In whole NHL history, nah, not a chance. You've got the 70s Montreal Canadiens, the 80s New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers, the 90s Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings. This Tampa Bay Lightning team/core group reached 4 finals and won 2, which is awesome and indeed a great dynasty. Just not the greatest, nope.

He didn’t resign with the Wild and now is with Vancouver. We did get a 56 compensatory pick this year, grabbing Lorenz a wing, so we gave away the 18th overall pick for a 56…..
Blake Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in 2004. The Winnipeg Jets weren't even in the league at that time. The team was still called the Atlanta Thrashers
Yegor Chinakhov was a recent off the board pick. The guy was a 2nd year eligible player who had analysts literally saying "I don't know who this is" and not having any video, and he slept through his own selection because he didn't think he'd be taken so high. But then he won the KHL Rookie of the Year as a top goal scorer for the champion Avangard Omsk. Had his shooting ability compared to Joe Sakic by the Avalanche's former head coach. And Scott Wheeler named him as a Top 5 draft grade revision, switching his projection from non-NHLer to 2nd line sniper.
As for Bautin, he was one of those Russian players who fell through the cracks. Outside of the top tier Russians like Bure, Mogilny and Federov there wasnt much scouting done for Russians in their pro leagues and a lot of teams got their first (and usually only) looks at Russian players at international competition. Bautin was one of the starters on the Russian team that won the Gold in 92. He was a big, solid and strong defender with some really intriguing offensive skills for a stay at home defender. He would never be a star but if he was paired with Phil Housley the idea was that his game would allow Housley to do his thing on the offensive end because Bautin would have his back. What I remember about Bautin was how he physically dominated the space around the crease during the 92 Olympics. He effectively gave Eric Lindros the fits when the Russian United team beat Canada as well as allowed his backline partner Sergei Zubov the space to make some great runs in on goal. That Russian team was not as good as other Russian teams but they still wrecked shop and Bautin was a big reason for that. He was 25 and yeah, maybe Winnipeg could have waited until the 4th or 5th round to grab him but the 92 draft was pretty weak and they were definitely worried that another team had watched Bautin as they did during the 92 Olympica. It was a gamble and it didnt pay off. Bautin had a lot of miles on his legs before he hit the NHL and he never quite acclimated to the style of play in North America but I remember thinking at the time that Winnipeg might have just gotten the steal of the draft with Bautin.
Yes, most all the D-men from both Dynamo and CSKA were drafted by, and played in, the NHL. Bautin was solid, if unspectacular, and eventually found Europe more suitable to his game and lifestyle. The other Russian brute they drafted in the 10th round ... Igor Ulanov ... turned out to be a much more versatile and steady NHL pro. Both played solid positional D, however and had no issue banging with the bigger forwards. The NHL got a little Russo-nutzoid in that 1991-1994 era.
I will never ever forget the analysts and fans reaction to The Seider pick...and the criticism and mockery of Yzerman taking him at 6.. And thats after all the great drafts he had with Tampa Bay, turning them into multiple cup winners..Yzerman is very thorough in his assessment of players..No one should ever underestimate his knowledge and work he puts in..15 years from now, when Seider may very well be embarking on the end of a HOF Career, we can look back at his pick at #6 and say...Look who got the last laugh..Just sooo happy Stevie Y came back home where he always belonged!
1:27 The Atlanta Thrashers/Jets drafted Schiefele... Wheeler was drafted by Phoenix, which has no connection to the current Jets team... Wheeler didn't sign with Phoenix, who eventually lost his rights, and he signed with Boston, who then traded him to Atlanta How do you not know that?
It’s no coincidence that Steve Yzerman is so smart with drafting players after playing for, and probably unknowingly, apprenticing under Scotty Bowman for all those years... he picked up on who Scotty would play in any given situation, which wasn’t always apparent. Hey Steve , any chance you’d like to join my Habs as an executive draft consultant? 😂😂
"After assembling the greatest dynasty in NHL history..." Um what? the '76 - '79 Canadiens, '80 - '83 Islanders, '84 - '90 Oilers, '10 - '15 Blackhawks, '51 - '60 Canadians, and a few more teams would like to kindly ask what you are smoking.
