Absolutely. Calamity was so good. My wife has been really wanting to see Brennan do a new EXU set during the calamity. I don't think she ever anticipated it being set IN Aeor. We are very hyped for this.
Ever since they returned to Aeor all I've been thinking is how badly I want Brennan to do another EXU Calamity about this city, this feels almost too good to be true but I'm hyped af
At the beginning of the session, I was convinced that Brennan was going to make an appearance mid-game as a guest character. So it totally through me off when he took a seat in the DM chair lol
I think this Downfall arc has a lot of potential. It could paint a very one sided picture of the Gods' wrath against the city and change people's minds in Ludinus' favor. However, Patia's orb from EXU Calamity is still out there somewhere that works very similar. Showing how the Calamity truly began with the greed and hubris of the Magocracies. I don't know if it will play out that way, but that would be a really cool way to tie it all together.
You know, I'm sitting here listening to alot of the complaints of the backwards compatibility of dnd 2024 and just looking at it as a 3.5 player going "Man... I feel like I have seen this all before"
Just want to flag that Critical Role isn't advertising it as a new season of ExU; it is part of C3's main campaign in terms of episode numbers (#99-101). No idea why they went this way when they're also advertising Downfall as a standalone special you can watch with no CR/ExU knowledge but your corresponding article should probably clarify that it isn't ExU.
I personally believe that Downfall isn't going to be centered in Aeor. I think it's going to be memories from the gods that were inadvertently recorded while Aeor was destroyed. And these memories are going to be the origin story of the gods. My reasoning is because "just showing the gods being responsible for the Calamity" doesn't really prove Ludinus' point that the gods aren't as "all powerful" as they claim. But, showing the world where the gods truly came from puts them in a light on par with the mortals, which in turn lifts the veil of awe. Basically, Ludinus wants to pull back the curtain to show the man pulling the levers (Wizard of Oz reference).

Honestly, I love the idea that all the original Gods (meaning the ones that existed pre-Matron of Ravens) died during the calamity, and the current crop are their best Champions that took up their mantle and THAT is what actually ended the Calamity.
I will believe WotC/Hasbro backward compatibility statement once we can judge the quality of the rules that support that. If they are very unwieldy, poorly balanced or require a lot of judgements they are not really backward compatible.
The only thing I could see being backwards compatible are adventures. After seeing the changes to player choices and basic game rules there is NO WAY that part of the game is going to be backwards compatible.
The changes to Divine Smite actually does mess with action economy as in the past, and probably still even in 2024, a very popular feat for paladin was polearm master. I’m looking forward to seeing if people will even bother using divine smite anymore.
I'm not entirely sure if "Guidance" counts towards backwards compatibility, as most people see it. I'm reserving my thoughts until I read it, but if I got to a table with 2 different GMs and there is room for interpretation so that my Blade Singer doesn't play the same, that's not backwards compatible as far as I'm concern. One the one hand, I'm mildly disappointed the main campaign for Critical Role is effectively being put on pause for the entirety of July. ESPECIALLY since we JUST got Sam's new character. On the other hand though, another Calamity campaign being DM'd by Brenan is beyond hype! Especially based around Aeor and whatever shenanigans it was up to right before its fall? This is going to be interesting!
Downfall isn't EXU, its main campaign thats why its episode 99-101. The idea is that it will be self contained. But be ultimately very important to the main campaign story.
I'm worried as this is an EXU that is being forced on the main CR fans like a few weeks ago with the crown keepers. But calamity was a far better received show than they were, with Brendan having a DM style closer to Matt, and seemingly, this won't need people to do homework by watching EXU calamity to know what is happening. A big downside is that Sam just got back and is now gone for another month
I'm so happy about the old subclasses working with the 2024 rules! I think that's a major win for the upcoming core rule books. I mentioned this on a previous video, but it's seeming more and more that the 2024 rules are essentially a more elaborate version of the Optional Class Features released with Tasha's. And personally, I'm pretty happy with that. On a different note, I'm super hype for another Brennan mini series on Critical Role!
I am really into it! Thing is: I've never gotten into Critical Role, except for their Amazon show and the Calamity mini campaign with Brennan. It was so gripping and intense. I need some more of this!

Yeah, same honestly. As both a player and a DM, I definitely prefer the original 5e version. I'm really not a fan of them making Divine Smite into a spell and all the restrictions that come with that. Paladin was hands down one of the best designed classes in 5e, if not THE best designed class, and being able to "go nova" with smites was a huge part of the fun and flavor of playing Paladin. I think there are some things I'll retroactively implement from the 2024 changes, and apply them to the 5e Paladin in my campaigns going forward. Namely the changes to healing spells and Lay on Hands. Healing always kinda sucked and wasn't viable enough in 5e for me, so having Cure Wounds and Healing Word be 2d8+mod and 2d4+mod respectively makes a lot of sense. And Lay on Hands as a bonus action means that it's actually viable for Paladins to use it in combat, which I also like. Honestly, that's probably gonna be what I do for most of the 2024 changes. I'll just take the changes I like and apply them to the 5e versions going forward, not gonna waste my money on buying the new books. A lot of the changes were stuff that I, and many people, had already been house-ruling for years anyway.
Oh gosh i havent watched for months and months... Is there any video or audio way to get caught up on C3 that isnt the Dani youtube shorts, to liaten to while im at work? I love Dani but those are too short for all the nuance per episode.
you have C3 Abridged. In UA-cam it's kinda going slow, in Beacon has way more episodes right now. Abridged shortens every episode down to 1 hour only, I'm using that to catch up

I really hate clickbait thumbnails and video titles. The title Critical Role Downfall makes it down that Critical Role is dying out like roosterteeth did. This just shows a lack of creativity from this channel. This title also creates negativity about critical role and is disrespectful to CR and it's fans. A better title would be something like... News on Critical Role's upcoming Downfall arc. This bring excitement and postive energy to critical role and to this channel. Going after the low hanging fruit titles just sours people's opinion on the news that is being given. I know negative sounded titles generates more views on news that is actually positve. CR is about bringing positive to the world, and seeing titles like this does the opposite. What is really sad is that this channels does an amazing job at bringing us tabletop news, it is just sad what they are doing to generate views using low hanging tactics. This channel can easly step up the challenge to use more accurate thumbnails and titles. But uea if a company is doing bad stuff report it and not sugercoat it. A negative sounded title and thumbnail should be used on videos like "Wizards was caught again using AI generated art." "Wizards sent the Pinkertons to a person's home."
I tried watching EXU:C two times, but hearing Brennan start every sentence with "um" made me not want to see it- So hopefully it will feel like he is more prepared this time round.

I remain unconvinced, but hopeful, that a 2014 subclass could be at the same table with other 2024 PCs and 2024 rules without some DM gymnastics.
Assassin requires surprise rules which are totally different in the 2024 rules

Critters get a month of flashbacks that will try to break the party's faith in the gods. Downfall has a lot to live up to after Calamity.
