- This is the longest event sequence in the game. Cloud and Tifa have fallen into the Lifestream after Mideel was attacked by Ultimate Weapon causing the ground to crack open. While they are there they deal with Cloud's psychological issues and help him discover just who he really is.. and many more questions are also answered.

Want to know what "love" is? This is what love is. Tifa stayed by Cloud's side when it looked like he was a goner, then pieced him back together when he really was a goner. If this isn't a compelling case for the strength and power of love, then love doesn't exist.
Tifa stays by him 3 times in fact, she finds him in a weakened state at the station takes him in. Tifa finds him here in Mideel stays with him, while the rest of the party abandons him "Tifa chooses Cloud" maybe due to him being her sole connection to her past, but this scene reveals its actually love. She stays with him under the Highwind as he is all she really has, same goes for Cloud who realizes it there.
Cloud and Tifa is one of the greatest romances in gaming.

Unlike Garnet from FFIX who DRUGGED AND ABANDONED ZIDANE first chance she got just so she can run back home to mommy like an idiot and have her Eidolons used to kill a bunch of people, and NEVER gets called out on it, especially by Zidane who should be very rightfully be upset with her for blowing him off.

@@kaage8780 Yep, Garnet ran from Brahne based on her own evidence, her own experience and her knowledge that staying is worse for herself, her mother, its citizens and the entire world. It aligned PERFECTLY (but coincidentally!! lol!) with her uncle's, Regent Cid of the other powerful trade nation Lindblum, plan to use the troupe Tantalus to "kidnap" her away from what HE, TOO, could tell was an increasingly psychopathic queen of Alexandria.
The game proves both of these royals' decision to have Garnet leave and not return was the best choice for absolutely everyone involved. But Garnet has a sudden mood-switch and acts like a child, blowing off Zidane and ordering her personal knight to guide her back to the Queen just to talk to her and have no other goal whatsoever, thinking it'll all be fine despite all the compounding, building and extreme level of evidence proving at every step this was the wrong decision to make causing her mortal risk when she was otherwise entirely safe (and loved).
All this ends with the completely obvious result: Garnet loses everything, MILLIONS if not more are murdered with absolutely no cause or reason why, specifically because of the impossibly powerful magic Garnet, herself, knew she would be giving directly to this queen. Destruction, all by ignorant and dismissive choice, which renders the entire first 2/3rds of the in-game political and social actions utterly pointless to no positive outcome, not to mention screwing up the love story. The last 1/3rd of the game is simply fantasy where nothing mattered to begin with, it was all just Kuja using emotions to kill everyone faster due to orders, the characters of the game all were completely irrelevant. Only the reaper and Garland's thousands upon thousands of years of experience mattered.
But hey, pear-shaped ass, amirite?
This is very deep material and Nobuo Uematsu is a genius. The doctor explains and the player can tell that being exposed to mako produces an altered state of consciousness that can become complete dissociation at a long enough exposure (Cloud is clearly not there, mumbling nonsense). The mako energy is psychoactive, and this whole sequence is basically Tifa helping Cloud through an extremely intense mental breakdown and catharsis. All of these constructed memories and missing pieces of his past in his subconscious mind are being brought to the surface because of the powerful psychoactive effect of the mako energy. Tifa has an ego-death experience of her own before finding Cloud, then she helps him through his. The music in this sequence perfectly conveys Cloud's anxiety about exploring his past and his fear of going over the edge. It perfectly conveys the fear of losing one's sanity during such an identity crisis. This is hands-down and by far the single strongest bonding experience between Cloud and Tifa. It's parts like this in the game that really make the characters come to life in our minds.

Much better than what IX gave us with it’s cliché “You’re not alone segment” that didn’t even properly put emphasis on Zidane and Garnet.
@@Zelink108 That's because it wasn't really about them as much as it was a reinforcement of the main theme. "You're not Alone" is the mainline of FF9 - as in, despite all the tragedy and absolutely despicable stuff, there are friends around you that are affected and know your troubles and it's important not to forget - and not to forget supporting each other.
The game even opens with quotes like "You don't need a reason to help someone". It's maybe a little on the nose and definitely not as emotionally powerful as the Lifestream sequence, but it's very true to life and something everyone should know but easily forgets.
To this day, IMO, this is the greatest plot unraveling in the history of gaming.

