Sony's equivalent of the Canon cripplehammer is the firmware cold shoulder. It's how they force people to keep upgrading their cameras. I have to say though, that Sony has pretty good tech and it's not necessary to have all the recent features to get good footage.
I agree to some extent. 24fps is overrated in my opinion, but it SHOULD be on cinema cameras so, now they all have it. Concerning the Alpha range, what stings is being deprived of features that we know the camera is capable of, like animal eye focus for instance. I'm happy with the direction their FX line is going, but they've really got to get the Alpha line under control. I think maybe they're trying to and the a7S3/fx3 fiasco was just mismanaged transitioning.
@@snaprifice Sony will always make illogical executive decisions. Always have, always will. Still, I've stuck with Sony for many years because they've always got some edge over the competition. They've had the best autofocus for years, for example.
The main reason for choosing Sony would be their sensors and lenses. They'll give you really high image quality. Firmware features is another thing. Realistically, if you're a skilled photographer or videographer, you won't be using a lot of features anyway.
@@audioupgrades I agree and that's mostly what is enticing me over to their ecosystem. I don't really care too much for their features like the new AI subject tracking or clear image zooming. I just want great image quality, decent lowlight performance, reliable functionality, and great autofocusing for some vlogging content.
This is TRULY infuriating; I can't even imagine what A7S owners are going through, especially after they had to wait several years JUST to get the SIII, then it's not properly supported!... I am an A1 owner; like I'm sure many owners I put all it could into buying that crazy-expensive-but-amazing camera, with the 'assurance' that Sony would properly 'support' a new category flagship camera THEY came up with; it's not like the public went around saying, 'we want a camera with the best of features of the 7/7R/7S series all wrapped in one CRAZY-EXPENSIVE package'! Boy was I wrong!! I am one of many loyal Sony users who will not buy their next-generation flagship model whenever it comes - why buy an A1II when better features will come in an FX3II/ZV-E1II/A7RVI for less money smh lol
It's frustrating for sure and makes me not want to think of Sony. I hope the Pana S1H2 comes out soon cause I am really looking at going back to them. I loved the GH5 but the autofocus killed it. Now they fixed the focus so I am back on team Pana. Can't believe that Sony would leave everyone like this.
I bought and still have my A7S3. The view-finder is a must have for me. WTF? Sony has firmware updates for other model cameras while ignoring my A7S3. It is a pisser.
At first, I wanted to pick up fx3 instead of a7s3 but found the viewfinder to be something useful and with the rest being pretty much identical went for a7s3. Now fx3 is getting updated with the great stuff and a7s3 gets nothing. Both cameras always been close to each other, Sony should keep it this way. And what about an expensive A1? not updating this one should feel like a super slap in the face to A1 owners. Sony should address this topic, otherwise, as many already stated, in the future I might not consider getting a new Sony, so there's no risk in picking up a camera that will be the chosen one amongst it's brothers to not get any updates and Sony will be quiet about it lol
Kasey, no other channel provides the entertainment and comedy like you do. I could care less about cameras that do Video ( I am a photographer) but I still watched this whole video to the end.
Yesterday, I watched a video from Wolfcrow about axial cuts from Spielberg and other great film makers. Today you did this epic shot at 11:18 about sitting and waiting for the firmware update. Well done 👍
Number 1 rule of tech is buying it for what it can give you now and not what it promises. BUTTT. I feel this a7siii firmware nonsense is a huge exception. As a current owner I am livid that literally every single other camera has been upgraded to be the best version of itself
This video made me sad. I feel for you Kasey. I always buy older cameras, knowing that there is not going to be more updates or firmware. Then I am never expecting anything and I know this is what I bought and now I am stuck. Hope you find the camera company that cares!
That is honestly the mindset you should keep going forward, don't buy into this need "new gear or new firmware" hype that most of the gear head or content creators buy into. Focus on the craft and not the gear and you will be superior to all these chumps!
