake."
Na hes just stupid and thinks that engine braking gives you any advantage in an emergency braking situation. It doesnt. the brakes are able to fully lock up the wheels, thats why you have ABS on basically any vehicle past the year 2000.
The best thing you can do if your life depends on it is to not push the clutch in at all, leave the car in gear, slam breaks, and turn car off, so don't push the clutch at all if lives depend on it
@@SoupIsSouppy this but also if there is alittle more time for you to react and break do downshifts they will help your car to stop faster if you can downshift fast enough but you got to make sure you hit the breaks as hard as you can (if you have a car with ABS)

Two things: 1: This isn't actually ideal for an emergency stop. If you need to stop quickly in a modern car, even with a manual transmission, just stomp the brake. ABS will prevent lock-up and you'll slow down quicker. Riding the clutch is unnecessary and causes additional wear. Sure, you'll stall the engine. But your priority is on not crashing, not keeping the engine running. 2: This could be avoided entirely by not tailgating the person in front. You aren't racing down the Hangar Straight at Silverstone, you're trying to make your way down Interstate 70.
@@Coolgamer400 Agreed, It would actually prevent wear on the gears. Still, in an emergency just slam the brakes if you aren't experienced enough to do both.
In adtion to 1: Not pressing in the clutch adds a bit of additional resistance from the engine to help you stop a bit quicker. If your brakes are good enough this will only give you a tiny bit of an advantage but its helpful and easier so why not just hit the brake.
Pro pro pro tip: Open the Wii menu by pressing the *HOME* button on your Wii remote. When you are ready to exit the menu, press the *HOME* button again 😱
That's why yur supposed to be a safe distance behind the person in front of you. If you brake hard, and the other person does not brake hard nuf and crashes into you, it's their fault. Unless you brake checking, but still, you should be far enough to be prepared for a brake check too.
@@christianartemnostratis8165 I don't know what kind of new age manual you drive but every single manual still brakes even when the engine is off, for cars that are from around 2008 and upwards the brakes fluid is pressurised by a pump powered by the engine which makes the brake less effective when the engine is off, but it still works
For anyone confused, the clutch in manual cars allows you to switch gears by ceasing power transfer to the transmission. This prevents grinding gears as well as the need to turn the car off when changing gears. When the clutch has not been pressed there is a slightly higher resistance to motion which the car engine can over come. However, this can work in your favor when slowing down as it add just a bit extra help on top of you applying breaks. If you were to press in the clutch before breaks, it would remove that little extra resistance causing the need for your breaks to work harder to stop the car. If you're learning how to do this, just remember when you're going significantly slower to go ahead and get the clutch in because otherwise the engine will shut down admit several surges of energy causing jumps in forward motion.
Also doesn’t matter if you press clutch or brake before. Yes brake is better and recommended but still it can be fine. Especially when I see I’m going to get to a stop in like 50 meters I just clutch and let the car roll free until I stop. Saves gas too
Well I’ll change my previous comment. Clutch before brake is okay if you’re going to stop soon. But if not like in the highway then brake only no need to clutch
In an emergency brake the amount of braking power will be limited by the traction available, the clutch will make no difference at all. The brakes can overcome the engine easily and will break traction long before the engine brakes or engine rotational resistance comes into play....unless your brakes are completely screwed in which case don't drive the car. Ie. you shouldnt hit the clutch at all. Put both feet on the brake if you can especially in abs cars.
@semtheprogamingmaster8610 no, if you want to suddenly break you dont hit the clutch you'll lose the engine break. You can go low gear fast but dont ever step hard on clutch like the woman on the first video. Best thing is to just slam the break down to the last second to avoid collision
Yeah why are we driving so fast so close to other cars. If there is enough traffic you are surrounded don’t speed faster than you can break to sudden stops. Personally if I’m so close to you I can barely see ahead of your car I’m too close.
and also be patient, walmart won't go anywhere, nobody gonna take your grocery and your chicken lickin finger away, so chill out. the worst thing that could happen is that you spent 2-5 more minute on the road, which is negligible, compared to the time you spent dealing with car crash