Dude, he put Seider in a video about off the board picks. In the video he himself said Seider was ranked 15 or 20. Not exactly off the board. He needs to understand what hyperbole is. "arguably the greatest dynasty in NHL history"!?!?!? Yeah, I would also like to argue that. But hey, the dynasties you mentioned happened over 20 years ago, so do they even count? This dude needs to put down the Red Bulls, or whatever he uses to hype himself up.
1976-1977. The Montreal Canadiens lost only 8 regular season games. No other team has ever accomplished that feat. And there were some very good teams in the league that year.
Who questions Yzerman and his picks, we (wings fans)knew he were picking Sieder. We have amazing scouts, look at Holmstrom, Zettiberg, Datsyk, Konstintinov, Drake, Klima, Federov etc etc. None of them first round. We were the only team to send a scout to see Datsyk in his tiny Russian town.
Calling the Lightning the "arguably greatest dynasty in NHL history" is a total joke. The Islanders won 4 Stanley Cups in a row, and made the finals in the 5th year, for 19 playoff series victories in a row. Montreal also won 4 Cups in a row. Tampa's great, but they're not the greatest dynasty in history.

He was underdeveloped defensively in the DEL. He then focused on his defense while with Rögle BK, making him the juggernaut he is now. He was ranked near #20 on a LOT of boards... I'm so glad that Stevie Y saw what he would become before we did! **EDIT: Correction on SHL club
@@HughHarding46 Yes, that's right. Thanks for correcting that. The Wings have so many players that are playing/have played for Frolünda, it's just habit now. 🤣
@@nicoschneiderfitness2842 As far as what NHL teams look for, he was not fully developed as a defenseman. He needed to learn when to use that elite physicality, and when to hold back a bit. He worked hard on the finer points of his defensive game in the SHL.
First Sergei Buatin was 25 when he started in the NHL. Second, in 1995-96 the farm team of the San Jose Sharks was an IHL team. They didn't have an AHL affiliate.

There were so many hits and misses in the 36 years I spent in the business 1984-2220 including some legendary misses by a number of teams. Great video
Don’t forget Holmstrom was a 10th round pick and Konstantinov was an 11th rounder. Lidstrom was also a mid 3rd round pick. Stevie learned a lot from Holland and Devellano
@@stevenhaas9622 I am aware of that as well, but it goes to show how inept some franchises have been over the years when they often pick someone in the first or second round that fails to pan out. 1:35 No, the *consensus* for Scheifele was that he was a mid-to-late first rounder, not a true second or third rounder. Finding a single dumb scout doesn't mean it the reached that much lmao. Hate when people try to pull this crap. Same goes for Wheeler. He was never ranked by more than maybe one moron as a third round pick lmao. You can go and find (with some effort) this lists published by the NHL and see that he was not considered a third rounder by most scouts lmao. 4:10 No, lmao, again, Boucher was a consensus late-first to at *absolute latest* mid-second. You're now just making shit up lmao. Stop finding *one* list that puts somebody way later than anybody else and think that means "a lot of scouts" had players being draft "80 picks" later. 7:00 "if not late in the first" *goes and checks most lists and sees Seider at almost exactly 16-19 on every single list.* Again, why be this lazy and disingenuous? the weird thing about seider is that he was already a perfect shutdown dman in the german league as an 17 year old. Like even the us scouts didnt question his great matured defensive game, so didnt understand back at the time and still dont why everyone especially the scouts had him so low in the rankings. His coaching team back in mannheim, in the del told him to fully commit to his defensive game, but he still had his high hockey iq, his size, his good skating. Thats a pretty decent first pair d-man.