A7SIII purchasers got played! It was heralded as the best for video and Sony knew the FX3 was right around the corner. All the while Gerald and others were calling the A7SIII "the perfect camera for video". Sony is laughing all the way to the bank! I think we should all be very weary of how Sony does business moving forward no matter what Sony camera you use. It was videographers who bought the A7SIII when it was released because they wanted the best camera for video at that price range. Shortly after that the FX3 was released surprising everyone. Many A7SIII owners decided to stick with their purchase because the two cameras were basically the same in different bodies. There was no communication from Sony, no indication or suggestion that the FX3 would be updated differently than the A7SIII to support videographers using Sony to make the best decision on what to own and why. This has nothing to do with when the camera was released and everything to do with long term customer support. Most youtubers were saying the cost hike of FX3 was due to the added handle with XLR ports. It would have been great if Sony had clearly explained the difference in paths the updates would take so customers could make informed choices as to what system was for them. it would have showed loyalty to customers over profits, which in turn would only increase their success.
So glad you're shining a light on this issue. I contacted them many times about the fake 4.3k pixel binned, alias-infected "raw" video to the Ninja V they advertised, which can't be raw with the inherent compression involved, thereby making it a marketing sham. Adding salt to the wound, they seem completely apathetic about adding firmware updates to their flagships cameras, the A1 in my case, while their less expensive cousins get them left and right. It's a perfect sign of the value they place on those customers who have invested so highly in them. The message is, the more you invest in our company, the more we will ignore you.
tips for your new BMPCC: make sure to use a cage, that can tighten the power cord and especially the mini HDMI cable, if you use one. The HDMI port is the achilles tendon of the OG BMPCC Get the Kingston Canvas Plus SD 256GB (green label), it's a modern, inexpensive SD card that works 100% with RAW and no frame drops Get a M4/3 lense that has built in optical image stabilization See if you can update the firmware. The newest firmware has a couple more options. People usually didn't update these cameras back then
Not only are you correct about the mini HDMI port, but it is probably already unreliable from occasional bumps in the past. Any company using a mini-hdmi port should be fine 1 billion dollars.
@@tech-utuber2219 Idk man but yeah I only see mini on my old D5500, even the newer ZV E10 has micro instead of mini, it’s supposed to be more reliable? Again I’m still waiting on my Ninja V
The only problem I have with Sony is that they screw us on firmware, just to sell another camera.I realize they have to make money but this is ridiculous.
You know what hurts more than not getting updates to the most expensive Sony cameras ? Is that the competition don’t take advantage of this ! If Nikon can supply their products flawlessly or Canon come out with a stacked sensor of their R5 ! Mark my words . Sony will regret what they are doing to their customers.
So much joy in Davinci Resolve updates. But Sony and the A7siii? It is heartbreaking. "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
I think with the A7SIII Sony released a camera that cut too much into their pro cine line range of cameras and they realized that. It was simply too good and they try to circumvent that now by leaving it dead in the water.
I agree, although I think they're probably wrong in the long run. A7siii sells to a huge amount of people who would not be able to afford the A1... But would pull the trigger to pay a little or even a lot more, but wouldn't have considered it before, purely because it's so good and bang for the buck. I think this nets them a far greater return than if they had kept a big gap between the A1 and the next tier.
Yeah, I feel your pain. The Canon R5 got a pretty decent firmware update recently, with animal eye detect and other improvements. Not for the Canon R5C, though. R5 and R5C are almost the same camera, so I expected to get the update as well. I was very disappointed. :(
Casey, Sony is clearly developing the same strategy as Canon and their C-Line of cameras. They are now advantaging that line to charge higher prices. They don't realize that the reason they became successful and surpassed Canon is exactly because of Canon's games in that department. Now, they fall into the same trap. You're right... can't abuse the consumer... if another company develops the same idea Sony did before it went the Canon path it will do well. Nikon? New Panasonic?
how in the flying banana toast has sony not shown any love the the A7s iii , is this a sign of things to come ? where sony goes out to buy milk and never comes back
It does seem weird that Sony would ignore it when it'd probably take little to no effort to port the firmware over from the FX3. But they charge more for the FX3 sans EVF so I guess this could be a case of forced obsolescence to push people toward their higher margin FX3.
Sony once again confirming that the a7 line is the amateur scrub line, and that everyone should have bought the FX3 or the ZV-E1. Not the a1 though, that one was a trap for the Olympics.
I truly believe that the A7sIII was supposed to be launched somewhere around 2019 or maybe 2018, but they saw that technology would allow them to go for the Fx3 instead, and maybe because during the pandemic everyone was buying cameras they decided to finally release it, and cash in before the Fx line arrival.

