    I defy anyone to find another choir in the world where 9-13 year old boys and girls sing together with young men and women with such musicality, poise, grace, maturity, finesse and meaning. If this doesn’t move you, you may not be human.

    Perhaps bleating on about the male/female debate is fine, perhaps sharing it on a public forum not built for debate needs consideration. It’s insulting to those who work extremely hard (including my daughter who was one of the first females to join and who has spent 22 years getting her voice to this point). It has been a highlight of my year personally and I can’t and won’t criticise any aspect of this uplifting professional performance from every single person involved. Thank you to all who brought it, I thought it was stunningly beautiful and find no need to make comparisons with history, we go forwards! Always.

      My son is the tall blonde bass! I agree: how miserable to whine about change in the way that some of these commenters have. And how preposterous to say it's 'hurting' or 'miserable'. There are terrible things happening to people all over the world, and THIS is what offends them - some gorgeous music for Christmas from a whole load of dedicated young people. I have it Bookmarked for when I feel I need a boost!

    So beautiful. Maybe the choir is still adjusting to the new conductor but I think that they are in the right direction. Very looking forward to hear more from them!!!

    Emozionante ascoltare il pubblico che canta il penultimo brano in programma quasi fosse un inno nazionale.

    I am playing this concert just as Christmas Day, 2023 begins. Noel to all who hear it. It enabled me to feel that despite what is happening in Palestine right now, while we might lose our faith in men who should know better, we must not lose hope that a voice of commonsense might sound somewhere to change hearts and minds too long mired in hatred and greed. Thanks to all those concerned with this beautiful recording.

    I had been a huge fan of the Choir of St John's College, especially of the recordings made during George Guest's time there. And then, suddenly, someone decided to just cease the traditon of a choir of men and boys at St John's. Maybe they are not fully aware of what they have destroyed. So hurting. I don't feel that's my choir anymore. George Guest would turn in his grave!

      Here at the campaign for traditional cathedral choirs we'd like to remind you that a truly traditional cathedral choir should ONLY consist of 4 boys, 2 monks who REALLY like polyphony, the local butcher (who has a ravishing countertenor voice), led by an overworked succentor.

    • @vapaus831
      @vapaus831 Місяць тому

      The adults should be paid for their singing with mutton and flagons of ale. The boys should spend 4 hours per day on Latin grammar. The succentor is allowed three days of per year.

      Traditions are always changing, not fixed.

    • @MK42693
      @MK42693 Місяць тому

      @vapaus831: That is polemics. Tradition is then changed when there is the possiblity for improvement, and why cultural achievements are considered valuable still nowadays is because they have proven to inherit a high quality that has been appreciated then and now. Cathedral choirs of men and boys have been existing for several hundreds of years. One could have easily done away with them a long time ago, if the reason for their existence were purely that the medieval church wanted women to be quiet in church. But the fact that they still exist and have been popular and admired maybe especially in the 20th century, (a golden age for choirs of this kind, many of them having outstanding quality), so in modern times, confirms that it is just not about to hold on to a tradition without reason.
      I am from Germany, and in Germany there are many boy's choirs and they are preserved. There is, for example, the Thomanerchor Leipzig (the choir led by Bach himself). Recently, some member of the City Council of Leipzig wanted girls to get admitted to the Thomanerchor. But the vast majority of the City Council, elected by the people of Leipzig, voted against, and even more, it were two women who gave a speech against this aim. The choirmaster doesn't want it either. In Berlin some parent sued the Staats- und Domchor Berlin (a boy's choir) to get her/his daughter into this choir but failed. I think most of the population wouldn't want to see a boy's choir being changed into a mixed choir, also because there are many girl's choirs, too.
      If one wants to have a choir consisting of men and women, girls and boys, one is free to found such a choir. But I consider it cultural vandalism to turn upside down a so accomplished choir with such a long history like the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge. And that act doesn't come from the population but from a handful of people in Cambridge that force their ideology upon everyone else.
      For me, as an admirer of the English Choral Tradition, this change is deeply sad.
      That reminds me of the follwing: The University Church of Leipzig was blasted in 1968 by the GDR regime. Today, after GDR is gone, the church has been rebuilt.
      So maybe in the future, St John's College Choir will be brought back into the original state, again.

