How to Remove a White Heat Stain from Wood Furniture
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The internet is full of suggestions for removing a heat stain from furniture. Everything from rubbing combinations of toothpaste, baking soda, salt, olive oil, vinegar, petroleum jelly and even mayonnaise. Do they work?
There are also as many suggestions that the fixes don't work or that it makes the problem worst. I wanted to try an easy method first without refinishing the tabletop.
In this video I document the easy DIY solution I tried using a hot iron and a tea towel to remove the mark from the finish. Can you make the problem worse? YES! watch the video!!
This method may not work for everyone. If this solution works for you please click the like button and leave a comment. And if it doesn't work for you let us know in the comments as well.

You just saved my marriage of 35 years!
Glad I could help!
OMGGGG IM DYING
😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
Hahhh
Lmao
Five years later and this video is still saving lives, thank you so much! My mother will never know I almost ruined her coffee table.
I won't tell her.
Worked for us! No steam, set the iron to "cotton" mode. Only took 8-10 scrubs. This literally saved our marriage.
Awesome! Another table and marriage saved!
Hi, I just put a hot microwaved paper plate with a slice of very hot pizza on it on my nice end table. It left that fog stain. I thought for sure that I had damaged the surface and would have to sand it and refinish it. I went to UA-cam and typed in "heat stain on wood" and the first video was yours. I did the iron thing and it worked! Thanks!
Stay safe and healthy during this health crisis.
Pizza has been the cause on a few heat stains on furniture. I'm glad to hear my video helped you.
@@Woodified I just did this with a hot pocket on chairside table. Does it matter what type of towel is used?
@@csederlund Doesn't matter. You just need a piece of cloth between the iron and table. A t-shirt or a pillow case will work.
I would like to add that this also worked on my hardwood floor. I left the steam mop on my hardwood floor to long and it left a white mark. After searching the internet i stumbled upon this video, and much to my surprise this worked!
AWESOME! Thanks for sharing your results. Refinishing hardwood floors is a big dusty job.
This was genius! I had a heat mark on our $1500 coffee table and I was ready to just have it sanded and restrained but then I saw your video, I tried it and it worked! It's completely gone and it looks brand new, thank you. It also worked on our dining room table which had quite a few marks now it's completely stain free and I don't have to keep a table cloth on it.
I'm pleased my video helped you repair your tables.
Thank you for this! I was in a panic when I saw the big foggy spot my breakfast plate left. It worked perfectly and saved my table! 😁👍🏼
You should never use a steam mop on a hardwood floor.
THANK YOU! I'm glad I watched this before I started rubbing ashes and mayonnaise on my night stand! Great video! thank you again
glad my video saved you from spreading mayo and ashes on your night stand.
I am yet another person for whom it worked!! We bought a nice solid wood table secondhand from an individual. The stains were mostly faint but years old. At first I used just heat on a cotton (hot) setting. When after 8 minutes or so it didn't seem to be doing anything, I sprayed some water on my tea towel. After checking and spraying twice, the stain was gone!! Same method on the other stains - I got the wood hot with just heat, then sprayed the towel. Keep the iron moving, and move the towel maybe every other time you check. Now we have no more heat stains!! I am so grateful for this video and all the comments, that gave me confidence to try it!
Awesome! I'm glad my video and everyone's comments gave you the confidence to try it yourself.
Worked! Amazing! Cotton Cloth, High Heat, No Steam, Kept the iron moving. I did a dozen or so sets of reheating the iron. For the first four or five sets you think it's not working then suddenly you start to see the change. Much gratitude to you!
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your settings.
I can't believe how well this worked. I had two nasty stains on our kitchen table from my kids taking things directly from the microwave. One of them was over 6 months old and it was gone in less then 10 minutes. Thank you so much. I was afraid I would have to strip the entire surface. Who would have ever thought of applying heat to a mark that was created by heat!
I know it seems like this would be one of those internet "hacks" that just wastes everyone's time. I'm glad to hear you saved yourself the pain of stripping the table.