Side note: during your brief external audio outage, I learned one thing: that RF 24mm F/1.8 lens has a really loud autofocus motor. It sounded like a bunch of sand got inside. So much for stepping motors.
Wait 'til you hear/try the RF 50/1.8. Thing sounds like it's breaking as you're using it. I haven't heard such a loud lens, maybe, ever. At least not that I can recall.

I definitely feel for all of you A7SIII owners for not getting focus breathing compensation, which is definitely a very useful feature that i have on my A7IV. As a A7IV owner though, i also feel like sony Slapped me in the face when they announced their new lower tier ZV-E1 which features Fullframe 4K 60fps and Auto Framing which if you work alone and record your self in front of the camera it would be a very useful feature to have on the A7IV and even A7SIII which is an even higher end camera. As someone who has adopted into the SONY eco system, i will be waiting for an FX4 with features i need to make my recordings easier. But i feel let down about not having a 4K 60fps fullframe unlocked on my A7IV. Sony should at least do that as a final update to my A7IV. The same goes for those who want Focus Breathing Compensation for their A7SIII.
4k60 no crop might be due to hardware limitations on the a7iv. a7rv has a 1.24x crop in 4k60. Think it has to do with the method of sensor readout and processing power. But i agree, there should be something possible, wether it is tuning doen the bitrate options, color depth or something to make it possible.
I have learned my lesson years ago with how Sony has no regard for their products and customers once the sale has been made and took all of your money.
Try the Canon C70 if you can. But you have to take a tripod with it, unfortunately. Canon R3 is good too but the autofocus in the video is too all over the place for wildlife. I normally dumb it down and do not use Eye AF. That is why I think sometimes the more basic autofocus systems like the C70 are more natural and works very well in most conditions. Of course, manual is needed sometimes but you can just twist the dial on the RF lens and goes straight into manual. RF glass is very nice coming from Sony but comes at a price. But if you can try the C70 with 100-500Rf you get some nice results. Add a cheap viewfinder and that's all that is needed.
I have a feeling that Sony will be releasing a A7$4 and they want those features in the new version to "encourage" you to upgrade. While the FX3 uses the same sensor the camera is newer and Sony doesn't have plans to release a new version in the near future so it gets the update. It's makes sense from Sony's perspective of getting existing owners to upgrade to new cameras.
It only makes sense in regards to profits. The expectation that any A7s III user would willing upgrade to a FX3 when it dropped or to the next gen A series is fucking ridiculous. There’s no defending big corps in this
@@flickedbyboog If they are going to release the new version to the A7s3 this year they would want people to buy that camera instead for these features. I've been raging about not only the fact that they literally require breathing comp for their gmaster lenses to really be great but also that more high profile sony shooters aren't being hard enough on them for allowing this shit to happen.
3:55 They did the same for Samsung phones, higher end Note models were getting latest version while the expensive high ends were not, not camera related by same concept.
I'm so disappointed about the A7S3. I have one and an FX30, the recent update makes the FX30 so fun to use, I slapped my Sirui anamorphic on yesterday with DCI 4K. I'm hoping Atomos updates the Ninja V so I can get 24.00fps DCI on it. I tried the 4.7k raw which is gorgeous but my computer literally crashes when I try to work with it, and it ain't an old machine 😑 (although it may be a Nvidia driver issue according to Adobe, will have to investigate). Just found this on Reddit which is pretty messed up. Are you able to mention in a future video to bring attention to it? Thanks dude love your content. pasted from Reddit and link below: I got the unofficial reason why A7S III is not getting firmware updates... Discussion So we all know about how the FX3, FX30, and even the new ZV-E1 has firmware updates like lens breathing compensation, DCI 4K, anamorphic desqueeze, etc, but the more expensive A7S III does not. I was at a Sony event a little while ago (not going to give specifics) and ended up having drinks with a Sony rep after it finished. I was able to get an "unofficial" answer as to why these updates are not making its way into the A7S3. Internally within Sony, they have different divisions for their cinema line, their creators line, and the photography focused Alpha line. These 3 lines report up to the same person, who then report to "Imaging Solutions". The executive responsible for all 3 lines has been given targets to hit around the FX and ZV lines by "Imaging Solutions". The lead responsible for ICLE absolutely wants to ship lens breathing compensation, etc, and apparently there is even prototype firmware for the A7S3 that fully supports this functionality, however it is being blocked by this person because they're worried about cannibalizing sales for the ones he has harder-to-hit targets for. This is all the information I was able to get, I'm not going to extrapolate any further, and for obvious reasons I don't have any evidence as this is just a casual conversation and I don't want to get anyone in trouble. But from this convo, it's even more clear to me there are no hardware or functionality limitations, but it is a business decision by Sony. As the owner of an A7S3, I'm pretty upset. www.reddit.com/r/A7siii/comments/133mlyh/i_got_the_unofficial_reason_why_a7s_iii_is_not/
I just purchased the Fx 30 and I absolutely love it, but deep in the pit of my stomach I know Sony is coming with something better and cheaper and ill regret it really soon 🤦🏿♂️
nah man honestly it's good you got a camera because if you kept waiting, the perfect camera would never arrive. just shoot away and don't worry about the rest!
You thought cripplehammer was a Canon exclusive? Sony made abundantly clear that FX is their video line aimed at professionals, they can't afford to let the A7S3 steal the show. I'm guessing the specialty lines will receive more attention and the hybrid options will get left to dry. Selling two cameras for two purposes sounds like better business than selling a do-it-all.
Whats even weirder is not that I have true 24p on my FX30...cant use it in RAW Output on my Ninja V. And almost all my clients want RAW...so it was a useless update to me.
A7iv has bird and animal eye ar in video, surprises the A7siii doesn’t. I suppose it depends on what you want, I suppose it depends if you’re obsessed slowmo or not. I can’t remember if there’s a 100% Center crop mode on the A7iv or new A7rV for 4k video, which would help for reach. A7rV apparently has Improved AF, I already found the A7iv has ridiculously good AF. I think 4k Center crop is there but there is no 1080p 120 100% crop mode on the A7iv which is annoying.. it’d be useful to get a Center crop with that
The fundamental rule for Sony updates is that people who might buy a new camera will not get any updates. People who just bought the darn thing will get a boatload of updates. Why (might you ask) would the people who need the updates the most not receive them? It is the same crowd that might buy another camera out of frustration. Get Tony to bark about it. The camera manufacturers listen to him because he has nice hair.
I can see how the explanation can be that it's the cinema line upgrades, our a7siii isn't that. But like you said, it's a video oriented camera, why not?!

