What a great song, one of the best I’ve ever heard. I just discovered it. I’m 46 and have been listening to old country and bluegrass most of my life, I don’t know how I ever missed this song.
I have the same reaction. My darling wife died recently, and I paid attention to this song for the first time. What an amazing piece of art! It captures how I feel!
And then there's "My Favorite Picture of You". The night he died, I read the story behind the song, listened to it, and couldn't stop crying for waaaaay longer than I wanted. Thinking of my little brother & me listening to "Old No. 1" when it came out in '75, all the beauty in that LP, all the miles under his wheels, and mine, since then. Let him roll.......
@@schliesthefirst197 As soon as I started reading the comments I too thought of " My favorite picture of you " I refer to a picture taken of my wife of 50 plus years taken in 1970 when I was drafted ,sitting on our front porch of our Brown Stucco house as in the song I wrote " Brown Stucco house" on my youtube site Burlington Bill.

It’ s awesome how these guys and gals can take these old tired, overused words and turn them into poetry full of imagery and beauty...Prine, Clark, Van Zandt, et al.
Reg bowes Well put. There are only so many words, and they need to rhyme for the most part. And the cats you named did it for years, and these songs will last forever.
Yes, and I admire new ways of saying old things. Instead of just “I love you” he says that he doesn’t want to know her mornings would never be his. That is poetry to me and magic and expresses a common feeling uniquely. What a beautiful song. It floods with feeling. I once read a poem about Confederate women and two lines have never left me: “You fair and tender ladies all alone, The sheets so cold, the nights so long.” There, that evokes deep feelings, like this song.
What a precious gift, what a lyricist, what lasting melodies, what a life, what a love, two people one soul, and the great ones that passed through their door, and filtered their art through their experiences together. Guy and Suzanne AND Townes. She said that Guy was her loving husband and Townes was her soulmate. There is a great documentary that JUST came out about the relationship between Guy, Suzanne and Townes.
It's now 2022, and there's not much to beat 'Guy Clark' and his meaningful songs. People forget what a marvelous Instrument maker he was too.... Sadly missed!!!

Marvin Green I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my husband of 38 years October 10, 2017. Every relationship is to personal to say I know how you feel cause I did not live your life, mine was wonderful, I had. A wonderful man that loves me and I am so very lucky to have had him at all. I miss him every day, but I learn to cope. I know he is in Heaven and I will see him again. I wish you peace.
Hello Marvin, so very sorry for the loss of your wife! Not been through that, and can only hope I go first! Diane and I have discussed the eventuality of losing each other. After 35 years together you tend to think alike. We both spoke to the fact that life is for living, and the one left behind should go on and live the fullest life they can, cause no one gets out alive. Live and remember all the good times!! Will never be mine
And I'd rather die young
Than to live without you
I'd rather go hungry
Than to eat lonesome stew
You know its once in a lifetime
And it won't come again
Its here and its gone
On a Magnolia wind
I'd rather not walk
Through the garden again
If I can't catch your scent
If it ever comes to time
That it comes time to go
Pack your fiddle
Sis' pack up your bow
If I can't dance with you
Then I won't dance at all
I'll just sit this this one out
With my back to the wall
And I'd rather not hear