Zidane breaking down into despair in ff9 was pretty good too. He was so far gone he abandoned the whole party and almost let kuja destroy everything. Celes almost committing suicide in ff6vl is another one.
But yeah this moment in ff7 is still fantastic and still one hell of a twist even today. Seeing the true cloud find himself was brilliant. It's similar to losing yourself time after time in life and putting yourself back together and finding yourself..through trauma we can all lose things..even ourselves for a while.
I felt so bad for the tiny Cloud, when the village people helped Tifa but blamed him and he was left injured and all alone. I literally wanna go hug him. And still he didn't take it out on Tifa. He was such a precious little boy T_T

Why would he take it out on Tifa? Her mom died, and she fell off a cliff. it WAS a conscious choice by him to follow her knowing it was dangerous. Tifa was also "just a little kid" Cloud may be weak, but he's not THAT weak.

I absolutely can't wait for this scene in the remake. It's so memorable and beautiful that Tifa was able to fix Cloud's mind. When Cloud and Tifa reunites, the iconic prelude would be played in the background. It's signifies the moment they come back together again after 7 years of separation.
Those screams and the sounds when Tifa is stuck in the black void... haunting...
Part 3 better deliver on this in the remakes. This was the cliamx of the game when Tifa pieces Cloud together and the real Cloud comes finally back.
If the remake doesn't include "On the Other Side of the Mountain" I will be pissed.
This scene in the game was so amazing the setup, the writing their subconscious dream state to bring back their true psychology FF7 was the game about truly finding yourself and building on your weaknesses from rock bottom. Such an inspirational movie video game and the score. Right on the money.
Man this music is so beautifully haunting. I can't believe this game sometimes. That a group of geniuses fathomed this masterpiece out of imagination.
This was the greatest moment in gaming for me.
This for me is the single most intimate part of the game, even more than Highwind scene. It's a bonding experience between Cloud and Tifa unlike any opther, on soul level. But imo it's always so underrated. People always talk dates, affection levels, night under Highwind while arguing about relationships but I think THIS scene is the main argument.

seasonaldates in the highwind scene they had sex. It was heavily implied in the high affection tifa they did. But this one hits home.

6:13 Tifa remembering her "foreboding" about Sephiroth fascinates me because it's such a chilling detail.
Cloud is talking about awakening. And it can relate to everyone, and our identities we create . We play characters in our lives everyday, behind illusions of make-believe.
Indeed we do. I think this is why I and many others feel so inspired by Cloud's character. There is something very emotional about watching someone find their true self. It could be an indicator that there is a deep part of all of us that wishes to be authentic.

When I was young I detested this part of the game. It felt so out of place.
Now that I'm grown and matured, I see it as a plot device that was done quite masterfully. Well done
I really hope this part will be made justice in the part 3 of the remake. To me, this is the best scene of the game, and maybe of the entire Final Fantasy franchise, because it tells you an important thing: the real, true love to someone got much more power than any cataclysm. Tifa saved Cloud, as much as Cloud saved her.

part of the reason it got to this extreme was because she hid the truth from him for so long. and she had to help him at this point or they both would probably have died, certainly wouldn't have made it back

This stories plot twist was the most epic ever! I sort of spoiled it by watching Crisis Core first. (It made me all the more confused about the whole thing until this point.)

So the tender memories scene, that's obviously implying that Cloud was in love with Tifa, correct? Did she figure that out as well at that moment? I know later on she does anyway in that under the highwind scene but I'm wondering if she realized it before any of that other stuff ever happened.

Tifa has always loved Cloud... It's just that she didn't realise that until he left Nibelheim.

The true plot twist of this story was here! Damn right, that was good and unexpected! After this scene, I totally confirm FFVII is (with FFVI, but I discovered this one too late with emulator) the best of the FF saga!