For those who did the same as I did and skipped through the video to watch the parts I wanted the iron was set to 5 and no steam. After watching the video I was in the same situation. This was my last effort to do something to my counter height table from Ashley furniture that looked pretty similar to the one in the video and was willing to get rid of it if this didn't work. I used a red shop towel and it also worked. What I will say is that move the iron and the towel around frequently. It took me around 10-15 minutes so you will need to be patient. Leaving the iron in one spot did the same as in the video where it started to leave the towel mark. I wish I could upload the pictures to show the difference. Since this table is several years old I added Murphy's oil at the end just to give it some extra shine. You really have to get down at the table level to be able to tell that there was anything there before but this helped so much. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your results and tips.
Found this video 8 years later. Thank you. It works. Except I replaced the iron with a hairdryer. I used a hot hair blow dryer and a thin microfiber cloth.
Fantastic!
Did you have to apply pressure on top of the towel?
Unbelievable! It worked!! My stain was two white misted circles on a dark wood surface. I did very short bursts of hot iron on an unfolded tea towel on each segment and bit by bit it disappeared! Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Worked like magic. Thanks so much. I was asked to sell my mothers' oak table and it had 7 white heat spots on it substantially reducing the value. I used a linen tea towel 1 thickness and an iron set to wool (medium hot) no steam. Circle the iron over the spot briskly for 8 seconds. All the spots were cured in under a minute. Best repair hack I've ever found on the net.
Thanks Elaine E. for the nice compliment. Glad I was able to help you out.
Hi, Google brought me to your video, and all I can say is a huge THANKYOU, I have a large coffee table made from recycled Oregon wood, which I've had for 20 years, and I've had cup circles on that table for about 12 years now, I viewed your video 30 mins ago and thought I'd give it a go before sanding and restaining . Well I'm glad I did, because it actually worked, in about 10 minutes.
I love the table so much, and thanks to you I've saved a lot of time and I can't thank you enough.
God bless you and happy new year.
I'm so glad my video saved you the time and money of refinishing your Oregon wood table. I think everyone with wood furniture needs to know this easy fix.
Just spent $100 on a wonderful dining room table from Craigslist that had several big heat stains on it. We tried what you suggested and it removed every one of them. Unbelievable...thanks so much!
That is awesome!
I was sick last night when someone put a hot chili bowl on my table and it left a horrible white mark. Worried about it all night. Got up and looked for solutions and came upon your video. I did it like 5 times and NOTHING so I was worried I had a different kind of table. the sixth swipe it started to fade. After about 10 passes.......IT”S GONE!! I’m so excited. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for the great comment. I love hearing the success stories like yours!!
Woodifiedq
oh my GOD i saved a coffee table my parents gifted me holy CRAP nothing had worked and I didnt think this would, either. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
U R welcome!
I just did this today. We had a wood dining table which had more than 40 white glass stain all over it, I was covering it and was thinking give it away and today with 30 minutes Ironing it is again as new as a new table. I am so happy about it. 🎉❤
That is awesome!
Just checking out of a 5-star hotel in Europe and used this trick to fix the large teapot mark accidentally left on the antique table! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Great story! Thanks for sharing.
6yrs later this video is still coming in clutch! It worked. Thank you! 🙏🏼🙌🏼
You're welcome!
Worked like a champ! No steam needed. Easiest DIY tutorial I've ever used. THANKS!
You're welcome!
This works great I tried with an hair dryer at first that didn't work very well, did it with the iron and in seconds the cup marks were gone my furniture looks better now thanks for sharing.
I was wondering if a hair dryer would get the job done. Thanks for sharing your results.
Setting the iron to its highest heat is what worked for me... cotton setting was too low and didnt do much. At its highest setting, it took 5 seconds and it was gone. Thank you!!!!
You're welcome!
Awesome video! My wife was already shopping online for a new table, while I was performing this trick. I win! Thanks for this video!
LOL! Fantastic!
I removed a cup water stain from my varnished coffee table in 2 minutes. I watched it disappear with no effort at all. I tried the equal parts vinegar and olive oil but this method did not work on my table. Deepest gratitude to maker of this video.
You're welcome. I'm glad you found my video.
