      To LIM42.....in response to your comment regarding my writing, I have such an emotional tie with this breed. I will say this, observing Chaskat the breeder in these videos, I am provoked to adore this litter immensely. Writing is a channel of expression and I use it often especially during this pandemic. In the past I wrote a few children's books about a little girl and her adoration for her dog. My stories were loved by so many children, especially those who sought shelter in women's centers in and around their communities. It's such an outlet to express feelings and keep in touch with oneself. I was an owner of a Cavalier named Gentry. He was a most intelligent and loving creature during his life. He passed away in September 2020. I was beside myself with such feelings of grief. I will always miss the opportunity to show him how much he meant to me. My shadow has faded as he no longer follows every footstep I take. But I shall always turn and look for the faded memory of my little friend every day. I hope you find a pet that will adore you and receive your kindness. Thank you for your comment. Be safe and well. A cavalier is my best idea if you are searching for a companion. You won't be disappointed.

    I can’t believe they’re already going to their new homes. It’s been a pleasure watching your videos. My husband & I live in a condo in which pets are not permitted. We’re looking for either a house or a villa condo that allows pets. As soon as we find it, we’re getting a Cavalier. I can’t wait! I’ve had some health problems that forced me to stop working at a relatively young age, so I’ve got nothing but time and love to give a sweet little Cavalier puppy! I’m going to devote my whole day to making sure he/she is happy and healthy, and when my husband gets home, he’ll be devoting time and love to our sweet puppy along with me!

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому +3

      I usually use substitution. When we are down to just one of these puppies (we're keeping Jamba), I will keep a chew toy on hand. When he starts to bite my finger, I will gently slip the chew toy in its place, and praise him. Positive reinforcement always works better than punishment.

    I have really loved watching your videos of the puppies. I notice you don’t have the adults groomed. Can I ask why. We have a 2 year old black and tan called Sam and have had a Blenheim and a tri before that. Love and loved them all.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      We do almost all the grooming ourselves, because groomers don't generally know how to prepare a Cavalier properly for show. With the dogs we have, we can generally give them a thorough bath and combout about once a month, with brushing about once a week as needed. Right now, most of the adults (especially the mother of these puppies) are a bit more mussed than usual, because the puppies like to play with them and tug at their coats. It's an ongoing chore.

    Also, how do you keep your lawn looking so beautiful with all those dogs? My son’s dog did a lot of damage to mine

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      We made a major investment about 10 years ago, and put in a good quality artificial turf lawn in our back yard where the dogs go. It has proved to be a very worthwhile improvement for us. Previously, we could never grow a nice looking grass lawn because of all the dog traffic, and the drainage was poor. This lawn has excellent drainage, always looks perfect, and makes it extremely easy for picking up poop.

    They are getting so big now. You will surely miss them when they go to their new homes. They have all had a great start in life. How many Cavvies do you actually have?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      We have 3 regular full-time adult girls with us (Boo, Tag, and Bootsie), plus a 13-year-old boy (Bracer) whom we bred and whose owners passed away last year. We took him back to live out his remaining time - being a breeder is a lifetime commitment. Our granddaughter is living with us while she's in college near us, so her girl Lizzie is here now. The rest live with our daughter, who has been living in Florida but is moving to New York near us this summer. Snapchat lives with her, but is staying with us for a potential breeding this spring. The boys (Hubbell, Dylan, and Mulligan) also live with our daughter. And now Jamba is joining the family. Sounds complicated, doesn't it?

  • @ArthurTK26
    @ArthurTK26 3 роки тому

    Hey, I’ve been loving these lot and I’ll miss them so much! Two questions:
    1. Is his name Jemba or Jamba?
    2. Do you mind if I use one of these as my profile pic? They are so cute! :)

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      1. It's Jamba. His registered name is "BlackFire All Night Long" and the call name Jamba comes from a line in the chorus of Lionel Richie's song "All Night Long."
      2. I don't mind if people reproduce pictures of my dogs, but I would not tolerate someone using them to misrepresent themselves as breeders or brokers using pictures of my Cavaliers.