Probably because they doesnt look at the German hockey league as a top league. So despite Zeider looking great maybe they thought it'd be easier to do well against non NHL caliber players. Clearly Yzerman has a better eye than most for great talent.

I know it's kinda confusing but the IHL wasn't at a lower competitive level than the AHL (at least not in concept) and was an alternative farm league that some NHL teams used instead of the AHL. If memory serves there were also independent teams in the league that were comprised of former NHLers, failed prospects and international players. So IHL=AHL. I wouldn't be surprised if in actual practice one league was significantly more competitive than the other, but both acted as the highest level of minor league hockey. The ECHL would be on the next tier lower
The IHL as a league heavily struggled and had a far lower soft salary cap. This would inevitably cause weaker competition and less pay. Technically it was on the same level as the AHL, but the infrastructure/competition wasn't up to par
Did you refer to Wheeler as a Jets draft pick? You ripped Ottawa pretty hard for Boucher, but aside from a couple tenders and Mailloux there really isn’t that much quality in the 1st round of that draft. I know it’s early, but looks like a draft full of know namers after pick 9.
Tbf, you can rarely go wrong with big right shot defenseman. The only other right shot defenseman was Soderstrom ranked higher but Soderstrom is smaller and Swedish defensemans are usually overrated.
Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, but wouldn’t sign with them. He signed with the Bruins, then got traded to the Thrashers, then carried over to the Jets
Hate to say this the jets are two different organizations. The coyotes were the original jets organization and the Atlanta Thrashers are the organization they are now. Don't think you can compare the two other than name.
Only wierd thing abaut Seider was why Detroit didn't trade down? They could have gotten so much value of that pick+alot of future assets and could even now be in much better position...
He was around 16 by the scouts and analysts but most nhl organizations knew his value was in top 10 and a couple teams right behind detroit were potentially gonna take him
there’s no way you called the lightning the greatest dynasty in nhl history😭😭 they aren’t even a dynasty. If you want to grow your channel you gotta be way less biased dude
I am not remotely a lightning fan, and 2 cups, and 3 finals appearances in a row in the salary cap has never been achieved my guy. Not to mention they are in a way better position then Chicago and the Penguins to make the finals for a fourth time next season
Seider is a REALLY good young defensemen. Something that I don't get is how people are saying that these young guys are bringing a new thing to the NHL...As in, bringing together the old and new. But, players like Letang, prime Subban, EK65 (though he doesn't hit much), Josi, Hedman, Burns, have all been doing this for a while. Some, like Letang, for 15 years.
Look at the entire first round draft (7:04) and tell me how many legitimate NHLers now or in the future do you see. The draft coverage is so over the top. Selecting 18 year olds is a crap shoot.
It generally a bad idea. When you get it right like Scheifele or Seider, you end up with a player who is only a little bit better than other guys available in the top 10. When you get it wrong, which is over half the time, it's a disaster. As you've said, you can always trade down. Back to the example of Scheifele, if you couldn't find someone in the 10-14 spot willing to trade up, then play it safe and draft Sean Couturier or Dougie Hamilton. For the example of Kotkaniemi, the 2 Europeans ranked in the next spots ahead of him were drafted 16th and 50th. They could have taken Brady Tkachuk. Or traded down anywhere from the 4th spot to the 20th and had a zero, ZERO per cent chance Kotkaniemi would be drafted out from under them.
Can you name a weird draft selection?
Nikita Kucherov late 2nd round. He tore the MHL apart as well as the U18. Not sure if he could be considered a "weird draft selection" though

Doing that you will get a minor temporary advantage.
Losing trust and damaging your reputation is the end going forward.
Love the sneaky Golden Eye soundtrack you snuck in there. Great content bud. Keep crushin!
The IHL was absolutely not the “minors of the minors,” it was basically another AAA level minor league that competed with the AHL.