THANK YOU!! Mum wont end me now. I used a small face towel, low setting (like 1/3), no steam. Took maybe 20 seconds. Lifted the towel every now and then coz I didnt want it to stick to the table.
Great! thanks for sharing your results.
Finally something useful on the internet.
Thank you!! I appreciate your praise of my video.
This just saved my late mums coffee table and I am so so grateful! Thanks so much for this video. I did what you did and had success after trying a baking soda remedy I found online that did not work. This worked almost instantly! 👍👌💜
You're welcome. Thanks for sharing your results!
thank you so much for posting this. I had did the exact same thing only with a hot bowl of matzo ball soup. Your solution worked perfectly. You turned what felt like an expensive disaster into “look!-it vanished!!” in 10 minutes flat. thx again.
That's great! Thank you for sharing your results! It's a super easy fix that everyone should know about.
Just moved into a beautiful new home 5 days ago...got very nice, very expensive wooden coffee tables delivered yesterday...banned my children from eating ANYWHERE in the house except the kitchen table...well...being the softee that I am...allowed my son to eat a plate of lasagna in the living room on our new coffee table 😒😔 picked up his plate, and to my horror, see a giant white spot in its place!!!😭😭😭 oh.my.god!!! After doing a little research and stumbling upon this video...i am pleased to say that my table is brand new again 😀 my husband wouldve killed me!👀😬😆 THANK YOU so much!!❤🥰
Your comment made my day. Thank you for sharing your story. I love hearing that my video is helping people.....including saving lives!!!😄😆
Woah thank you, i was debating to strip down my whole table top or paint it. It’s now like new again x
NICE!
Long story short...it works!! In my case it did not work without steam but as soon as I used steam it worked. Like other comments, this may depend on the wood and finish. Thx for the video
That's great. Thanks for sharing your results!
I’ve been putting off trying this for a loooong time cuz I just knew with my luck it was going to cause bigger problems and look terrible, but I’m in same boat as you now, no ties to it and getting ready to sell, so I figured what the heck. I just did it and WOW, YIPPEE, YAHOO!!! I started at a low iron setting, absolutely not going to work, so put it up to my “cotton” setting(almost highest setting)and worked through multiple spots on my table. It does take time, be patient, totally worth it, it definitely works, wish I had done it when I first saw this. Oh, I tried steam and it made it worse, but went back with regular iron and worked it out with no problem. Here’s a thought, why not make a DINING table with something that can handle heat since, well, we use it to eat HOT food. 🤣😆😬. Thank you for sharing!
Good suggestion about table top material being able to handle heat. My mind went right to a granite top on a dinning table. It would be heavy and expensive. BUT could look amazing and you could place hot plates and pots directly on the table.
I'm astonished it works for years I have tried different products I have a dinning table and coffee table with the white heat mark, it's gone!!!!! Thank you
Fantastic!
Omg I just sat down and decided to do this after my hubby set a pizza box on our beautiful table about a month ago. At first I thought it wouldn’t work because I didn’t see any progress after about 30 minutes of working on it. I laid the iron on it and went to check on something and I came back 3-4 minutes later and it was mostly gone! I have now restored our gorgeous table due to removing the heat mark that was the size of a saucer. I’m so so happy and thankful.
Thanks great that you stuck with it and we're able to remove the mark.
My mark is from a pizza box too! I thought it was a grease stain at first until I found this video! Going to give this a try now, I hope it works.
Just went and did this to my timber dining table and it looks like new 👍🏼 thanks
Awesome!
Thanks a million. We have a teak table which had heat stains on it for years. I was hesitant to use iron on the table until I saw this demonstration and decided to try it. The stains disappeared like magic and the table looks brand new. I wish I had taken before and after pictures. Thanks again. This was a simple remedy that worked like a charm!
I'm pleased my video helped you repair your table.
Big tip :) - don't have water in the water chamber of your iron - you are only adding more water damage to the table top. DRY IRON ONLY. Even with steam turned off - steam will lightly come out.
thanks for the tip.
My current iron won't even turn on if there's no water in it. I hate this one anyway, but I don't iron often enough to justify the cost of replacing it. I guess I have a new excuse now. 🤣
Thank God for Google and UA-cam. Totally just tried this on the wood table at the Airbnb I'm staying at. Accidentally caused a heat stain. This worked like magic!
