You got the “in the crease” rule backward. It didn’t become a rule because of Brett Hull, they got rid of the rule because of Brett Hull. After the 1999 Stanley Cup Finals when he scored the game winning goal in 3OT with his skate clearly in the crease and the goal wasn’t even reviewed, the rule was quietly abolished the following season. Trust me. I’m from Buffalo. We remember.
You are correct. But, I was more so referring to the fact that Brett Hull set a precedent within that ruling. The entire regular season it was a crap show of goals being disallowed and inconsistencies. After the Hull goal, it set a precedent in which the "crease rule" developed into "goaltender interference" which I what I referenced in the video.
@@RobTalksHockey yeah, he was absolutely the catalyst for a rule change. It was always a bit of a strange rule, and it felt like every other goal was being called back in the mid-late 90s, even when the offending player had nothing to do with the play. I’ll even admit that nothing about that fateful goal to end the series was dirty or cheap, but it WAS against the rules at the time, and it sucks that it had to be a game with that much riding on it for the league to decide to change course. 22 years later that still stings.
@@brettvanderbrook That was a bummer for Sabres fans. I remember it well, although since the actual goal was scored at 2am EDT (or something like that), very few east coast fans actually saw it.
@@RobTalksHockey true. The league was ridding itself of that rule but they DID enforce it all season including the playoffs. I was at the no goal game and as a sabres fanI’ll take that garbage to my grave.
@@brettvanderbrook Came to the comments to say this. The rule at the time was so stupid. It felt like every goal was TBD by replay, for if any offensive player's skate was in the crease, ANYWHERE in the crease---even if the goalie was six feet away on the other side of the net, it was no goal. As such, the Hull goal was clearly in violation of a really dumb rule.
I was at the game Pitkanen got hurt. After the initial "ooh" from crowd, it went dead silent in there and you could hear him yelling in pain the entire time. Just sickening. I knew right then that we would be seeing hybrid icing soon.
It was very stupid of the NHL to not already have that rule in place.
I was in the 300 level off to the side where it happened. I can still hear that snap when he hit the boards to this day. Brutal event.

Sergei Makarov made a rule by winning the Calder Trophy at age 31. And the rule is right now is that players can't win the Calder Trophy who are 25 or older.

To better explain the last one, the rule during the '99 Finals was, "Unless the puck is in the goal crease area, a player of the attacking side may not stand in the goal crease. If a player has entered the crease prior to the puck, and subsequently the puck should enter the net while such conditions prevail, the apparent goal shall not be allowed."
Players, coaches and fans were understandably frustrated when Hull had his skate in the crease. Goals like that one were disallowed commonly throughout that year, to the frustration of effectively the entire NHL.
The current rulebook has instead "In other words, goals scored while attacking players are standing in the crease may, in appropriate circumstances be allowed. Goals should be disallowed only if: (1) an attacking player, either by his positioning or by contact, impairs the goalkeeper’s ability to move freely within his crease or defend his goal; or (2) an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, inside or outside of his goal crease. Incidental contact with a goalkeeper will be permitted, and resulting goals allowed, when such contact is initiated outside of the goal crease, provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact."
His goal was good one year before that and was good later. But not that year. I remember dozens of good goals disallowed because someone had toe in the crease but had nothing to do with the game. So by rules forced that year, it was a no goal. It was a goal before that season, it was a goal after that season. And Hull just made that stupid rule be overwritten.

@@RoyalMela I remember that rule as the "toenail in the crease" rule, anyone has so much as a hear on their head, a lace on their skate or an errant toenail fall in the crease and that goals not gonna count. There were so many goals disallowed that year because of that rule, and that was right in the middle of the Dead Puck era too, so goals were few enough as it was without about 5-10% of them being disallowed, even if the shoelace in the crease was off in the far corner and had no bearing on the play at all. I was so happy when that stupid rule was ended.