If Yzerman drafts someone, you should trust him... Dude is a genius
You missed fenton taking Fillip Johansson in 2018 in the first round for the Wild. The announcers were baffled and had no information / stats.
Keep up the good work Rob! Beauty of a channel.
I’m suprised you didn’t put yegor chinakhov in this video because I had no idea who he was when he was drafted
I still remember the buzz around Daigle, who was mean to be the next Gretzky.
and people trying to figure out how to say his name. The hype was real though, you are right.
The hype was %100 deserved for Daigle in his draft year, he was just never able to put everything together in the big leagues.
Epic rob, back at it again
I mean with the Winnipeg Jets you were talking about two different franchises
Wheeler didn't sign with Phoenix, who eventually lost his rights, and he signed with Boston, who then traded him to Atlanta
How do you not know that?
why do you have Lucas Raymond clips while talking about Seider? did you not revise this video before posting??
It’s no coincidence that Steve Yzerman is so smart with drafting players after playing for, and probably unknowingly, apprenticing under Scotty Bowman for all those years... he picked up on who Scotty would play in any given situation, which wasn’t always apparent.
Hey Steve , any chance you’d like to join my Habs as an executive draft consultant? 😂😂
People thought he was a bust for years as well, so he probably has some insight into that.
Philippe Paradis was rated as a 3rd round pick that went late in the 1st round in 2009, and was literally dumped several months later.
"After assembling the greatest dynasty in NHL history..."
Um what?
the '76 - '79 Canadiens, '80 - '83 Islanders, '84 - '90 Oilers, '10 - '15 Blackhawks, '51 - '60 Canadians, and a few more teams would like to kindly ask what you are smoking.
And there were some very good teams in the league that year.
excluding the Wings ‘97-‘09 in there lol. Huh?
@@bhs7088 Obviously you can't read lmfao.
AND A FEW MORE TEAMS
Boucher is having a really good year right now for the 67s
Moritz is the future of the NHL
I've been a Red Wings fan since Yzerman and Kocur got drafted, I'm from Kelvington and went to school with his little brother Kory. And if Yzerman says something you need to listen because you'll learn from him...
Loved your last sentence! Lgrw
As Someone who saw every Game of seider in germany I can say its just amazongly wrong to say he had an underwhelming season in the DEL… most of the season he saw 17 years old throwing adults around like little puppys. Only going by his points when he was a rookie defenseman is much more underwhelming.
Still love your videos Rob ❤
He was underdeveloped defensively in the DEL. He then focused on his defense while with Rögle BK, making him the juggernaut he is now. He was ranked near #20 on a LOT of boards... I'm so glad that Stevie Y saw what he would become before we did!
**EDIT: Correction on SHL club
@@VictorValiant24 nah thats wrong. He also played pk.
I would agree if you say he was underdeveloped offensivly. But his defense was fine.
@@VictorValiant24 Rogle BK, not Frolunda.
The scouting report actually scouted him as more of an offensively gifted d-man out of DEL. I'm not saying he couldn't play D, just that his game was less suited for the NA game. He worked hard on the finer points of his defensive game in the SHL.
First Sergei Buatin was 25 when he started in the NHL. Second, in 1995-96 the farm team of the San Jose Sharks was an IHL team. They didn't have an AHL affiliate.
I like your videos but the 2019 lightning being arguably the greatest dynasty NHL history? They're definitely dominant but I'm not sure the title of best group ever can be given to them.
They’re not there yet, but 3 finals, 2 cups in 3 years, with a roster that is likely to be there next year is extremely impressive. Specifically in the salary cap era
Perhaps you could have gone into the wayback machine and pointed out that Detroit drafted Datsyuk and Zetterberg in the 6th and 7th rounds, and the rest of the league was left with egg on their faces on that one. There were so many hits and misses in the 36 years I spent in the business 1984-2220 including some legendary misses by a number of teams. Great video
Wow you had a amazing career, 200+ years. Makes the rest of us look like lazy sloths.
