    I have to say, I watched you for hours and was totally impressed!! Also, thanks to you, we now have a TON of crab bait for the beach this weekend!! It’s our girls’ first time out on the ocean fishing and the huge bag of fish made our day!
    Your setup was killer, “you’re killing’ it!” was my understatement of the year.
    Watching you not have to drop an anchor / not have to move the kayak once was quite impressive.
    Thank you again and good luck on your adventures!!!

    Ever thought of doing some videos on panfish (perch, crappie) in spring and summer months? How to locate them, etc.
    I’d love to hear your knowledge. Tons of content out there but it all seems to be in other parts of the country and may or may not be relevant here.
    Awesome content keep it up!

    East coast anglers use a Rapala Shad Rap as a diver. They remove the back hook and tie a leader on. I just read that the tribes netted Shad in Lake Washington. In two years I won't have to make a trip south to catch them.

      The boat next to me that had almost no fish was using divers.

    The plain grub is a killer in that area, just casting from the bank it kills fish, but the dodger looks like a fun way to fish too!

    The benefits the spot lock offers are pretty awesome. Especially with rope anchoring being inherently more dangerous on a kayak. I might have to start thinking of ways to outfit my Sportsman 120 PDL with the Minn Kota.

    Thanks man. I was interested in anchoring up on some of those lanes and wondering if it was kayak appropriate. I can see it now!
    Consider anchor fishing for “anything else” in that spot?? Wink wink.

    Wow, what fanatastic action you had. My Mom gave me a National Geographic Society book when I was thirteen for Xmas called the Wondrous World of Fishes. It seems that back in1965 American Shad was a very popular food fish on the East Coast. There is a short article about how to properly fillet a shad. It appears that they zipper the fillet similar to zippering walleyes to remove most of the bone. I can photo the article and send it to you if you like. I love pickled Herring. I wonder what shad taste like pickled. After all, they are a herring.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому

      I've never had shad picked but I like pickled herring. No one has tried to develop a commercial fishery on the Columbia for shad so the demand must not be there anymore

      I used to live out there and you could not pay me enough to eat a fish out of the Willamette or Columbia rivers. They have insane amounts of agro chem runoff going into them, especially the Willamette.

    We caught 90 Shad in the same spot in one day about 3 years ago…4ft leader and 4ft dropper..green grub….take a can of tuna open it up and soak your grubs in it…

    Great video! I love all the details you share. I am embarrassed to admit I have never tried shad fishing. Every year I think about it but I just never get around to trying it.
    How long does your battery last when holding position like that? You said current was around 1.x mph. How long could you stay out there (or how many miles can you do on a full charge)? How well does that kayak pedal (if you stay too long)?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому

      I was drawing about 6 amps per hour to spot lock there. I have a 100 Ah battery so would have 15-18 hours of battery at that draw

    Very cool Tyler. Do you think the tide effects the shad bite at all?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому

      It certainly does on the lower Columbia and Multnomah Channel. Less so in the Oregon City area of the Willamette where I was at

    • @NorthwestOpenSeason
      @NorthwestOpenSeason 3 роки тому

      @@spiltmilt yeah we seem to have inconsistent bites in Oregon City at times, but we’re not sure whether it’s a tide thing effecting the current, or just shifting travel lanes. Also, what do you make of the shad numbers being so low going over Bonneville still?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  3 роки тому

      Yeah the Willie seems to have a dip in current mid-day that coincides with a slow bite. I think they are just late on the Columbia. Fishing below Bonneville is insane right now