That wasn't Duchane's fault. That was the fault of the linesmen. More importantly, the fault of the league for NOT thinking this rule change through. Thus creating one of the worst rules in league history.

Actually there is a story even more tragic behind the icing rule. In 1990 Czech player Luděk Čajka died after crashing into the boards. IIHF then switched to automatic icing rule, while NHL continued with the original. Since 2014 the ruling is united using the hybrid icing rule.

We had some players here in Sweden who today sits in a wheelchair. I was checked in my back. But I was lucky. The guy who checked me was scared.
The first one that comes to my mind is David Leggio who was the reason of the same rule change twice: first in the AHL and later also in the German DEL. He didn‘t like his chances as a goalie in a 2-0 situation and threw over the goal itself instead of facing the attackers. That action only prompted a penalty shot in both leagues at that point which he liked better as he saved both of the penalty shots that followed. The AHL introduced a rule that would award the offending goalie a game misconduct + the penalty shot on the next goalie, and the DEL even awards a goal against the team with the offending goalie now.

A good one to mention is how Sean Avery forced the NHL to make a new rule. He was screening a goalie by waving his stick in the goalie's face, which isn't allowed anymore.

I won’t explain why, for anyone who might somehow be here and yet not know what happened that horrible night in Buffalo, but that incident is directly responsible for the existence of, as well as the mandate to wear, goalkeepers’ throat guards. Or, to give them a more accurate name, gorgets. Yes, this incident mandated *medieval armour* in hockey, and thank the Gods it did. Who knows how many lives it has saved?

Ingmar Stenmark also made FIS to change the rules. You can look it up, but the short story is after the rule change you had to compete in all disciplines to be able to win the world cup. E.i. Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G and Downhill. He was so dominant that I would argue it's a dead race between him and Gretzky.
Hybrid Icing was the one change I was super happy about. Especially after that guys injury.
I'm sure all European players agreed. For Joni I would've hoped the change happened earlier. Nice guy, good player, beautiful skater and in his prime. Was never able to play hockey again at any level.

Same! When I played in High School we had a freshman get sent to the hospital because a senior on the other team with a big body, during a footrace for the puck, decided to level this tiny 15 year old.

That hit is absolutely the dirtiest play in history without a doubt.
the reason slashing went up is because the instigator and fighting rule adjustments... and nobody carries a fighter anymore, so it's just players that can't fight, slashing everyone.
Game's just too fast these days. Hard to justify giving a roster spot to an enforcer, he's gotta be able to play.
I think it's not as simple as it's all 100% this or that. I think what you say was A factor, but not the ONLY factor. For sure I did notice the crackdown on fighting did make the games more chippy in other ways, like more slashing, dirty hits, etc, but also policy changes in how games are called can and does also make a huge impact. There were probably about 1000-1100 slashes a year even before that rule change but only about 60-70% of the slashes were actually being called by the refs and that policy change resulted in a higher percentage being actually called after that. Obviously, even under a 0 tolerance if it's in the books as a penalty we'll call it policy, they'll never call 100% of the infractions because even the best NHL level refs will miss stuff, but ideally, I'd like to see them go for getting the number of called penalties vs committed penalties as close to 100% as possible.
I do ascribe to the Don Cherry mantra of "let them play the game" but not for the same reason of the refs not calling penalties. No, I like it as in call the rules consistently and fairly. Anytime, anywhere, anyone. Just call what's in the rulebook. If a rule's stupid, we'll all see it as such and demand the league change it. To me "let them play the game" means the game described in the NHL rulebook. That book describes what playing the game means in the NHL. Letting a slash here, a grab there, a trip, a hook, a hit from behind, etc go means you're not letting them play the game, you're warping it into some WWE/NHL hybrid where the rules only apply when it's convenient for a story.

Chara’s hit on Pacioretty wasn’t an accident. Chara isn’t blind, you can clearly tell he avoided most of the contact until right before the glass stared again and pushed him into it. Dirty ass play and saying it was an accident doesn’t do justice to it.