The Red Wings had a great run of success from the mid eighties until about 2010 with a few early runs in the playoffs prior to having their great run in the finals over an extended period.
Love the videos !
Usually hate people with this type of channel set up but, you really know your hockey and I enjoy listening to your takes
Pad the numbers?
So, that's literally only 1 player that you didn't misled or actively lie about, and it's one that you literally only had to list the age of the player at the draft to see why it was an insane off-the-board reach. This video is lazy garbage.
Whenever I make these videos I reference large respectable scouting agencies, and yes I look at their lower rankings. I never claim that every team and agency has them in certain spot
@@RobTalksHockey You literally make claims like “where a lot of scouts have them”. I literally went back and looked, which is why I knew you were wrong, because I’ve heard these half-assed claims for years from people who don’t research them. Like, yes, they were all reaches, but claiming Scheifele and Wheeler were listed in the late 2nd or 3rd is insane bullshit buddy lmao.
Just like your video titles, you’re sensationalizing and lying for views. Finding a single scout that says something way out in left-field a la Craig Button doesn’t make a misleading claim less misleading.
Find me all these scouts that listed Wheeler, Scheifele AND Boucher in the 3rd round, which is what YOU said in your video lmao. Just say you’re exaggerating. People that actually do the research know the difference, meaning you’re either not researching, or you’re deliberately stretching the truth to make these reaches sound crazier then they ever were thought to be lmao
Dude you kept showing Raymond clips for Seider
Should have shown clips from that game against Philidelphia.
Watched Tyler Boucher a couple times, not the biggest point producer but does the kid have some skill, once he puts it all together he’s going to be Lethal wherever he plays
the weird thing about seider is that he was already a perfect shutdown dman in the german league as an 17 year old.
@Lesevesel absolutely they deserve the most credit for the seider pick
Why so many Raymond clips during Seider portion?
Hey rob, a cool video idea would be looking back at the 7 KHL drafts that there were. I wont get into too many things but just as a hint, in the inaugural KHL draft, the teams picking at 5 and 7 just simply didn’t make picks. Just a fun little suggestion, think it would be an interesting video
Moritz Seider is my favorite player in the NHL. Yes, he’s the best defenseman I’ve seen in many, many years! Why? Because like the commentator said: He’s a mixture of the modern player and the old school player! It’s nice to see a good player like Moritz playing the game, the way it’s supposed to be played! I’m rooting for him but not when he’s playing my NY Islanders. Lol, Actually, I root for the Red Wings and The Avalanche too, believe it our not! Not because they have the 2 best defenseman in the entire league (though that does help) it’s because of nostalgia. There wasn’t a better rivalry in sports than the Red wings & Avalanche back in the 90s, it was awesome!
Thats when the Avalanche was basically still a Quebec City Nordiques Team, right?
@@germaniatv1870 I’m thinking maybe… 2 years after they left Quebec? Don’t quote me on that. I’m sure you can look it up (like anything else) online. I really didn’t follow hockey until a friend talked me into playing. Once you play hockey, you can’t get enough. P.s. After our team’s roller hockey game. There was a deck hockey game without skates on. The needed an extra player so offered to play. I played about 1/2 of the game & said the Hell with this, we to much running around! I only played hockey without skates for a 1/2 game once in my entire life!
Sergei Bautin was one of my youth hockey coaches and he was the best coach of my entire life by far.
There’s going to be more than a few Bruins in here aren’t there.
How is a guy drafted one year ago a bust?
He sucks, that's how.
Usually the picks go to other teams for Avs, but I do like some they poached under the radar. MacKinnon, Makar, etc.