    The Christmas concert held at this venue in 2018 was still full of sublime beauty. After listening to this year's concert, I was shocked to see how much the level had fallen in just five years.I have been listening to wonderful performances recorded under George Guest since I was young. The heavenly sounds of that era are gone forever.Nothing make me sadder than this miserable reality. In a few years, this choir will probably become a good mediocre mixed choir that can be found everywhere in the world. People in the UK are unaware of what they are loosing in their culture due to the hypocrisy of gender equality. I'm a 70 year-old woman(so a humble human-being) and not a English speaking person, as my poor English shows, but I have been a enthusiastic lover of the traditional english all-male choir sound. I thought I couldn't die without saying this. So please excuse my direct words.

    I prefer the old st johns sound.

  • @mzalme197

    This was until recently a choir almost without peer in the world.
    It is trading on a reputation that was formed by a degree of past excellence now sadly damaged. It is a problem of mismanagement.
    The carols are delivered with the usual charm, but the difference becomes obvious with music that asks for greater subtlety, for example the de Victoria.
    Other pieces of this complexity are uncharacteristically absent from the playlist.
    Anyone who doubts what I say need only listen to a concert given by St John’s at this venue five years ago, on 17 December 2018.
    A world of difference: all of those present able to perform music of miraculous depth and complexity for the length of the concert.
    I do not direct this criticism at the performers but at the management!

    I don't know which is the more deplorable : the look of them now, or the sound of them. What I do know is that I won't be wasting any more time on St John's . . .

    • @MsChoralmusic
      @MsChoralmusic 7 місяців тому +9

      I agree. The sound has changed so much. I really do not know why they couldn't have kept it an all-male institution. There's other colleges that have mixed voices, why not leave the men and boys' choirs tradition alone? And now it seems like all-male choirs are becoming more extinct. I really do not see the point in having females singing alto when men have been singing alto for years. It completely distorts the sound.

    • @francescoboneri
      @francescoboneri 7 місяців тому +11

      Since Heather Hancock was appointed Master, St John's College has become ever more the Follower of Fashion - and the fashion today is the Feminist Politically Correct Woke Ideology - thus an all-male choir was anathema. Indeed, I would argue the Choir's worldwide celebrity, maintained for decades, sealed its fate under the new regime. I doubt today's disfigurement of the Choir would have happened when Christopher Dobson was Master - he was a strong supporter of the Choir, in other words, of a centuries-old tradition and the aesthetic of authenticity.@@MsChoralmusic

      I must admit to being surprised and disappointed when I saw girls in the choir, I have read over the years, and I with totally untrained musical background do believe that girls voices at that age do not have the same quality as the voice of a boy pre puberty. It will be interesting to see how many of the remaining all male choirs, Kings Cambridge and the Oxford colleges amongst others survive.

    • @francescoboneri
      @francescoboneri 7 місяців тому +1

      I'm sorry to be the bearer of sad news, but the Oxford boys' choirs (Christ Church, Magdalen, New College) ceased to be all-male years ago : there are women among the men (singing alto); mercifully there aren't (yet) girls among the boys. Even more culpable than this sacrilege is the deafening silence of former Directors of Music, truly a 'trahison des clercs' . . .@@artfuldodger4850

      I don't care so much about the "look", but there is a millennium of music written for boys' and men's voices, and the timbres and sociodynamics of these choirs singing in echoey cathedrals was the foundry of Western harmonics and musical development. St. John's was one of the absolutely finest exemplars of this tradition, Anglican subdivision. To destroy this choir was an act of sheer cultural vandalism on the part of St John's and Cambridge U. Every last remaining traditional choir is in the sights of hyper-ideologues, who would have been perfectly at home in Stalin's Russia or Mao's China.
