Miranda Richardson here speaks with the kind of clipped upper-class accent that nurse characters used to have in 1940s-1950s war films. The cast in this series were excellent.

When interrogating cpt. Darling: Darling: I’m as British as Queen Victoria! Blackadder: Ah, so your father is German, you are half-German and married to a German?
I think he is a little flummoxed by the fluffy bunny act being shown to be an act. SPOILER Her behaviour also arouses his suspicions, as well as his libido.
+Yonis Ali I don't think it's the uniform. I think it's the facial hair. (Seriously, facial hair suits Atkinson surprisingly well! Especially in Blackadder II!)
Poor Brigadier Sir Bernard Proudfoot-Smith. Cursed to forever speak like you are the most obvious German spy after picking up the accent in daring missions.
George is soooooooo cute! He’s my favorite Blackadder character, I love his sweetness, innocence, and naïveté (I don’t think he’s dumb, just inexperienced and way out of his league).
My favourite part in this episode. Baldrick: You go round the hostipal and ask everyone, “Are you a German spy?” Edmund: Yes, I must say, Baldrick, I appreciate your involvement on the creative side. Baldrick: If it was me, I’d own up. Edmund: Of course you would. But, sadly, the enemy have not added to the German Army Entrance Form the requirement “Must have intellectual capacity of a boiled potato.”
That first series set in the 15th century was so innovative that it was compulsive viewing at the time. The grotesque young Blackadder, snivelling, cowardly, awkward, ugly, spindly-legged, was a brilliant character. I enjoyed the sometimes pseudo-Shakespearean dialogue, e.g. when he meets the three witches in a Macbeth-type scene and addresses them as "ye loathsome drabs". The very clever successor Blackadders were completely different. In all of them the writing is so witty it would be a hard act to follow.
Exactly the way I always experienced Blackadder. The later series were witty as a fox who studied witty at Oxford University then moved on and is now working for the U.N. at the High Commisssion for high wittiness, but the original series can never be bettered because it delivered the original wittiness and cunning plans that set the tone for every laugh we ever enjoyed up until Captain Blackadder went up that splintery ladder. (I'm only counting the full series. The special was side splitting hilarious, but can't be put alongside the real thing)
Both Miranda's characters in Series III and IV have similar twists - both presented at first as "wetter than a fish's wet bits", but later turning out to have hidden depths and a surprising dark side! (By the way, I believe Nurse Mary was still a spy, even if George's Uncle Herman was the one writing to Melchett, etc - I mean, she never actually denied being a spy when Blackadder accused her!!)
"... so, back in England I'm a 20-a-day-man." Brilliant example of British understatement. Because that's only one full pack of Player's Navy Cut Cigarettes.
George: Smithy, you haven't seen any suspicious looking characters around, have you, who might be German spies? Smith: Nein. George: NINE! Well, the captain's got his work cut out.
@@mizofan I think that you might find that the "I knew a nurse" is a reference to knowing her in the biblical sense, as in there was a whole lot of "begat" going on as opposed to knowing her socially in polite company.
Reminds me of a *Private Eye* front cover from 1985, in which Princess Michael of Kent's father or father-in-law at Wimbledon says, "What's this about you having a lover?" She says, "Nein!" and her husband says, "Surely not that many?"
It's a black comedy, but somehow this over the top "captain and a nurse" scene is much more realistic, believable and natural than anything you could see in any "serious" love story.

They could act and had comic timing
Rare today.
I once saw a pre WW2 movie in which a Gypsy had the same upper class cut glass accent
Miranda Richardson totally makes that scene, the way she stylises that way of being, like an exaggerated 1930's romantic movie
She nailed that typical femme fatale type character in noir films