Another 5 star review 😀
LEGEND! worked a treat after i left a hot pizza box on our solid wood table - thought id wrecked it! No steam for me. Just took my time slowly upping the iron heat and using fewer layers of a dish cloth until it started disappearing! Brilliant!
Glad it helped!
IT WORKED!!!!
Thank you.
My table is saved!!!!!
You're welcome!
I was so skeptical about this method but it really does work. Thank you. I tried the toothpaste and baking soda method which didn't work.
Glad it helped!
Just did this trick to my in laws stairs that I steam mopped and caused white marks. Can confirm cotton setting on iron with no steam!!
Thanks for sharing your results for your stairs.
I had around 7 dime to quarter size white stain marks on my dining room table and after living with this for the past 3 years decided to see if Google had a simple fix. Your video was one of the first UA-cam videos to pop up. I was skeptical but did it anyway and my table looks new after only about 10 minutes max total time. No more milk looking stains on my dining room table. Thank you so much.
I'm glad to hear you were able to repair your table.
This video has staying power 😅 I only moved in with my girlfriend a few months ago and left a big heat mark (hot food) on the dining room table yesterday. Picked up a cheap iron today and completely removed it in a few minutes! You’re a lifesaver.
I love hearing stories of how my video has helped people out.
You just saved another soul! Thank you.
Glad I could help!
Came to say just saved a disaster after Thanksgiving. Ours was a larger and whiter mark. I had to take the heat up to max though which helped. No steam used. I however left a little damage behind since at the end my hands were tired and I left an imprint of the towel on the table. Guess I should stress moving the rag frequently.
Awesome!
It worked… Thank you so much. I actuallt took a thick napkin and make it super hot on the stove and then rubbed the table. I couldt find an iron 🤦🏻♀️, It would have probably be much better than the Hot napkin
Hey, what ever gets the job done.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I had 2 white spots on my dining room table, one was a watermark from a glass and the other was a paper plate that had hot spaghetti and meat sauce that covered almost an 8 inch circle mark on the table. I've only had this table for a month and a half. I'm very happy to say the hot, no steam, iron and tea towel worked PERFECTLY! So thank you for teaching me how to make it look new again!!!👏👏👏👏👏
Wonderful! thanks for sharing your results.
Came back to say THANK YOU! Totally worked! We got a table cheap, but unseen. Had huge white marks. This video saved the table. We were able to sell it for several hundred dollars without any work other than removing the white fog marks! Great video!
That's great to hear that you could flip the table after removing the marks. Keep your eyes open for another table you can flip.
Some of your viewers might want to try a hair dryer. The idea is the same...releasing the moisture trapped under the finish. Start with a low setting for the dryer and gradually move to hotter settings if necessary. Keep the hair dryer several inches from the table as you constantly keep the dryer moving. The potential advantage of this method is you can observe what's happening to the finish in real-time.
thanks for the tip. Also works on kitchen cabinets that are not flat.
This is such a classic dad video
I'm thinking of a good classic dad comment to replace my comment here, LOL
Works best with a very thin towel. A few spritzes of water from the iron and apply steam from iron in a circular motion. With a thicker towel, it takes longer because the heat isn't getting through. With a very thin towel you can see a difference immediately.
Thanks for the extra tip J O!
WORKED!!!!!! Tried it first on an old table that had a spot and it worked! Took a DEEP breath and headed to the newer table and tried it. I am sooooo thankful!!!
2 tables! glad to hear it worked on your old and new table.
Thank you - it worked for me! A whole pot of hot coffee spilled on an antique piece of furniture. I was devastated. White streaks everywhere. All gone now. 😊
Wonderful!
Thank you, you save my relationship with my mom!
Wonderful! These stains can be stressful until they get removed.
It worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much for saving my day
You're welcome
It worked for me on my wooden dresser, but be sure to keep it moving otherwise the fabric will stick to the wood and make sure it's not too hot.
Great tip. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, that’s why I said it takes patience. It worked for me. Plus, no steam as the way he did it.