Patrick Roy gave playoff games to the Stars because he went to the corner to play the puck and paid for it. He had to be protected from his own stupidity.

Fun fact: the IIHF intrduced Hybrid ICing as well but it was making the game more aggressive as up until then, every puck who went from behind the midline to behind the red line was instantly waved off as icing even if no D had a chance on it and the Attacker was racing for it. So IMO it was a blessing for both :)

As a longtime Sharks fan I also remember one of my favorite Sharks players Marco Sturm breaking his leg on a icing call. Sturm ended up being part of the Joe Thornton trade because he was never the same player after that injury.

I mean when you finally chop someone's finger nearly off I think the NHL allowed Crosby to do his slashing thing for far too long. And he did not care that it happened.
They also didn’t care that people were trying to actually murder Crosby, his multiple concussions could have easily taken his life

It’s actually very easy to debate that Mario Lemieux was just as good as Gretzky, as Lemieux spent most of his career in great pain from his back injuries while still putting up the numbers he got. Not only that but his career was cut short after multiple back surgeries.

Many notes:
1 - Brodeur is the only reason the NHL has a trapezoid. One of TWO rule changes specifically targeting the Devils. Yes, Turco also played the puck a lot, but if Brodeur didn't exist, neither would that trapezoid, although Brodeur was heavily influenced by Hextall.
2 - "Interference" became a thing after NJ won the cup in 1995. NJ had one of the most dominant Cup runs ever that year going 16-4 en route.
3 - Kurtis Foster almost died on an icing play, broke his femur in two different spots and almost died of internal bleeding. Don Cherry was begging the NHL for years to change that rule and finally they came up with Hybrid Icing, which was really clever.
4 - Hull was the reason that strict rule ENDED, not the reason it began. That rule was causing headaches to the NHL all season before it culminated in the Cup winning goal and the NHL finally decided enough is enough. And that rule was quite loosened/reinterpreted after that play.
Crosby takes a lot of abuse but not nearly as much was #66. BTW, I loved watching Mario. He had some of the most beautiful goals I’ve ever seen in my fifty years of watching hockey.
Mario is the most talented and the most dominant player to ever play the game, not even Gretzky was that dominant and talented. In my opinion Mario Lemieux is without a doubt the best player in NHL history, period
I used to play minor hockey, (minor as in 10u, 12u, on and on) and one of our players was a superstar, best scorer in the league, best assists the best kid, number… idk I’ll just call him Bernstein but, he got over 44 injuries or penalties against the Other teams within 3 games

Chara's hit wasn't a "freak accident". Pacioretty got under Z's skin over a few games, things got to a boil and Chara lost his temper. Interference was called on the play. It was intentional even if there was no suspension

Chara 100% meant to lay out Patches. But what i mean by "freak accident"... Nobody could've known in real time that he was going to break his neck/give him a serious concussion. That was the freak accident, not the hit.

Its funny to me how so many newer hockey fans missed the era where Crosby was straight up vicious with his stick. Slashing guys left and right, taking a guy's finger off, saying he didn't mind/was happy that Claude Giroux needed wrist surgery after one of his slashes when that particular rivalry was at its peak. So many people remember the Cries-by rep or the Sid we see now, but he had some rattier qualities that get forgotten behind that.
While some of the "Rattiness" might be natural in Crosby, a lot of it comes from the fact refs "don't want to decide games", and don't call those crosschecks (see this video)/trips/holds/slashes/hooks/interference/facewashes. When you don't get the call, you tend to do the same thing back, because if they can get away with it, why not you, defending yourself? I mean, check out some of the "best Mario Lemieux goals" videos. The slashing (Graves anyone?), the INSANE hooking, etc. It's no wonder Mario had a bad back, he was always carrying a defender on it. Scott Stevens was a "great D man"... except his technique of "defense" was to elbow players in the head, or hold them into submission, etc. NHL is slowly moving towards a "skill based game", but the old timers will lament the loss of the "old game" where hits were legal to the head (Matt Cooke style, which was also Pronger/Stevens style, etc).

