What you should do is to use 2 or 3 pieces of equipment that you don't have, buy or rent more tools, and do everything differently from the way you're doing it now. You should drive faster or slower, if you're going forwards, you should drive backwards. If you're driving backwards, you should drive forwards. If you're going back and forth, you should be going sideways. As a matter of fact, I'm surprised that you get any work done! If only you would follow the advice of everyone that's sitting in the shade and watching you do the work. On a real note: Chris, you're the hardest working man I know, thanks for letting us watch your journey.
So, I've been watching for about a year man. We went and bought a kx 040 Kubota. I've completed a month long job. Played in dirt as a kid, spoons, butter knives, roads, cars and trucks. Drone footage up close watching you doze up roots and debris, was the best. I'm ready to come to North Carolina for about a week and help you out. Lol
I ran power rakes a lot puting in lawns in new construction and sports fields. Use the angle feature on the rake so that it creates a windrow with the debris and just keep pushing that windrow toward the treeline

Interesting. . . as I could imagine all sorts of uses for Chris right off the bat at the types of jobs he often finds himself doing - 'to just apply that finishing touch' that he is so well known for. And certainly more adaptable than typical farm implements - not to mention load up and take with him for those kinds if jobs it could help with a good deal less effort and transportation necessities.
That works good to get the rocks out and to level things up. But I would disk it to get a better dead bed for the hay and the helps with the weed control and covering all the weeds for the organic material in the soil. And the disk does a nice job of leveling things for the smooth ride over the field.
I agree. He doesn't take all his equipment to the some jobs. Seems like most jobs he does with the trackhoe and a dozer unless it's a big project. A bigger pole barn would be nice to put some of that equipment in when he doesn't use it for months.
In 2020 Squatch253 got just 6 round bales of straw off one of his straw fields. So in 2021 he ploughed the field, disced and harrowed it seeded it. This year he got 33 full round bales off the same acreage. Just plough your field, disc and harrow, that will help with levelling the field off, then seed it and see how you go.
@The Mighty Orange Squatch253 and Chris are referring to hay fields which are different than crop fields. Farmers used to plow their fields every spring for new crops to be planted. That has given way to no-till or minimum till farming for a lot of reasons. Hay fields are really just ginormous lawns that eventually peter out and give reduced yield and therefore need to be tilled up and re-seeded. The only difference between Squatch253 and Chris is how they get to the re-seeding. Grew up in the 70's and my first paying job was for $2 an hour running an old Oliver 60 Row Crop with a disc behind it. The farmer I worked for plowed using a Cat D2 crawler which is the connection to Squatch253.
You will be amazed at how well those power rake work. They also save a TON of time for grade work. Ruff it in with dozer and that power rake will made it beautiful in 1/2 the time then finish grading with dozer
This is an awesome tool. It’s not the tool for first working the soil. This needs cultivating or dishing first. Dishing does a much better job turning the organic matter down further into the soil. Then using the Ruckus Rake, it’s a little bit of slow is fast and fast is slow. Slower will work the soil better and catch a few more rocks and allow you to pile them up in furrows to pick up and pile elsewhere. Our rock picker was a similar (but not) machine and we had an old one that left furrows and the newer one is nice as it caught the rocks for us to haul to the pile. After a few decades of working the land (8800 acres and about 2100 acres in crops, we had small mountains of rocks in the corners of several of the fields. It became worth something when zeriscaping became more prevalent. We had guys offering to buy the rocks when I would have paid them in years prior to haul the rocks away!! Haha. They weren’t worth much and I just had the guys house them away and let them profit. I asked that they haul a few loads of gravel in return!! They owned the gravel pit so they hauled in more gravel than I ever needed!!! Hahaha. Good guys!! It’s all been sold off and I am retired now. I just have my 3 Series John Deere left and I use it on the 2 different acreages I own. Nothing special there!! Haha.
If that unit stays with you I can see you using that on a lot of your jobs. Clearing out house pads of grass, cutting in driveways, and plenty of uses at your new farm!! Cool unit.