As someone who's been considering going to Sony, their business model for product firmware support makes me hesitant.
Technically maybe it's possible update 7Siii with FX3 firmware, but it requeres some programming skills and is risky.
Pay attention Sony. It’s why I haven’t upgraded my A7Riii as it doesn’t appear Sony is supporting their top cameras anymore with ongoing firmware
For some weird reason, UA-cam decided to set the default resolution for your video at 720p. I blame Sony for this...
Will Panasonic S1H II be the GoAT of video cameras?
We all knew what this video was about as soon as we saw the thumbnail... but we still came to watch the marvelous rant.
I’m pretty sure there was a meeting where they fired the A7siii engineer for doing too good of a job.
The message is, the more you invest in our company, the more we will ignore you.
tips for your new BMPCC:
make sure to use a cage, that can tighten the power cord and especially the mini HDMI cable, if you use one. The HDMI port is the achilles tendon of the OG BMPCC
Get the Kingston Canvas Plus SD 256GB (green label), it's a modern, inexpensive SD card that works 100% with RAW and no frame drops
Get a M4/3 lense that has built in optical image stabilization
See if you can update the firmware.

Man I am seriously entertained watching and listening to you talk about cameras, the Robin, and the squirrel. So witty!! 😂 Keep em coming man 👏👏❤
You know what hurts more than not getting updates to the most expensive Sony cameras ? Is that the competition don’t take advantage of this ! If Nikon can supply their products flawlessly or Canon come out with a stacked sensor of their R5 ! Mark my words . Sony will regret what they are doing to their customers.
So much joy in Davinci Resolve updates. But Sony and the A7siii? It is heartbreaking. "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."
Yes!!! It's like Christmas every time with DR. New, unexpected goodies *every* time
I believe the FX3 is the planned firmware update for the A7siii.
Change the name of your camera to FX3 on PC, remove the on camera lables, hide the EVF and you will be able to update it.
I truly believe that the A7sIII was supposed to be launched somewhere around 2019 or maybe 2018, but they saw that technology would allow them to go for the Fx3 instead, and maybe because during the pandemic everyone was buying cameras they decided to finally release it, and cash in before the Fx line arrival.

im on the same boat with sony A1... quite upsetting... seriously contemplating selling it
Side note: during your brief external audio outage, I learned one thing: that RF 24mm F/1.8 lens has a really loud autofocus motor. It sounded like a bunch of sand got inside. So much for stepping motors.
That's the old 24mm f1.4 L mark i L lens. And ya it's loud lol.
@@cameraconspiracies OK, thanks. That's one fault of many Canon lenses, including the Ls.