A 3-year-old video and this saved my bacon, thanks for never removing the video and saving me the pain of sand and revarnish :)
Your'e welcome. It's the video that keeps on helping people out. Sanding and refinishing is such a pain.
Had a hot pizza box on my coffee table last night, left a big white mark. Tried your method this morning and it worked like a charm. Took about 15 minutes off and on but it worked great, thank you!
Fantastic! Thanks for your comment.
Well glad we could iron that out.......
LOL!!!😂😂😂
Who woulda thought a hot pizza box would cause my so much pain
Same
Pizza boxes need a warning label!
Thank you so much. Not only did it take away the heat stain. I also had a water mark that was at least 4 years old. The iron removed both marks with ease. Very grateful for your video.
Glad it helped!
My wooden rv table looked pretty bad. I used your technique and it worked. It took about twenty minutes, i ended up using the highest setting and kept the iron moving. If you really look you can see a ghost of one cup ring, but nothing like before and other large spots are gone. I didn’t want to push my luck. I am happy with the results. Thanks! !
you're welcome. Glad you found my video.
You saved my boyfriend’s furniture* thank you, my hero lol -sincerely, coffee drinker that forgets coasters
LOL, sounds like this life hack might be useful again in the future....seeing that you forget coasters, lol.
Woodified hahaha yes, it’s going to be like a Sunday cleaning habit lol
@@picklepirate LOL. Dust and iron furniture...check
I really works!!! It's amazing, thank you so much.
I was amazed too when it worked for me!
It worked great! Use a 100% cotton cloth, something similar to a nice table napkin. Moving the iron and the cloth around the area slowly and stopping randomly for 10-15 seconds did the trick for me, the whole area was clear in about 15-20 minutes. Another "pizza box" incident. :|
Thanks for sharing your results. Pizza boxes should have a warning :)
@@Woodified I agree about the warning label! 😄
It worked! I was super careful, put the iron on a middle temp, went section by section. I kind of took breaks because I didn't want the finish to get too hot. I did a slow 8 count and moved the towel after that count so it wouldn't get stuck on and ruin the finish. Fantastic. I thought my table was ruined. Thank you!
Excellent!
This was a SUPER way to get the table back to normal. Did a shrimp boil, poured hot shrimp, potatoes, corn and sausage on paper sacks and it made a big ragged white mark on the table. Used this, and within 30 minutes it was done!! Awesome!!
I'm glad to were able to remove the marks from your table. I hope you were able to enjoy the shrimp before seeing the marks on the table.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you! 😭
You're welcome!
Very strange.
I was here looking for a solution, because I put a Terry cloth dish towel on my dining room table, and ironed a shirt on it.
Now I have a big white stain very similar to the one you're showing.
Update: I don't have a tea towel; in fact, I had never even heard that term before watching this video.
I used a t-shirt. The white stain I had was quite large - about the size of a dinner plate. I set my iron halfway like you did, and after a full minute, maybe a little more, the white stain started to disappear a little. As I often do, I got a little impatient and decided to try it with the steam. As soon as I turned the steam on, the stain really started to disappear. The whole thing was gone within 30 seconds.
Awesome Dave! Thanks for sharing your results. A tea towel is just a cotton hand towel or dish drying towel. As you realized any fabric that can with stand the heat from the iron will work, t-shirt, pillow case, etc.
This might save my husbands life after he left a hot pizza sitting on our wood table last night.
That might make for a good channel slogan: Savings lives, tables, and relationships! One video at a time, LOL!
Haha! I’m happy to report, it WORKED! He can live another day lol.
Thats exactly why I'm here watching this video 😆
It worked! Paper plates with hot food caused large nasty white marks on our table. Iron + cloth fixed it in minutes. Amazing!
Fantastic!
Me too! It worked perfectly!!!
It worked!!!! You just saved our brand new dining table! Thank you!
Perfect! That must have been very stressful.
Automotive rubbing compound works very well also and then you buff it and it will remove it , it's all in the clear
coat not in the wood..
thanks for the tip.
funciona muchísimo mas rápido si mojas un poco la toalla que estas usando para poner la plancha encima, la mancha se evapora mas rápido y es más eficiente
gracias por compartir el consejo
This worked to remove the damage from nail polish remover
Awesome!