We used something along those lines called a Harley rake. We pulled it behind a Kubota tractor for landscaping and putting in lawns. It worked great for wind rowing the rocks and debris. And leveling the ground
You Southern Boys have me jealous. I’d kill for ground like that here in the Northeast. We have more rocks than dirt! That rake wouldn’t last an acre on my farm.
Yeah, I can see Andrew Carmata ruining a rake in New York with all that shale rock. Only thing is Andrew be using his sifter for the dirt and then adding some good topsoil before using the rake.
Daniel Nestorick I was thinking the same thing. What Chris is calling rocks is the size of pea stone for us. Yet this machine works good on Chris's farm.
Great little machine Chris , there is nothing like having a level carpet when you are cutting hay , you clip one of those bigger rocks with your mower it has a tendency to bust a blade or two , I’ve even had the drum warped out of shape because the bloke who owned the land didn’t bother to clean his paddock before he grew his grass it was to be cut for silage rolls , $1800 later we finished his paddock and he learned an expensive lesson clean your paddock before you grow your grass , you have the right gear and the knowledge to keep us entertained for hours thank you from Tasmania Australia 🇦🇺
I’m just wondering why you don’t run a disc over your field first and then use the ruckus rake to level the ground? It seems that you would loosen the ground to where you wouldn’t have to go over it as many times saving you time and wear and tear on your equipment. The ruckus rake will be a great addition to your fleet of available equipment and improving your finish work.
I was wondering the same thing. Sure would save a lot of wear and tear on the rake. I also wondered how long it'll be before he has to replace the drum... those rocks aren't going to play nice with those teeth. That said, it will be a fantastic piece of finish equipment to fluff top soil before seeding and strawing
Or get a decent set of sweeps ie cultivator with a roller in the back . That would a very clean bed to plant your hay or corn . This is a neat tool but only after a stage in field cultivation . Am assuming you trying to get rid of the weeds
Better to till to expose the rootsand mix in the weeds, spray again then till again and then ruckas rake it. The organics will help put nutrients into the soil.
Discing only serves to bring more rock to the surface . That’s why rocky soil is used as pasture and hay the grass roots hold the rock below the surface .
I think I would disc the ground first , a lot faster and more effective. This machine would be ok for knocking out lumps after grading , to finish off a job in fact. Looks like you would need three passes just to make an impact. I thinks this is a finishing implement
Your going to love that power rake,you can angle and wind row the rocks and roots to the side and scrape em up,little seat time you’ll know all the tricks lol 😆👍👍
I agree, I think if he skewed the rake and overlapped passes like raking hay with a 5 bar rake, it would move the rocks into a manageable windrow and leave the dirt behind.
Well now that you have tried the toy, have the farmer that sprayed the field bring over the correct piece of machinery and show you how to do it right, once!
I would get someone with a turning plow and turn the ground over and come back with a disk . It would be faster and then you could come back and level it.
That looks like a good product, you can use it to finish pond banks when you finish one. And everything will be leveled off to plant grass seed.I think you are right about the hi-flow, but sometimes you have to run what you got!
that looks like more of a finish rake after you disk and harrow it. if you do the job with a disk and drag harrow the way it's supposed too be done I really don't see the need for that equipment in a field. I can get a field just as flat and smooth with my disk and drag harrow with one , maybe two passes at the most. been doing it for years in my fields that way for hay, wheat, milo, soybeans, and such with no problems. one problem I see is it just scratches the surface a few inches and not down in the roots and fresh dirt like a chisel or disk plow will leaving you with alot of voluntary growth the next growing season.
That's definitely going to be a nice tool for your arsenal to do finish work and looks to do an amazingjob. I know farmers all across the country farm differently ( till, no till, ect...) here in parts of the Northwest some of us depending on the crop will deep plow then disk with a heavy drag with harrows or a tiller or one tripper after the plowing. Usually plow in the fall then finish till in the spring right before planting, the organics plowed under breakdown and adds nutrients to the soil and helps the growing and makes a deeper bed for the crops to grow.

I am glad you found some time to work on your own farm again if you keep this up and level your field you may be ahead of things for a while. That AMI rake will last much longer at that slower or medium speed.