Tip of advice on brakes. Maintain distance and never brake in a last second, always slow down before braking. It will prevent the brake to be worn fast.
Seating position is important. If you have the right seating position, the brakes should automatically be pressed correctly. You just need to make sure you are comfortably close to the pedals and you can floor those when required.
Fact: this video can be for beginners who want to drive cars, and this video is perfect for beginners starting to drive a car, plus, it is very helpful for them to not crash into any car or it could lead to injuries! So this video is very helpful for beginners.
Try this on a loaded truck or heavy loaded vehicle, youll change your mind long before you realize your car/truck wont stop in time. You really shouldnt underestimate engine breaking.
If you think that crash is due to high speed you are mistaken its due to not paying enough attention when you come up on a sudden row of cars that stopped extremely quickly and you didnt react in time to brake
Tip: in an emergency situation forget about the clutch all together, just break. Your engine will stall in the end when you don't use the clutch at all, but your only objective in that moment is not causing an accident. So don't let the clutch distract you. I love it how the pedals are labeled in the clip btw. Like, really? 😂
also even if you don't crash after leaving the car in gear during the stall, you should as also start thinking about buying another car because that trans and motor are gone.
@@syndoxxx1665 Don't be ridiculous. What are your engine and gearbox made of, cardboard? Sure, I wouldn't recommend making a daily practice of it, but we're talking about an emergency situation here. That's a bad time to start thinking about what pedal to use when. Just hit the brakes. And if your car dies from an occasional engine stall, then it deserves to die. You'd be better off with a normal car anyway.
This is why it's very important to drive slow in the beginning when you are learning. It will give you enough practice to automatically put your leg at right place at right time in these situations.
How da hell do you get your license where you live then? 😂😂 just drive the damn limit driving too slow can be just as dangerous as driving waaay too fast
@yamisukehiro2643 if everyone around is driving faster than only 1 has to not look out for 2s and he crashes into you or swerve around and cause an even bigger crash. Thats why its such an issue when elederly are going onto the highway and going even way slower than the hgv/lorry's since they dont stop that fast they have to swerve around and just cause dangerous situations Other drivers indeed have to watch out. But they are human so that will not be 100%. So then matching the speed will reduce the chance of accidents by allot same as driving with confidence instead of hessitating and randomly braking because of it.
@@DiyNukedriving slower is Not Dangerous. Often Its needed. Like in the Dark, when the street is wet, especially when wet With leaves, freezing or Traffic Jam. Being slower than the Limit ist only Dangerous when Others are Not paying Attention.
One thing I was always taught when driving manual is "the brake is always the brake" meaning that, if you find yourself in a similar situation, hit the brakes and figure the engine out later.
Been driving manual for almost 30 years on different cars, and for most people who cannot react and change gears in a split second, your best bet is to brake first but slam on both. This allows both your hands to remain on the wheel, while having both feet properly planted. Having only one hand on the wheel or one foot/leg planted in the event of a collision will cause more damage to yourself. Prioritizing the car's condition over personal safety is like saying you'd rather die or hit someone than mess up your dad's car. 😂
"like saying you'd rather die or hit someone than mess up your dad's car." And the irony is, doing either of those things will *_definitely_* mess up your dad's car.
I'm driving a manual and this video makes absolutely no sense for me. In emergency braking just stomp the brake and that's it. who the fuck cares if you stall?
@@scylk You shouldn't care about stalling, but if the engine's still trying to turn the wheels while the brakes are trying to stop them, it'll extend your stopping distance. Not by _much_ in most cars, but "Barely stopped in time" and "Almost stopped in time" can be worlds apart. So, you know, brakes first, and then the clutch is a good idea too.
@@LamentlogicSeriously, OP's mindset shows just how privileged they are to where replacing a car is portrayed so insignificantly. For a lot of people, their car is literally the only thing keeping a roof above their heads and losing it for even a short period of time will put them in an unrecoverable financial position.
Important rule: avoid distractions and keep your eyes on the road and give your self timed to slow down due to stationary traffic. That way you won’t have to do an emergency stop.

foot on the brake first to start slowing down immediately, then quickly gear down so that you get the effects of "engine braking" to help slow the car down further. While it can damage your engine, its definitely worth it to avoid a crash.
I don't think that abs brakes as fast as partially pushing down the brake pedal. and yes you're probably right, shifting/using clutch doesn't matter when you're going that fast towards a car
I bought a Ford Ranger that was manual transmission and never drove a stick before but learned after a week. You learn fast if you have people beeping behind you stalled out at a light 😂

First one: Let's hit the clutch harder than the brakes.

Oh yes, the clutch! In the United States it doubles as an anti-theft device. 😆

Two things:
1: This isn't actually ideal for an emergency stop. If you need to stop quickly in a modern car, even with a manual transmission, just stomp the brake. ABS will prevent lock-up and you'll slow down quicker. Riding the clutch is unnecessary and causes additional wear. Sure, you'll stall the engine.
Amen
Too long none reading that
Also doesn’t matter if you press clutch or brake before.