You are a genius. Was sad that after my daughter had her hair and make up done for her wedding by the ladies that my table was left with a large white fog mark. Although I was skeptical I tried it and the mark is gone . So glad I was able to find your video . Thank you
Wonderful! I'm glad the day will be a happy day for you after all :)
Actually worked!! I had a HUGE stain on the table, probably from a hot to-go box. It took almost 30 minutes, but it was so worth it! Patience is key lol
Way to go! thanks for sharing your results.
This worked on my coffee table 23/06/2024
Great!
it worked perfectly. Thank you !!!!
you're welcome!
Totally worked!!! Wow!
Awesome!!
The idea was fantastic and really worked. I actually didnt use the tea towel instead used the iron box directly ( without the steam ) on the table with a low to medium head and slightly moving it around the white patches. It did wonder as it started to slowly start to vanish the wihte patches and the table started to look a like brand new. Thanks for the suggestion.
That's great. I was worried I'd scratch the table without the towel. Thanks for sharing your results.
It worked, my coffee table looks like nothing happened thanks to your video! Big Thank You
That's GREAT!
its trapped moisture in the finish so the heat from the iron opens it back up and lets the trapped moisture evaporate. heard it can be done with alcohol fumes too but never tried myself.
I'll add that to my to try list, thanks
you saved me from ass whooping haha. much appreciated
LOL! I'm glad you found my video in time!
Major props man, this worked for a french press burn mark. Took about 5-10 minutes of ironing until it all came off. Thanks!
you're welcome.
It worked! It took about 10 minutes of heat for it to finally come out but it's definitely gone and looks picture perfect again. THANK YOU! ♥️
Great to hear!
How come if heat from your plate caused the white mark, heat from the iron doesn't cause a white mark?
Perhaps the steam from the hot item caused the white mark. Heat (no steam) may pull the moisture back out of the wood. Just my thought. This has worked for me in the past.
Yes it let's the moisture out of the finish.
You just saved me from getting my ass kicked by my mom
You're welcome Anthony. Have a good one!
It worked! Thanks so much😊
You're welcome!
It worked with steam 😅 u just saved me from my wife…unbelievable…wasn’t expecting it to work but gave it a try and it blew my mind 😅😀❤️
Great to hear!
This worked! Patience is key. Let wood “exhale” too. Give it a chance to release the trapped moisture.
Thanks for sharing your tips.
You just saved my security deposit from our company team building
Love saving people $$$
I messed up my table with nail polish remover and I'm 100% fucked. Come to my funeral yall
IT'S ALRIGHT, I COLOURED IT IN WITH COLOR PENCIL AND IT LOOKS GOOD
YT held your comment and I'm just reading it now. How's the color pencil holding up? If you don't respond I'll assume you attended your funeral.
Omg!!!! Worked great!!! Iron no steam and t towel....cant believe it..l've tried oils and wood paste and nothing worked....soooo happy l came across your video thank uuuu!!!
I just tried it a few hours ago as well. I cant believe how well it worked. I want to share this with the world lol
Great to hear!
Nice!!
Thanks so much for this! I'm at an Airbnb and I inadvertently made a heat mark on the coffee table with a bowl of cooked lentils. I tried the iron technique from an article and didn't get anywhere with it. I moved on to other strategies from the article that also didn't work. I'm so glad I found your video because the trick is a little higher heat than I was previously using and staying with it longer. The owners will never be the wiser. Your "before" heat mark was much more pronounced than mine, so it was quite convincing to see the improvement. Whew, you saved me!
You're welcome!
I just tried it on our wood table with the steam on and I was able to remove the huge stain in under 5 minutes. Thanks for the video.
Awesome! thanks for sharing your results
I don't reply to UA-cam videos, but dude THANK YOU! I needed some steam to work it but it came out perfectly!! I burned an inherited table. Barely owned it a week and "pizza boxed" an big white burn into it. Thought I was in for an expensive repair.
thanks for taking the time to share your experience. It's comments like yours that motives me to create DIY vids.