Agreed. Aerith's death scene didn't do much for me. This scene is the most memorable for me. I even read that it is the favorite scene of the writers as well.
Final Fantasy VII is the Story of Cloud STRIFE to Protect & Impress his Light(Tifa) In BC,CC,Dissidia,FFVII,KH,AC,&Other.
The most hurtful moments for Cloud is when Sephiroth slaughter everyone in Nibelheim also when He tell him that Cloud is just Sephiroth Clone that was born from Hojo's lab and He just make Tifa hallucinating that boy named Cloud exist.
But Cloud looks so calm when Tseng slap Aerith & when he drown her in a lake.
I'd actually say the plot twist is Cloud being revealed as a false narrator in the Northern Crater, as a kid i was like :O and Tifa is amandatory member there and shes freaking out because she really knew Cloud was wrong about the past and his role in its events. This scene is the secondary plot twist He was there, he was protecting Tifa, he did keep his promise and he did best Sephiroth, his hero.

I can only try to guess, but perhaps these were some of Tifa's deepest fears that she faced in her subconscious as Tifa fell in the Lifestream too. They might be memories when, as a kid, Tifa was falling at Mt. Nibel, and she called Cloud for help... Or when she lost her parents, like her mother... It can represent some traumas that Tifa crossed by.

I thought this scene was incredible! I loved the whole revelation it made me love Cloud even more and made me have huge respect for Tifa, this is why I think Cloud and Tifa are a better couple than Cloud and Aerith. I can't wait to see this in the remake I bet it will be incredible. But I wonder since Cloud and Tifa are canon does anyone else think they'll include a kiss scene at the end of the revelation before they leave the life stream? I think that would blow everyone away!
There are two options where there will be a kiss, in this scene or under the highwind, althoughs in the lifestream i imagine the kiss of Tidus and Yuna.

Ignoring all of the retcons, Cloud and Tifa being together is only "canon" in that Aerith died and so Cloud would need to move on. Otherwise he can go either way.
Of course it was a better couple. Aerith wasn't in love with Cloud. Aerith was in love with Zack, and the circumstances about the Hojo experiments, making Cloud having the same personality of Zack, made Aerith see Cloud like he was Zack. This also explains itself on the Gold Saucer date between Cloud and Aerith, when at the end, she asks to him "...I want to meet the real you..." (because Aerith still illuded herself that perhaps Cloud was really Zack)
Tifa, however, saw Cloud for what he always was, and this scene shows what real love is: it wasn't just Tifa saving Cloud or him discovering again that he saved her... It was way more than that... Let's say that Cloud finally opened himself to Tifa, saying that he wanted to become stronger to protect her, because he truly loved her.
Easily the best part of the game imo. Without a doubt cements this as my favorite Final Fantasy game.

In the end he became a hero who saved the life of the planet, but what he lost during that battle took a heavy toll, and Cloud’s heart continued to be tormented by a deep sense of regret and blame towards himself. - Cloud’s Dengeki profile.
Aerith still lives on in the hearts of her friends who saved the planet. And in particular to Cloud, as a symbol of his failure to having being unable protect those dear to him, she was a major factor in causing him to close himself off. -Aerith’s 10th anniversay profile.
As long as Cloud blames himself for Aerith’s death, he won’t be able to move on with his life. One of the first ideas we had for Advent Children was to have Cloud overcome and resolve that immense feeling of guilt. After Cloud was told, “Which is it? A memory or us?: by Tifa, he tells Sephiroth, “Stay where you belong. In my memories,” just before he defeats him. I think Cloud finally becomes free at this moment. Deep down, Cloud knew that he shouldn’t be so hard on himself, but at the same time he couldn’t let go of those feelings of guilt for what happened to Aerith and Zack, or the thought that he could never forgive himself for it. Cloud’s mental illness
Psychology has always been something that intrigued me. To me, I can relate to Cloud’s depressive episode. So here’s a list if anyone is interested about what Cloud is going through post-ff7.
Here’s an idea so people can understand the weight of what mental illness does to people and relationships.

