I went through a similar decision the last year. I bought the FHF Gear FOB bino harness with the wings and tried attaching the holster on the side as well. I couldn't get the draw to work consistently and ended up using a drop holster. For what you're using it for in the interim it makes sense. But like you mention in a hunting scenario, I wouldn't trust it up high. Good luck!
After using it a little bit, I definitely wouldn't trust my life with that draw. But like you said that I said, for me and what I'm doing it makes sense.
Guardian Warrior Solutions make a molle adaptor kedex holster/ gear. I'd check em out for a purpose made product.

Could an AR mag fit in the front part of the attached utility pouch?
Good catch, it actually does! Provided you don't overstuff the pouch itself, it fits. If you're doing any activity it could fall out, but I suppose you could add a bit of retention somehow
What's happened at the range? I went to make reservations and wasn't able to. Any info?
Change in management again. Land owners are taking the lead. The guys from SWFL range and Gun Club are going to try and open a new place.

Its not a bad setup but for mounting a pistol personally I would lean more towards a drop leg with a mag holder attached
In a different situation I totally agree, for what I'm doing, this will work just fine because it saves me weight by leaving a belt at home