  • @acdragonrider

    They’re so cute! How much are cavs typically?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому +1

      It varies by region and country. Where I am in the Northeast region of the US, the cost of breeding is very high, and that has driven the price of puppies up quite a bit. Reputable breeders in this area are selling puppies for anywhere between $4000 and $7000. You can get one in a pet shop or a puppy mill for a lot less, but it's not likely to live a full and healthy life, and you might wind up spending even more with vet bills. And that doesn't even begin to address the heartache.

    I wish I could get my 12 week old not to pee in crate. We had him from 10 weeks.Even if he is in there a half an hour after going outside. He does sleep through the night. And goes potty everytime he goes outside about 10 times a day. Do you have any suggestions. We use potty pads in the crate. Should we put bedding on top of it?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому +1

      There's a slight possibility he could have a Urinary Tract Infection, which would cause frequent peeing. It's much more common with females, but it's possible. Drop off a urine sample with your vet.
      We don't put any bedding in the crate with young puppies, because that just gives them a place to pee without disrupting their own comfort. Certainly wee-wee pads don't belong there, and we don't even recommend them at any time in any place - it only teaches them that it's OK to pee inside the house. Put him in a bare crate until he's older and more trustworthy.

  • @rabbitholegirl1

    As a soon to be dog owner how long am i to be expected to take the puppy outside during the night?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому

      If you start crate training at 10 weeks old, they usually sleep through the night by about 12 weeks. You may still have to get up early, though - their bladders are not very big at that age. Watch my video on crate training: ua-cam.com/video/CdWR275LHio/v-deo.html

    What puppy food do you recommend for cavaliers?

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      I use Royal Canin dry puppy food, and serve it by covering it with warm water and letting it soak for a few minutes. As long as you use a quality brand (not the stuff you find in supermarkets), you will do fine. In the past, I have used Fromm, Merrick, Blue Buffalo, and some other good brands. Don't use grain free!

    I'm expecting to pick up a Male 9 week but he's pretty fat. Much fatter than his littermates(all female)....do you think that's a concern? Breeder said he's a fat healthy puppy (6.2 lbs at 9 weeks)

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  Рік тому +1

      In a young puppy of this tender age, fat is better than skinny, and 6 pounds is not all that much out of line. I usually expect my 9-10 week old puppies to be around 5 pounds. Just watch his diet carefully when he gets to be 7 months to a year old. That's when his dietary needs will change drastically, and you will have to cut down his food intake to make sure he doesn't get overweight as an adult. Excess weight on a fully grown adult puts stress on the heart, and can be dangerous. At this age, plump is OK.

    So I tried here in South Africa to get my wife a puppy for her birthday today. And almost got scammed by an online seller who wasn't real. So back to the great search to find a breeder and get a puppy to surprise my wife with.

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      It's pretty much impossible to surprise someone with a Cavalier puppy as a gift. It's a lengthy process finding a reputable breeder, getting on their waiting list, and waiting for the puppies to get to the proper age to take home. It's a lovely thought to try to get one for an occasion, but you will do better to make it a long-term family project.

    • @gambit6435
      @gambit6435 3 роки тому

      @@chaskat35 Thank you for the reply, you are right, think just telling her she can have one will be a surprise enough because she has been asking for so long, but I always said I would not raise any dog until we have a nice garden and space for them, the time has come.

    Cages are too crowded. They don’t have enough room

    • @chaskat35
      @chaskat35  2 роки тому

      Tell that to my adult dogs, who voluntarily go into crates that have open doors during the day. Sometimes, two of them will squeeze together into a small crate. Remember, dogs' ancestry goes back to pack animals who slept in crowded dens, so it's instinctive for them to cuddle in small spaces. It's only a problem for them if you leave them in crates all the time, which responsible breeders do NOT do.

      @chaskat35  3 роки тому

      Both parents are tested by a cardiologist for heart disease, by an ophthalmologist for eye problems, by our vet for patella luxation, and by OFA for hip dysplasia. These are all common problems for Cavaliers, and there are no DNA tests for them - only physical examinations. The sire and the maternal grandparents were DNA cleared for episodic falling syndrome, and for dry eye/curly coat syndrome.