@@pandavaas I thought it was a longer term investment. I still love the camera but the autofocus sucks and it's missing a bunch of things that should have been added and updated. Huge slap in the face.
@@Giovanni-Giorgio Exactly! Readout of a7rv sensor is much slower!
I have learned my lesson years ago with how Sony has no regard for their products and customers once the sale has been made and took all of your money.
The Sony A1 - “The Flagship” - Software updates for new features like other cameras…. Errr nope
Yay 11:20 the Squirrel Whisperer is back
Try the Canon C70 if you can.
But it cold also be possible that they feel the FX3 is the replacement for the A7s3 since it is a video centric camera using the same sensor. Either way they want a7s3 users to buy a new camera.
@@petercofrancesco9812 I hear you. But my point still stands: Sony doesn’t care about specific niche users and the leaks are showing. “Ooh, well Sony wants us to buy the next thing” is bullshit raped when there are other companies supporting the users.
@@flickedbyboog Sony is no better or worse than the other manufactures. They all do it a bit different. Have you not heard of the Canon Cripple? Remember decade long 29.9 minute limit that all the manufactures imposed? Then mysterously disappeared without explanation.
Couldn't agree more! Everyone's excited about the new cameras that came out recently. I was like, wtf????? ZV-E1, FX3, FX30, A74, A7R5, all of them can do something better then the A7S3 and not a single update. I feel like a fool to invest 4 grant in a camera, and then to see at least 4 or 5 cameras using the same features than the A7S3 and cheaper! WHY SONYYYYY? WHY????
At this point both my Sony a7siii and fx6 are pretty much less capable than the fx30. I called and asked Sony about it but am a no body they just told me to take a hike. Am glad content creating are speaking maybe Sony will listen. I hope you Ferald Undone and Phillip Bloom will make a collaborative video in regard to this issues.
I've been raging about not only the fact that they literally require breathing comp for their gmaster lenses to really be great but also that more high profile sony shooters aren't being hard enough on them for allowing this shit to happen.
3:55 They did the same for Samsung phones, higher end Note models were getting latest version while the expensive high ends
were not, not camera related by same concept.
I can't talk about the firmware situation, I lose coherence, I'm very angry about it, and I'm angry because I don't want to leave Sony.
Hello, how is the low light capability of fx30 compared to a7s3? Thank you
@@lcollet4530 oh the a7S3 is waaaaay better. In slog3 on the fx30 the base ISO's are 800 and 2500. Compared to the a7S3 at 640 and 12800. I find the 4 odd stop range way more useful. 4k 120fps on the a7S3 is also miles ahead, next to no crop and way less noise. In ideal conditions the two are indistinguishable, but the fx30 is not nearly as versatile.
@@snaprifice I appreciate the feedback! The price of the fx30 is so tempting but lowlight is my biggest concern, especially outdoors when I am hiking in darker conditions…As you mentioned in ideal conditions they are indistinguishable, that is very promising.

I'm not gonna lie, the recent update for the FX30 is amazing and great for Anamorphics. Not trying to rub it in 😅
I talked to a sony rep at NAB, and you are correct. The Sony A7siii is dead in terms of firmware support. It's managed by their camera department, not the cinema department, and they have no interest in releasing further feature support. Even the FX3 and FX30 still have features in the pipeline (the rep teased that false color is being worked on), but all of us A7siii owners got screwed because we decided to order the camera a few months earlier. I got the unofficial reason why A7S III is not getting firmware updates...
Discussion
So we all know about how the FX3, FX30, and even the new ZV-E1 has firmware updates like lens breathing compensation, DCI 4K, anamorphic desqueeze, etc, but the more expensive A7S III does not.

I think 4k Center crop is there but there is no 1080p 120 100% crop mode on the A7iv which is annoying.. it’d be useful to get a Center crop with that
I knew I could count on you for this video unlike my Sony a7s3 firmware update.

This new rant vs. wildlife format is a winner!
I can see how the explanation can be that it's the cinema line upgrades, our a7siii isn't that. But like you said, it's a video oriented camera, why not?!