Chris, being a farmer myself, i know what was sprayed to kill it that fast and I'm not so sure I would want to be that close to the ground in that dust. A closed cab tractor with a 30ft McFarlane Incite would be a good choice to get the results you want.. I know that you are testing and learning the rucus rake but your health is more important to us/me. Keep up the good work.
The smoothing harley rake, smooth lawns forever. Have that farmer disk that field for you first, knock back the roots. By the way there is good money in sod farming.
I have had a landscaper use one of these for the first time and by the end of the day he went slower and pulled it backwards and had it on an angle and all the rocks shot out the end in a row
I use my power rake daily since I’m a landscaper and I’ve definitely learned you get a much faster and smoother finish if the soil is a little damp. If it’s bone dry the powdery soil doesn’t get pushed along as well
Love watching this channel! So fun and relaxing. Great demo! The Iowa farm boy in me says that a field cultivator with rock baskets on it would knock it out fast, and then the rake. The fact is, this is the best way to learn about your product!
Wonder if the machine can have an upgrade to hi flow ? Is it just the pump that needs to change ? You've just created more work coming in, once customer's know you have this ! Well I know you dont need my opinion BUT i believe you should mow it well before you ralke it with the rake and i believe it would do a better and quicker job.

I have found, that you set the rake at an angle and drive slower the speed of the rake kicks the rocks forward and to the right. Lift, reverse, start another row, then the rocks from the previous pass are in front and will be thrown with the rocks in that row. Depending on how much large rocks there are, will determine how many passes to build a rock wind row and starting the next set. Don't know what kind of pasture seed you are planning, but if you decide on putting in some clover, put in red clover vs. white. Main reason, is if sometime in the future, you might want to put horses on the pasture, there is a fungus that can grow on the white clover, which causes the horses to slobber. It's not harmful, but it's like having a slobbering dog, with saliva all over the place and the fungus shows up during the summer months, when the clover is high and with high humidity. The fungus apparently only causes this problem with horses, doesn't seem to effect the cattle. FYI.

Yep. Told you last year that you would serve yourself well by getting a Ruckus Rake, made famous by the star of the small screen, the doctor of dirt, the master of mud, the pharaoh of the go cart flat track, Mister Dirrrrrt Perrrrfect. All kidding aside, the AMI rake appears to be one of the best.
Pretty sure that when you are going forward the tool should be in reverse and when going backwards, the tool should be going forward. Great addition Chris. 👍👍🍺

Interesting attachment, l think if it had a rake of tines ahead of the tires it would push the roots and branches etc out in front to be left at the edge of the field. As for those weeds l would disc them in then use this attachment. If you have a local chicken or turkey farm see if they need some where to spread the droppings. Great free or cheap natural fertilizer that will build the soil by not killing the biome in your soil. Crackin little attachment, as you say with a bigger flow rate l think it would do an amazing job.
That will be just the attachment you will want to finish a yard grade next time you do another building pad. It looks like it works better with slower travel speed. Maybe you need to use that after a rock screen and root rake. I hear Geoff now, " hey, can you run that across my pasture after you finish the pond"?
Nice Ruckas rake Chris. Hmm, I can see a sickle mower and hay bailor plus bail trailer added to Chris's inventory in the future. Just a matter of round or rectangular bails or a mix of both. There's a Ruckas raje that has a 12 inch high hopper behind the rake cylinder that screens out dirt while it catches rocks, roots and other debris you can dump out at the end of runs into an easily picked up pile. I saw it on another channel and the owner said it does a much better job than the ones he's had without the hopper.
That contraption oughta make it as smooth as a golf course fairway and a pleasure to drive on. I know my hayfield is bumpy as a railroad track and I could sure use one of those

After you sow your grass seed you should run a cultipacker or something similar over the field to push all those rocks into the ground if you’re planning to cut hay off of it.
If you could find someone to sprig that field in some type of Bermuda grass you’d get 3-4 hay cuts a year or great grazing, then in fall overseed in rye for the same purpose. That 15 acres could probably produce enough hay/forage for all your animals and some. Fescue is a good option as well just doesn’t like our heat so good in the summer. Winter rye and summer crabgrass is also a great choice. I’m sure whatever you do it will turn out great. If I was just a little closer I’d offer to cut your hay for ya.
I was watching you go forward and as much dirt but it’s growing on top of your tires looks like you need to put a fender or some sort over them to keep the dirt till the wheels keep rolling freely just a suggestion you be safe out there love watching your videos thank you much

