This song was the first single that Van Halen released with Sammy Hagar as their lead vocalist
Bringing Sammy in as lead vocalist added a new element to Van Halen's music considering that Sammy is a guitarist himself, which he played guitar on the song "Love Comes Walking In" while Eddie played the keyboards on the same track

    • @jonbaggett2773

One of the other things Sammy brought was it allowed Eddie and Michael to tune to standard A tuning. They always tuned down half a step with DLR but with Sammy they could bring it back up. That is why Van Hagar sounds a bit brighter, they are up a half step. Sorry for the guitar nerd comment! HAHA!

The largest selling Roth Era album was 1984 with 17 million, the largest Hagar era album was 5150 at 11 million. Currently Spotify lists the top 10 streamed Van Halen tracks as having 8 Roth era, and 2 Hagar era songs. Any way you slice it....Roth era sold more, and STILL sells more. Much more. Did the Hagar era have more top ten hits? Yes, but you have to remember they occurred in the mid/late eighties when many "one hit wonders" also had top 10 hits....which does not equate to more album sales.

That's definitely a synthesizer which is actually played by Eddie Van Halen who actually played the piano in his early teens way before he played the guitar. The funny thing to me when Sammy Hagar joined Van Halen I think they became more pop like than rock. They have alot more synthesizers in they're songs than the guitar. I like Sammy in his early years and he was a rocker but the two joined together we softer more pop sounding.

The sound you're hearing is a keyboard synthesizer, and Eddie is playing it. The solo in the middle of the song is guitar with a keyboard synth behind it. There are guitar synthesizers (I have one myself, it's a BOSS stomp pedal), but they didn't exist in 1986. This album isn't the first where Eddie played with synthesizer sounds. "One Foot Out the Door" from the Fair Warning album was the first, and they've had at least 1 song with synthesizers on every album since (Dancing in the Street on Diver Down, 1984, Jump, and I'll Wait on 1984, etc.).

Nice bit of trivia for you guys on this one. 5150 (the album) was the first album after Van Halen replaced the original lead singer, David Lee Roth, left the band. "Why Can't This Be Love?" was the first single released with the new lead singer, Sammy Hagar. Yes, this song has the sound of "young love" in the sense of people falling for each other and anticipating or hoping or expecting that it will turn into a lasting relationship. There's also a sense of this new iteration of the band "falling in love" in a musical sense with each other, as Sammy Hagar starts to find his role in this band and as the other musicians (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and Michael Anthony) all get used to him as a part of the band. So I think the song's title can apply both to the "boy meets girl" stages of a new relationship, but it can also apply to the "singer meets band" stages of a new musical relationship.

Brad and Lex, love you guys! My fav reaction couple! I am a brother from NYC who fell in love w/ VH music when I was 14 in the mid 80's and was inspired to play guitar b/c of Eddie. Seen them play 8 times and met Eddie out in public 4 times. I LOVE that you've been digging into VH music, both the David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar eras. I have 4 songs to strongly recommend to do reactions to:
    1) CABO WABO (Eddie's shimmery guitar tone, Sammy's singing, the harmonies, this song is one of my top 3 VH songs ever!
    2) AMSTERDAM -killer guitar riffs, fun song about weed
    3) SOURCE OF INFECTION - Sammy's vocals in this are sick! And Eddie tears it up on guitar.
    4) BIG PHAT MONEY - just pure high energy fun!
Trust me, you will LOVE these VH songs!

Fans often refer to this as the Van Hagar years. They replaced David Lee Roth with Sammy Hagar, and it actually worked, although it completely chained the direction of the band. David Lee Roth was a showman and a quintessential frontman for a rock band. I think Eddie and he clashed a lot because Eddie was really the star. He wrote most of the music and was arguably the World's most talented rock guitarist. He won best rock guitarist an unprecedented 6 or 7 times in a row, and could play like nobody else. I think the Van Hagar years are very underappreciated. The must listen to songs are Dreams, Love Comes Walkin' In, Right Now, Blacks and Blue, Cabo Wabo, Summer Nights, When it's Love, Finish What you Started, & Feels So Good.

Great choice guys! Nice! 👏🏼 “Best of both worlds” and “Love walks in” are other really good tracks from this album..this was the first with Sammy instead of Dave and we were all set to hate it because we loved Dave but then it finally came out and we had no choice it sounded really good so we had to like it..matter of fact I think they ended up with just as many hit songs with Sammy as they did Dave..they did it the right way they replaced Dave with someone who was also talented and entertaining so there wasn’t any real drop off in performance..different style though Eddie’s guitar wasn’t as heavy anymore and he mixed in a lot more synthesizer which gave them a more radio friendly sound..actually “I’ll wait” is a great track on the last album with Dave that’s very synthesizer heavy so that kinda shows the direction they were looking to go in..they did become really commercial though friggin MTV Spring Break and s**t but looking back now no they weren’t hard rock anymore but they were still very good and great live too I saw them a bunch of times..channel sounds great as always guy’s thank you!👍🏼

Eddie and his brother Alex grew up studying classical piano. This was Eddie on synth. When they did this song live Eddie was on synth and Sammy Hagar played guitar. I saw this tour live in Rockford, Illinois in '86. This was the "Live Without a Net" tour. It was also the tour when Ed did his infamous Eruption video that everyone reacts to. It was my first hard rock concert and I still can't believe I witnessed Eddie at his peak!

That sound is a guitar loaded with effects. Not exactly sure of what effects he's using but it sounds like a 'phase distortion' or a 'cry-baby' with a 'chorus' and 'phase' or 'flanger'. Hard to tell - there are so many effects available out there. Guitarists spend lots of time on their sound - mixing effects and such to get exactly the effect they want.

Sammy is amazing, Edward, Alex and Michael etc.... That said, IMHO, the very best of Van Hagar is around # 20 or 21 of best Van Halen songs. The first 6 records by VH are the greatest 6 records of any Rock band in history. This version of VH is a terrific Pop band. But that's all. The early version could do pop, country, swing, doo-wap, metal, and face ripping riffs with a smile. There will never be another Van Halen 1 through Van Halen 1984 album collection even close. Cheers!

Eddie Van Halen played all the keyboards and guitar on this track (and album '5150')... The last album w/ David Lee Roth on vocals was '1984' and had a #1 single 'Jump' which was keyboard-oriented. But Roth did not like the direction of that record (or likely his lack of musical input), and when he heard the new music Eddie was coming up w/ which included more keyboards, he wasn't enthusiastic about it... Roth's lack of interest and poor live performances culminated in his solo covers EP 'Crazy from the heat' in 1985 - one he hoped would become a movie. At some point, Van Halen either fired Roth... or he bailed.
Sammy Hagar's side of the story was, he got a call from Eddie Van Halen about auditioning for Van Halen... Hagar was thinking about leaving the music business, but decided to check them out. He went to Eddie's studio and Eddie played him the new music... he was immediately inspired to write melodies and lyrics and demoed the songs. When Hagar went home and listened to the demos, he was floored... he said 'yes' to joining Van Halen. Hagar said that Eddie was becoming more interested in playing keyboards on '5150' and was excellent at it... Eddie still put in his trademark guitars w/ effects, but the album was more commercial in direction... very synth-heavy (as was the next album 'OU812' in 1988) ... Unlike Roth, Hagar was much more supportive of Eddie Van Halen's experimentation.
