It wasn't injuries with Niedermayer, it was because he (and Teemu Selanne - who was a free agent) decided not to play at the start of the 07-08 season. Both Scott and Teemu couldn't decide if they wanted to retire, and because Scott was still under contract, he was formally suspended when he didn't report to training camp. Yes, and I should've done a better job explaining the entire situation. But you also left out the context that Scott was recruited specifically to lead and captain the Ducks when they were a non playoff team. He single handedly elevated them to cup finish within 3 years, and was stripped within months of winning because he was contemplating retirement. Not to mention that only 2 years later Scott would captain the Vancouver 2010 team, that was made up of only captains and the best leaders in the league. Number 11 was unofficially retired by the team, so they allowed the POS to take it, over the objections of the family of the player who wore it, Wayne Maki, who died of a brain tumor. Ownership was also crap in those days, having taken over from the Griffiths family.
Theoren Fleury. Brian Leetch. Mike Modano. All great players who were handed the captaincy of their teams by default, and all proved to be not up to the task.
I got stripped of my C in varsity. A girl falsely accused me of rape and my coach decided it'd be best for the team if I didn't wear a letter. The girl ended up moving towns after everyone realized she lied, she also caught the clap from some dirt bag so justice was served boys. Im living my best life 10 years later and have found a good honest girl to be with.
Yeah, as a Canucks fan growing up, I remember the Mess that Messier made. My dad never liked him, even in his Oilers days. Always said he was a dirty player. Then he comes in and guts the Canucks? He is not liked in the West household.
I would argue that Steve Yzerman is the ultimate leader/captain over Messier. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a toss-up at best, and I’m biased as a Michigander. But he’s literally THE Captain. Might have half the cups but he built the Lightning that won 2 cups, and he’s back home in Detroit now, building more Stanley Cup teams. The quintessential captain. THE. Captain.
Yanno, now, I’ve got a video suggestion. Give us a top 5 or top 10 of NHL captains in history 😂 it’ll spark a truckload of discussion and arguments in the comments and warrant at least some sort of sequel video.
Yo Rob, this got my wife and I talking about team chemistry and production. I'd/we'd really love to see you do a series of > great players on the wrong team. < Like take for example Vrana and Mantha. 2 players that weren't really producing then got traded and hit their new teams running. There's way more examples. Martinez and Toffoli.
Although goalie is the most important position in hockey I also think that since they are defending the goal 100% of the time, they see the game from a completely different angle than the attackers. Which is why I think a captain should be an attacker, because he is able to talk with his team at all times, and see the game the same way.
Hi Rob, great video, in light of the recent Habs destiny run, I think a video about the greatest underdog runs in NHL history would be good. Or an NHL greatest rookies or breakout seasons would be awesome too!
Nieds thought about retiring all that summer. I even remember him holding a press conference only to say he will have an update at another press conference down the road. Also remember Burkie being visibly frustrated while saying Nieds has earned that right to take his time. Couldn't wait forever and Pronger was a leader anyway so it was pretty much a no-brainer out of necessity and not so much a stripping.
the notion that weber was statistically worse than subban at the time of the trade is blatantly and objectively false, in a one for one weber even as the older player had more trade value. goals and assists are cool but theyre defensemen and weber is twice as good as subban defensively, no amount of points will offset that
Not my team but the most controversial captaincy stripping has got to be that of Patrick Marleau to Joe Thornton in the Sharks. That divided the Sharks' fanbase into two bases and they would never be brought together until the last couple of years.
Being the best player, does not automatically mean they are leaders. (Before the rebuild ) I talk to training staff in the Canucks locker room, who claimed that after linden as captain, communication broke down from the top players down. That's what I've been told. Take it or leave it. After captain linden, Vancouver had terrible leaders who didn't communicate with the confidence that captains need
Broke my heart as a Canucks fan when Roberto Luongo didn't win the Stanley Cup in 2011. He never was the same after that last appearance. It seems that we are just never lucky when it comes to the Stanley Cup Finals.