Intrusive memories
Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event
Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks)
Upsetting dreams about the traumatic event
Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the event
Negative changes in thinking and mood

Negative feelings about yourself or other people
Inability to experience positive emotions
Feeling emotionally numb
Lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed
Hopelessness about the future
Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event

It didn’t go well. But we were together. It was because we were family. We lived in the same house and we were living by uniting our strength. Maybe there wasn’t much conversation or many smiles, but we were family, Tifa thought to herself. No, it was what she made herself think. -After Cloud’s strange behavior starts.

Intensity of symptoms
PTSD symptoms can vary in intensity over time. You may have more PTSD symptoms when you’re stressed in general, or when you run into reminders of what you went through. For example, you may hear a car backfire and relive combat experiences. Or you may see a report on the news about a sexual assault and feel overcome by memories of your own assault.
Examples:

Tifa put the slip away with the others as if nothing happened, but she was trembling severely. Transporting mail around the world meant he was traveling around his past too. She knew that Cloud was in great pain because he couldn’t protect Aerith. Cloud was trying to overcome that and live on. But, going back to the place where he parted from Aerith might mean that his sorrow and regret was going to tear his heart again.
The above is also what is known as a grief trigger. A grief trigger is when you see, hear, smell, or come into contact with something that reminds you of the traumatic event. When this happens you can spiral into grief and depression.
You can be doing fine for months or even a year before you encounter this trigger.
For Cloud, his trigger was seeing Elmyra and going to Aerith’s grave.
Depression
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook-nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You’ve lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure.
Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes.
Pretty self explanatory this is how Cloud acts in ACC. He thinks he can’t do anything, he’s just willing to give up and die and let Geostigma take him.
Cloud is also cherophobic.
Cherophobic: A person who is afraid of being happy. Mostly, cherophobic people doesn’t want to be happy because they feel like something bad or tragic will happen sooner after they become happy.
Examples

Cloud was suffering from MENTAL ILLNESS. He had PTSD, and what do you know? One of the symptoms is being unable to maintain close relationships.
This doesn’t mean two people are incompatible or dysfunctional if one of them has PTSD. It’s hard on EVERYONE.
Cloud’s relationship with Tifa wasn’t even the first one to change. It was Marlene who noticed Cloud had changed. Cloud’s relationship with everyone suffered. He shut off everyone, including Tifa.
Tifa, who from 2 years ago has been the only one Cloud opened his heart to.Now he has closed off his heart even from her. ~AC Prologue Book
Tifa is the only one he opened up too, and now he’s even closed her off. Do not undermine mental illness because it can’t be cured with romantic love. Being in love with someone does not put a special safeguard around you from ever being emotionally traumatised. A symptom of PTSD is being unable to maintain close relationships, and that’s exactly what happens.

Final Fantasy VII is the Story of Cloud STRIFE to Protect & Impress his Light(Tifa) In BC,CC,Dissidia,FFVII,KH,AC,&Other.
The most hurtful moments for Cloud is when Sephiroth slaughter everyone in Nibelheim also when He tell him that Cloud is just Sephiroth's Clone that was born from Hojo's lab and He just make Tifa hallucinating that boy named Cloud exist.
But Cloud looks so calm when Tseng slap Aerith & when he drown her in a lake.
Tifa's not Cloud's "light" in KH according to its supplemental sources and other sources paint Cloud's relationships with her and Aerith as more open than you admit.
Calm down, that's why they made the REMAKE so that we can understand the story much better and much clearer, the OG seems complicated and many have speculated w/c isnt fact
@Chisa Kiryu You mean put in retcons. The remakes already have new gods/divine forces/whatever shoved into the plot.
Zidane and Garnet from IX wishes it was well done and had a scene like this (instead of the really cliché “You’re not alone” scene), instead we got Garnet selfishly drugging and abandoning him first chance she got.
Heck VII didn’t have a love song as it’s main theme like IX did (and also VIII and X) yet it still had a better done love story than IX’s.
This is my favorite part of FF7, one that gave me crazy standards of what love can be, how much we lie ourselves and more, please don't ruin it in the remake, if anything, make it better.
This scene is so long and slow-paced that it always puts me to sleep any time I try to sit through it...gotta slap myself awake!