I did this one a 53 acre field, granted I have a high flow CTL but it took forever. Well worth it though! It’s the nicest hay field I have but I found a power harrow was better in rocks cause it buries them better.
Sometimes when you spray like roundup or other glysophate and you spray heavy or mix heavy itll kill the green fast but not actually kill the roots...with roundup quick pro and a hot day ive seen weeds die in one day but we also mixed a pre emergent in called sure guard...and that stuff was the spice...with that mix i sprayed a fence line my first year taking care of a site...6 years later it had not grown back...it would only grow back if the ground was broken ( breaking the barrier) or blowing grass clippings on it giving the seeds a place to root or wiregrass to take root from.the clippings..
Looks to be doing a very good job. I've run the Harley Rake before, and think the drum turns at a slower rpm. With rocks and stones and the rake at an angle they do windrow up nicely. Think better than just pushing them in front. Once in windrow, can pick up with a bucket. Angle is better than straight, as I see it. Like a grader, angle is better to level things up. Hopefully the higher rpm doesn't tear things apart.
I use a rake on my Cat 289D its a great tool, I even use it to level out gravel driveway. I would have used my bush hog on those fields before I used rake though. And you tracks seem loose.

I was thinking the exact same thing, then at the beginning of the spring a once over with a field roller once the grass is established..

Finish work to level, or contour, a pre-weeded field. Not to clear field of weeds!

I ran a walk behind Ransomes stone rake for years landscaping, excellent tool for levelling or collecting stones. Congrats on new purchase.

Great purchase. You use what you have - don't always need to have the biggest and best - and it does a pretty good surface clearing.
I would get someone with a turning plow and turn the ground over and come back with a disk . It would be faster and then you could come back and level it.
That looks like a good product, you can use it to finish pond banks when you finish one. And everything will be leveled off to plant grass seed.I think you are right about the hi-flow, but sometimes you have to run what you got!
that looks like more of a finish rake after you disk and harrow it. if you do the job with a disk and drag harrow the way it's supposed too be done I really don't see the need for that equipment in a field. I can get a field just as flat and smooth with my disk and drag harrow with one , maybe two passes at the most. been doing it for years in my fields that way for hay, wheat, milo, soybeans, and such with no problems. one problem I see is it just scratches the surface a few inches and not down in the roots and fresh dirt like a chisel or disk plow will leaving you with alot of voluntary growth the next growing season.
That thing does a really nice job. I'm impressed. Kinda like a tiller and section harrow at the same time.
That's definitely going to be a nice tool for your arsenal to do finish work and looks to do an amazingjob. I know farmers all across the country farm differently ( till, no till, ect...) here in parts of the Northwest some of us depending on the crop will deep plow then disk with a heavy drag with harrows or a tiller or one tripper after the plowing. Usually plow in the fall then finish till in the spring right before planting, the organics plowed under breakdown and adds nutrients to the soil and helps the growing and makes a deeper bed for the crops to grow.

That AMI rake will last much longer at that slower or medium speed.

Chris, being a farmer myself, i know what was sprayed to kill it that fast and I'm not so sure I would want to be that close to the ground in that dust. A closed cab tractor with a 30ft McFarlane Incite would be a good choice to get the results you want.. I know that you are testing and learning the rucus rake but your health is more important to us/me. Keep up the good work.
The smoothing harley rake, smooth lawns forever. Have that farmer disk that field for you first, knock back the roots. By the way there is good money in sod farming.
That'll come in REAL HANDY when you're prepping for sewing grass seed!!! It sure would make a REALLY nice yard!!!
I have had a landscaper use one of these for the first time and by the end of the day he went slower and pulled it backwards and had it on an angle and all the rocks shot out the end in a row
I use my power rake daily since I’m a landscaper and I’ve definitely learned you get a much faster and smoother finish if the soil is a little damp. If it’s bone dry the powdery soil doesn’t get pushed along as well
Great new toy seems to work ok but wouldn't you have been better to till the soil first then raked it smooth

Love watching this channel! So fun and relaxing. Great demo! The Iowa farm boy in me says that a field cultivator with rock baskets on it would knock it out fast, and then the rake. The fact is, this is the best way to learn about your product!

Well I know you dont need my opinion BUT i believe you should mow it well before you ralke it with the rake and i believe it would do a better and quicker job.

I have found, that you set the rake at an angle and drive slower the speed of the rake kicks the rocks forward and to the right. Lift, reverse, start another row, then the rocks from the previous pass are in front and will be thrown with the rocks in that row. Depending on how much large rocks there are, will determine how many passes to build a rock wind row and starting the next set.
Don't know what kind of pasture seed you are planning, but if you decide on putting in some clover, put in red clover vs. white. Main reason, is if sometime in the future, you might want to put horses on the pasture, there is a fungus that can grow on the white clover, which causes the horses to slobber. It's not harmful, but it's like having a slobbering dog, with saliva all over the place and the fungus shows up during the summer months, when the clover is high and with high humidity. The fungus apparently only causes this problem with horses, doesn't seem to effect the cattle. FYI.
I'm thinking there'll be a rock sifter attachment on Chris's wish list - clear up the fields & supply rock for building roads...
Those are great machines. Used to use one for final pass prep on all grading jobs before the landscapers showed up.