The entire team imploded during the finals, but he was especially dreadful in the finals. Boston scored a lot of terrible goals during the finals. No sympathy for Lou whatsoever. He should have won the Conn Smythe because he was that valuable...to the Bruins.
You should do a video on the dirtiest players and add up how many games they missed from suspension and how much money was fined from them throughout their careers.
Pavelski is a solid 1 Also, I can't get behind the Shea Weber comments in the video. Overall much better dman, than PK. Preds core slowed down in offensive skill. He saw impact. Happens. I'd still take him over Ryan Ellis, and Mathias Ekholm, any day. The league has enough Erik Karlssons and Quinn Hughes. Great offensively, but defensively..a liability.
@@notdylancolley No bias, im a ducksfan, and my favorite player is Bergeron. Crosby is the best overall player in the league (Actively) and Mcdavid is the best offensively, the league has seen since Gretzky/Lemieux.
@@darrellmackinnon1667 Yeah Bergeron has always had my respect. Crosby is definitely big overall, and yes McDavid with no doubt takes the offensive side of things.
This seems like a hide for "I really wanted to talk about the messed up af messier days".... And I applaud you. And the other guy was from my hometown (Niedermayer) so that was cool as well. This video was great 👍
Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe Scott Niedermayer retired after the ducks won to Stanley cup and then decided to come back. That's why Pronger had the C the owing season.
Weber was never worse than Subban. You can’t just look at points for a defenseman and even then Subban averaged like 5-10 points more early on. Weber was always the better defensive defenseman. The main job of a DEFENSEman. Both have had great careers in their own right though.
Being from MTL, I wasn't one that burned his shirt when Subban got traded. Don't get me wrong. He gave 10 million$ to the children's hospital when he signed big and he still honored his commitment after he was traded. He wasn't a bad man. MTL is a traditional team. I would go as far as a conservative team. Guy Lafleur was retired because he talked too much (Came back 5 years later with the Rangers). It just wasn't a great fit. You also have to remember that The Bell center has been sold out for the last 20 years so, we don't rely on a player to fill the seats. Weber is the perfect example of a MTL player. A quiet force. follows the party line. Represents the team before he represents himself. I have never read an article in the newspaper about him that wasn't related to the team.
@@iix23 I loved Subban. He’s flashy, he was a star. But he was a cancer in the room and it’s not really his fault. It’s just his personality is too big for a lot of people especially when they’re teammates and together almost all the time. I’m sure when they had losing seasons they didn’t want to hear Subban giving them shit and making a joke out of everything instead of taking things seriously.
The leafs made the worst trades ever . Two first round draft picks . To New Jersey (Scott Niedermayer) for Tom Kurvers . To the NY Islanders (Roberto Luongo) for Wendal Clark & Matthew Schneider.
In the Weber situation it’s just that he got traded and someone on the Canadians already had the captain said they would’ve made him captain in the moment that the player who had it at the time Pacioretty was gone
You should do a video of teams that have had the most draft picks in the first round through their entire NHL history to teams that haven't. Or all draft picks not just the first round, unless you wanted to make more videos on it. Or even which team had the most draft picks in one draft season vs which team had the least.

You forgot one fact about Shea Weber. Him + puck at the point + clear shot = Goalie crapping their pants
Defenders and his own players too!
Weber's shot: "Blood for the Blood God"
Being inside the Niedermayer family, Scott did not miss most of the regular season because of any injury. He was seriously considering retirement.
It's amazing how much a little research would improve videos like these.
You'll often get flack if you're not Corporate's designates leader, but everyone else looks to you as a leader.
The bangers just keep rolling out. Great video!
And now Weber has captained them to the finals!!!
Hey RTH, how about a video about 1 season wonders (Part 2)?
Yeah, as a Canucks fan growing up, I remember the Mess that Messier made. My dad never liked him, even in his Oilers days. Always said he was a dirty player. Then he comes in and guts the Canucks? He is not liked in the West household.
