Five years after the legendary Texas singer and songwriter Guy Clark passed away, his life and legacy is celebrated in a new documentary. Without Getting Killed or Caught brings Guy's colourful life and career to the big screen. The film is the brainchild of Grammy award-winning music producer, award-winning author, and documentary filmmaker Tamara Saviano. She and her partner in life Paul Whitfield are the co-directors and co-producers.
The film looks at Guy Clark’s life as he struggles to write poetic songs, while balancing a complicated marriage with his wife Susanna. It is also a story of Guy's friendship with another legendary Texas singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt, on whom Susanna forged a passionate dependence. Tamara and Paul talk about what led them to make the documentary, how they gained access to Susanna’s diary and audio tapes, and which other films inspired them the most in their filmmaking.
“They are so good at what they do, yet they remain so grounded and humble, and that attracts people to them.” - Tamara Saviano

"Ahh, the knife was made for darker things. You could not bend the rules. "
"and there it slept, and there it stayed, for twenty some odd years.
Sort of like Excalibur, except waiting for a tear".
    The Randall Knife.
    "How dark is it ?
    Too dark for goblins.
    How dark is it ?
So dark so can smell the moon
    How dark is it ?
So dark, even the wind gets lost".

Couple of favorite lines although I love them all; "and when you feel like running for the back door, don't, just you wait until the morning when you wake up with me at your side & find I didnt lie bout nothin, and i wouldnt trade a tree for the way i feel about about ya anyhow I love you. Chills, just like "my name was on the case". One of my favorite artists of all time. Got to meet my hero one time sat alone with him for a short time and a couple of questions but mostly precious silence out of respect. I actually felt like him myself and that old guitar that would never stay in tune were all three alone in that dark and empty room lit up my soul that night. Wouldn't trade it for a tree !!! Ohh, chills all over ! Cheers all fellow Mr. Guy Clark fans. Oh and btw haven't seen it yet want to but.... Probably been better in his house if he didn't care I damn sure wouldn't, like the man said "I'm just Guy Clark"

I love that Guy said he wasn't a country singer. He didn't need or want the label. It makes me think of an artist I truly love who won Artist of the Year at the Americana Music Awards. When presented with the award, he chose to inform them that he wasn't an Americana artist, he was a country artist.
Guy did it right. Take the praise and let everyone else decide for themselves.

@@zelmo999 I can see how Covid delayed the SXSW premier but how did Covid affect the public world-wide distribution? There hasn't been "slowed distribution" there's been no general public distribution whatsoever. Covid isn't the reason for that. The doc has been completed for a few years now. And it's a digital world. The reason is financial. Tamara is holding out for a better deal than she's been offered so far. But she shouldn't hold out too long b/c Guy's hardcore fans aren't getting any younger and it'd be an awful shame if they don't get to see this.

If you go to the movies how much do you generally spend? I know the cost of a ticket is around $10. Once you add the price of popcorn and drink to that it's around $20. I imagine if Tamara could lower the cost she would. I suspect the reason it's $20 is so she and her husband can help to recoup what it cost to make the movie. The reason it's not out on DVD or streaming platforms is because the cost of doing so is too exorbitant.

Not I and I spend money making music, making guitars and making other musicians mad and speaking of landlords...they're the worst people in the world. And the 60 year old cow still being milked by an industry “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs." a quote I forgot to add to my Ballad of Hunter Thompson which was noticed only after he checked out. Tamara was ordained by Guy himself and spent A LOT of time with him the last two or three years of his life and you sound a little pretentious yourself with your dissatisfied proclamation.

The guy doing the interviewer is pretty clueless… you can tell he wants to know what he’s talking about and wants to “get” Guy and Townes and their music… but he seems like he’d be more comfortable interviewing someone for a Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean documentary. Definitely A for effort though…. “Was Guy Clark part of the outlaw movement?”…..🙄 Cringe….

The Bruce Can't Singsteen connection makes me not wanna watch it. Wealthy New Englanders pretending to be "folksy"