Hats off to yzerman, the man has done an amazing job in Tampa but greatest dynasty of all time.... sometimes you say some stuff that really makes me question your judgement.
tyler boucher might end up like jason robertson people said he was not good enough for the nhl but now he a superstar
When you went to Yzerman I was confused b/c everything he touches turns to platinum gold lol
you should make a video about the most recent U15 Prep CSSHL season
Seider 🇩🇪🤍❤️
Greetings from Germany 🤗
"I don't know what's in the water in winnipeg" .. well it varies day to day
speaking of weird selections, is that the 007 theme I hear in the background LOL
This kind of made me think of how the Jets picked Rutger McGroarty 14th overall when he was ranked in the late 20s. Hope he turns out good!
Winnipeg 2.0 is Atlanta, no link with Phoenix. Wheeler was drafted by the coyotes to finally play in Boston.
First round doesn't always mean superstar, Alexander Daigle ring any bells? Pat Falloon?
we need a draft steal video next!
zetterberg, 210th
'' this is where SHIT would POP off!'' lmao i had to sub after that
I knew Seider was going to be a good player. Seen a video and heard his name once and I felt he was going to be a star.
Sure Jim
Tbf, you can rarely go wrong with big right shot defenseman. The only other right shot defenseman was Soderstrom ranked higher but Soderstrom is smaller and Swedish defensemans are usually overrated.
Kyle turris was a surprise pick by the coyotes - Gretzky who was the coach at the time compared himself to Kyle. Didn’t pan out.
Winnipeg/Atlanta did not select Blake Wheeler, that was Phoenix.
0:19 *were drafted... not "was"
“Drafting and developing prospects leads to better contract”
Toronto maple leafs: are you sure about that?
Wheeler was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes, but wouldn’t sign with them. He signed with the Bruins, then got traded to the Thrashers, then carried over to the Jets
I guess he was half right considering that the Coyotes started out as the original Winnipeg Jets.
@@chengliu872 yeah, kinda funny that it's all one big loop
Hate to say this the jets are two different organizations. The coyotes were the original jets organization and the Atlanta Thrashers are the organization they are now. Don't think you can compare the two other than name.
Only wierd thing abaut Seider was why Detroit didn't trade down? They could have gotten so much value of that pick+alot of future assets and could even now be in much better position...
Stevie knew that Ken also wanted Seider - and Edmonton was just two picks behind.
He was around 16 by the scouts and analysts but most nhl organizations knew his value was in top 10 and a couple teams right behind detroit were potentially gonna take him
IDK about Seider on this list, he wasn't off the board, I saw multiple mocks have him in the top 10 in 19. But whatever fits the narritave.
Nice job on the clip of Raymond and Larkin where Seider is nowhere to be found. With that kind of quality editing you should work for ESPN.
I was referencing a Raymond/Seider video. Chill man lmao
there’s no way you called the lightning the greatest dynasty in nhl history😭😭 they aren’t even a dynasty. If you want to grow your channel you gotta be way less biased dude
and half you seider highlights were lucas raymond you legit know nothing lmfaoooooo
I am not remotely a lightning fan, and 2 cups, and 3 finals appearances in a row in the salary cap has never been achieved my guy. Not to mention they are in a way better position then Chicago and the Penguins to make the finals for a fourth time next season
Ah yes, half. Great counting!
Boucher will be a dominant 3rd liner and foundation piece for Ottawa in the coming years for Ottawa.
The Ottawa 67's have killer uniforms. I mean the dark ones. The white ones are just OK.
Tyler has been reported to be one of the best at sens camp this summer, so mayb he just needed some time, I hope
Let’s be clear- fans had their own opinions but the media was VERY unkind about the Seider pick at the time. Heavily criticized
A fellow Red Wing fan once told me that Makar wasn't that good....
I learned from that...
Wheeler was drafted by the Coyotes. We got him at age 25 from the Bruins.
Yegor chinakhov that was a off board pick and has worked out pretty well for the jackets
How do you not mention Yegor Chinakhov
Lucas Raymond highlights when he’s talking about seider lol
I like the Snyder story. The Y-zer plan was right about him. Let’s hope he can keep it going.