Jack Eichel
Jacque Eicelle
For Niedermayer be careful because Chris Pronger was joining the Ducks right after having been traded to edmonton and lost in the 2006 scf
Dustin Brown losing his C to Anze Kopitar? I'm surprised that didn't merit mention.
Couldn't wait forever and Pronger was a leader anyway so it was pretty much a no-brainer out of necessity and not so much a stripping.
best hockey channel ive seen in a long time 👍
We all remember when Scott Niedermayer won the Vezina.
To be fair, Pronger is an incredible leader. Look what he did in one season with the Oilers
the notion that weber was statistically worse than subban at the time of the trade is blatantly and objectively false, in a one for one weber even as the older player had more trade value. goals and assists are cool but theyre defensemen and weber is twice as good as subban defensively, no amount of points will offset that
Not my team but the most controversial captaincy stripping has got to be that of Patrick Marleau to Joe Thornton in the Sharks. That divided the Sharks' fanbase into two bases and they would never be brought together until the last couple of years.
This video is amazing. Can't wait till you 100k
Captain Serious Jonny Toews. He's the sole reason why I fell in love with the Hawks
On the topic of captains, could you maybe do a video on the revolving door of captains that happened in San Jose with Thornton, Pavelski, and Marleau?
No Dustin Brown? Something happened in LA.
I love your channel! You should do a video of what draft class you think would win in a playoffs against eachother from 2000-2010
Mine is Mark Stone because he is the only,a video idea is worst suspensions or non suspensions ever and keep up the great vids!!
Always great content. Keep sending it. Appreciate 👍
Appreciate ya
You should do a video on the dirtiest players and add up how many games they missed from suspension and how much money was fined from them throughout their careers.
I’m confused.
Did you say Scott Neidermeyer won a Vezina?
Not possible 😂
Pavelski is a solid 1
Also, I can't get behind the Shea Weber comments in the video.
Couldn't agree with you more.
@@notdylancolley oof, comment unliked, my feelings
I was referring to the time of the trade, not today haha!
This seems like a hide for "I really wanted to talk about the messed up af messier days"....
And I applaud you.
And the other guy was from my hometown (Niedermayer) so that was cool as well.
This video was great 👍
Maybe with a new coach the NY Rangers will actually name a captain.
Idk, gallant didn't name a captain in vgk. It might take a while. I think Panarin might get it. What do you think?
@@susiesanchez6405 Mika carried the team before Panarin got there. He deserves it. I think he's already acting a captain anyway.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe Scott Niedermayer retired after the ducks won to Stanley cup and then decided to come back. That's why Pronger had the C the owing season.
Underrated superstars video, martin st louis and vincent lecavalier in tampa for example.
A video about crazy NHL facts that some have never heard of would be pretty cool
I love watching your videos, keep it up
Not true bout scotty niedermayer. He didnt know if he still wanted to play
Switching the C from Neidermyer while he was out indefinitely was probably the right thing, so was giving it back to him.
I know I'm late here. Didn't Messier demand that he get number 11 despite it being retired by the Canucks?
You should make a video about players who got better after a injury (ex: Gallagher)
A video on, why the Toronto maple leafs fail. A timelime from when they lost in conforence finals all the way to this last season
Roberto Luongo is the Brienne of NHL. Women can’t be knights and goalies can’t be captains, ‘cause of tradition.
Can you do a why were 34 players drafted before Sebastian aho
It’s pretty simple actually. He’s just not good at hockey
Because my team drafts elite hall of fame forwards like Zach senyshyn and Jake DeBrusk
Im a hardcore preds fan and my dads a hardcore Montreal fan. I still complain to him about that trade. PK deserves to be signed by ESPN
You should do a video of teams that have had the most draft picks in the first round through their entire NHL history to teams that haven't. Or all draft picks not just the first round, unless you wanted to make more videos on it. Or even which team had the most draft picks in one draft season vs which team had the least.
Forgot Dustin Brown