I think you got the last one wrong... Brett Hull broke that rule you said he introduced, because of the Malarchuk incident. That rule was removed and changed after he scored that controversial goal.

Oddly the NHL had already amended the rule prior to the 99 playoffs because of the goals getting waved off. Referees were informed but it was not widely known to the public. Hull's goal was good, although the NHL really looked bad in the aftermath and Hull took the heat.
I could've done a better job explaining! I was more so referring to the fact that Brett Hull's goal set a precedent, which the league would use to modify the existing rule.
The league said a memo went out months earlier regarding changes to that rule, so the goal was allowed to stand.

You should’ve added the whole Montreal Canadiens team for the rule that ends a minor penalty as soon as the power play team scores. Because Montreal was so incredibly dominant back in the days that as soon as the other team would get a penalty, Montreal would score 2-3 or more goals during that 2 minutes penalty, so the NHL was forced to change that just because of MTL! They were so dominant that the games were already lost for the other team as soon as Montreal would get a power play

I'm not a fan of the goalie crease rule. But damn, goalies these days are getting hammered. Sometimes having to decide between saving the puck and protecting themselves.

Yeah and the NHL claimed a Memo went out addressing the issue prior to that game. The fact is the NHL has zero interest in taking goals off the scoreboard because "goal scoring is exciting to fans"
what was controversial about Hull's goal was that at the time if a skate was in the crease, the goal was supposed to be called back, no matter how the skate got there.
I remember Don Cherry talking about the Hybrid icing after that injury. CBC showed an absolutely brutal clip of a game years before in Ottawa where one player ate the boards and was bleeding down him face.
Cherry probably said it's a stupid rule. "Good old Canadian car crash hockey" to cherry. He loved players getting concussions, short careers because of dirty hits, and of course hated anyone who wasn't Canadian, especially if they were darker than him.

actually, you are wrong about the Brett Hull incident. The NHL was cracking down on players crowding the net and the instituted a rule where if you were in the crease the goal was waived off no matter what. The rule took a lot away from the game, fans never knew if a goal a goal was actually scored or not and video replay took over. It was brutal. So, halfway through that season, the NHL changed the rule so that a player could enter the crease but only after the puck entered the crease. Unfortunately, many fans didn't get that rule change memo, but Brett Hull's goal was legal and legit (I was cheering for Buffalo).
Another thing that for sure influenced the slashing calls was Johnny Gaudreau getting his hands wacked *over 20 times* in a game against the wild in the 2016-17 season, with the final one (#22(?)) breaking his hand, that incident sparked the conversation but the Crosby incident definitely is what forced the NHLs hand, no pun intended
I remember Don Cherry on Coaches Corner, Screaming about the icing rules. I think the NHL's argument at the time was that the "chase for the puck" was exciting. Don was right though.

Gretzky thinks the removal of the two-line pass rule will result in more injuries. It hasnt. It has, however, resulted in a faster, more freely flowing game.

The thing with the crease rule wasn't that it was vague, because it wasn't. It said that if an opposition player is in the crease it's no goal. And that was stupid because you'd have goals called back because of a toenail over the line and the NHL realized how stupid that was. After Hull scored the goal the NHL saw that the rule didn't have to be that strict to protect the goalies.