Yep. Told you last year that you would serve yourself well by getting a Ruckus Rake, made famous by the star of the small screen, the doctor of dirt, the master of mud, the pharaoh of the go cart flat track, Mister Dirrrrrt Perrrrfect. All kidding aside, the AMI rake appears to be one of the best.

I used a Bobcat power rake that worked awesome for picking up rocks.
Interesting use for this machine ive only ever seen them used to fix gravel driveways/roads
He is probably trying it out on his property first to learn how it works and how to use it so before using it on jobs.

That piece of equipment is a good buy. Saves a lot of time when clearing the field.
Consider "Farmer equipment" for the task. They get amazing results doing these types of task. Sometimes simple can be better?
Interesting attachment, l think if it had a rake of tines ahead of the tires it would push the roots and branches etc out in front to be left at the edge of the field. As for those weeds l would disc them in then use this attachment. If you have a local chicken or turkey farm see if they need some where to spread the droppings. Great free or cheap natural fertilizer that will build the soil by not killing the biome in your soil. Crackin little attachment, as you say with a bigger flow rate l think it would do an amazing job.
That will be just the attachment you will want to finish a yard grade next time you do another building pad. It looks like it works better with slower travel speed. Maybe you need to use that after a rock screen and root rake. I hear Geoff now, " hey, can you run that across my pasture after you finish the pond"?

Hmm, I can see a sickle mower and hay bailor plus bail trailer added to Chris's inventory in the future.
Just a matter of round or rectangular bails or a mix of both.
There's a Ruckas raje that has a 12 inch high hopper behind the rake cylinder that screens out dirt while it catches rocks, roots and other debris you can dump out at the end of runs into an easily picked up pile.
I saw it on another channel and the owner said it does a much better job than the ones he's had without the hopper.
Chris since the rake is going so slow maybe you should slow down to Granny's speed to keep up with it😄

Only guy I’ve seen do tillage with a skid steer. Most just plow and disc it would be a lot faster. The ruckus rake works pretty good though.

You should create a separate video for 10 hours of "the soothing sounds of bells" as played on an AMI Ruckus Rake.
After you sow your grass seed you should run a cultipacker or something similar over the field to push all those rocks into the ground if you’re planning to cut hay off of it.

If you could find someone to sprig that field in some type of Bermuda grass you’d get 3-4 hay cuts a year or great grazing, then in fall overseed in rye for the same purpose. That 15 acres could probably produce enough hay/forage for all your animals and some. Fescue is a good option as well just doesn’t like our heat so good in the summer. Winter rye and summer crabgrass is also a great choice. I’m sure whatever you do it will turn out great. If I was just a little closer I’d offer to cut your hay for ya.

I did this one a 53 acre field, granted I have a high flow CTL but it took forever. Well worth it though! It’s the nicest hay field I have but I found a power harrow was better in rocks cause it buries them better.
Sometimes when you spray like roundup or other glysophate and you spray heavy or mix heavy itll kill the green fast but not actually kill the roots...with roundup quick pro and a hot day ive seen weeds die in one day but we also mixed a pre emergent in called sure guard...and that stuff was the spice...with that mix i sprayed a fence line my first year taking care of a site...6 years later it had not grown back...it would only grow back if the ground was broken ( breaking the barrier) or blowing grass clippings on it giving the seeds a place to root or wiregrass to take root from.the clippings..
Looks to be doing a very good job.
I've run the Harley Rake before, and think the drum turns at a slower rpm. With rocks and stones and the rake at an angle they do windrow up nicely. Think better than just pushing them in front. Once in windrow, can pick up with a bucket. Angle is better than straight, as I see it. Like a grader, angle is better to level things up.
Hopefully the higher rpm doesn't tear things apart.

I use a rake on my Cat 289D its a great tool, I even use it to level out gravel driveway. I would have used my bush hog on those fields before I used rake though. And you tracks seem loose.
Ruckus rake looks like a giant tiller. Really kicks up the dust. If it helps get rid of the weeds then more power to it.