You forgot about the master of finding loopholes, Tony Esposito. He made them rewrite a lot of rules for goalies
People were pissed at Hull not just because his foot was in the crease, but they called that rule automatic all year until the biggest moment of the season
Again, you’d have to be aware that any part of the body in the crease without full puck control was absolutely prohibited at the time. Hulls foot breaks the semi circle before he gains control of the puck.
We can argue about how stupid the rule was, and it was, but it was automatic… until that moment. Buffalo had a fair grievance here

i did not realize that before gretzky coincidental minors did not change manpower on ice. it sphould also be noted that wayne gretzky may have been responsible for rule change that coincidental minors did not change manpower, but the rule has gone back to the way it used to be and 4 on 4 or 4 on 3s do happen again.

The Frazen play was a goal. In the rules they still allow a goal if an attacking player is in the crease if the player doesn’t interfere with any movement and/or doesn’t make any contact with the goalie with Frazen doesn’t do either. The goalie had plenty of space to move around and besides pushing Frazen himself no contact was made

This year, didn’t Sean Avery change the unsportsmanlike conduct rule to include getting up in the goalie’s face without even looking to play the puck?

Boston goalie Gerry Cheevers was responsible for having the NHL institute the automatic delay-of-game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass from your own end of the ice. He did it way too frequently whenever the Bruins were under attack. I recall one game in Vancouver where he threw the puck over the glass. I think that incident was the last straw for the NHL. (I'm a lifetime Boston fan, by the way.)
You got the Brett Hull one incorrect. The rule to not be in the crease was in place. His goal should have been disallowed because of that rule even though it didn’t effect the goalie, hence why they switched it to the initial shot only. The original rule took the fun out of the game in a major way.
The rule was changed prior to the season to allow a goal to count as long as the player enters the crease after the puck does and continue to have sole possession. A rebound from a shot off the goalie, post, player or anything else do not change who has posession.
The NHL has literally spent 30 years issuing statements that the rule was indeed changed before the goal. The only change that came after was the "no harm no foul" rules for goaltender contact in the crease and increased size of the crease.
Yes but what I failed to explain was that this situation set the precedent of the rule change. Yes he didn’t make the rule, but he definitely had a huge influence on the future rulings
@@RobTalksHockey the whole situation was handled poorly by the nhl. I think some people are confusing the crease rule change with the no harm no foul crease contact rule changed the next season.

the year that hull scored that goal, he was in the crease. the rule had been in effect for a couple of years and with the rule the goal should have been disallowed, it wasn't. the old rule in the nhl was if the puck was in the crease you could go in after it. to protect goalies the nhl changed the rule so that no one could go in the crease at all and also change the shape of the crease from square to the shape we see today. when hull scored that goal it should have been disallowed but wasn't but to cover themselves the nhl changed the rule again to what we have now.

Oh, and Crosby's slashing basically ended Giroux's reign of dominance. Giroux was the highest scoring player up to 2012. Well, when Crosby couldn't best him in the dot of the 2012 playoff series, he just started to slash Giroux in the hands and wrists instead of trying to win a draw he knew he was going to lose anyway. So, he just started slashing Giroux every faceoff. Giroux had to have surgery to fix the broken tendons and was never the same. He's still the best passer and faceoff guy in the NHL but he can't move his wrists like he used to, which is why he had the best (maybe 2nd or 3rd best) hands in the NHL. He still has amazing hands but he was never the same. Then, he had a golf club blow up in his hand and that sealed it.

Fun fact for ya, Hybrid Icing was first used in American Junior hockey (NA3HL, NAHL, USHL). The professional leagues adopted hybrid icing from them.

The NHL isn't still following the 'Gretzky Rule'. It was rescinded during the 92-93 season.
So nowadays, when there's coincidental minors while teams are skating 5-on-5, both players go to the box and the teams play 4-on-4 for the duration of the penalty.
The rule gets confusing if the teams aren't skating 5-on-5, or other factors come into play.
Hell, you can stand behind a goalie in the crease as long as you don't touch him.

One of the most misunderstood rules!! The player that first controlled the puck could be in the crease. But that was such a moment to try and explain that!! But think about football and the defender that rides the player out of bounds is the only player that can have contact out of bounds!! Same idea
