Oh! As some have pointed out. I HAVE heard Dave Lombardo prior to this!
'War Inside My Head' | ua-cam.com/video/3wupFmxHAys/v-deo.html
Andrew listen ''Hostage to Heaven'' by Grip Inc.ua-cam.com/video/c_xxabnLqZc/v-deo.html Its Lombardo's band and this track is his top! This is what i call ''Thrash Metal Drumming Seminar Track''. Pleaseee make a reaction video. Greetings from Greece/Hellas!
Top tip, before doing a reaction on someone search for their name on your own channel 😁 - Fun pokes aside - love the channel, great stuff! 👍 - while I'm here, one stand out drummer who amazed was Terry Bozzio when I first saw him in 2002! - He's one of UA-cam's least understood drummers it seems so it'd be cool to get a professional drummers view on him! - Djondon is pretty cool - alas split into two short parts on UA-cam!
There is also a live drum cam of Dave Lombardo playing Slayer's Angel of Death. The song is a fast one (for 1986) but he looks all laid back and comfy. He even shows off a little. ua-cam.com/video/ManyDSIC8fQ/v-deo.html
Catch Dave with Mr Bungle! They have live stuff from last year on here that’s just killer!!! Mike Patton is crazy good vocals and there’s even one of the dudes from Pantera on guitar. See if you can find the blooper, lol!!! Dave misses a fill one time and Mike just lost it 😆
ua-cam.com/video/ManyDSIC8fQ/v-deo.html . . Dave cam on angel of death . Slayer 🤘
Dave Lombardo is a beast!! He's an old school punk rock fan and you can def hear it in his style. That drumming style is what gave Slayer their sound and why they sounded like no one else.
Modern Metal drummers ( and even late era Punk drummers) no longer employ a proper D-Beat. Between the technique evolving into a blast beat and the fact that triggers cannot pick up on "ghost" notes involved we may never hear it again.
@@Guppusmaximus
Modern metal drummers are lame.
He really is a punk drummer that can throw in some double bass when he wants. It’s crazy how good he fits and sounds in ST. It’s his element for sure.
Exactly he is a beast nobody like him the power and the rolls and double bass are jus mad.
They strait lifted their sound from Metallica.
You can tell by James’ attitude, smile and the way he looked at the other band members, this was something I’m sure he’d imagined a hundred times - Metallica with Dave Lombardo on the drum throne. As important as Lars is to Metallica, particularly with the business and arranging the songs, he hasn’t been practicing his drumming since probably the late ‘80’s. You can tell by the way he effortlessly pummelled the double bass parts at the end that Dave, who is the same age, give or take as Lars, pounds like he did in the 80’s, and probably better.
I’m sure there is a world where Lars still does his arranging, business stuff, maybe even records, but Dave Lombardo plays live. Dyers Eve as it’s meant to be played!
ua-cam.com/video/-E1OhrLhKL8/v-deo.html
That is a tight performance, and I like that Lars does the breakdown flams, but it’s not the sheer ‘80’s pummel that Dave Lombardo did, or like Lars did back then:
ua-cam.com/video/_yHJBDeshPA/v-deo.html
First off, Love Lars. He is the Ace Frehley of drums....technically not great but influenced a whole generation of players. That said, it is no secret that Lombardo is a significantly better drummer than Lars technically speaking. There has to be a massive part of James that realized how much better this "feels" to play with Lombardo (even unrehearsed and not completely knowing the song). For James to finally be able to follow the drummer and trust that tempo and transitions will be perfect. As a guitarist who has played with good and bad drummers, I know from experience that this is not a small thing at all. Again, love Lars but damn....it's hard to not wonder, what if????
After The Black album id erase everything if you tell me that they will record one album with Dave or play live with Dave,i respect Lars and like his drumming on the older stuff ..but now i think its just inner respect that makes him stay
Yeah, I think any talented drummer would do for James to be honest, but Lars has got that band by the balls. They're stuck with him.
I was at the show, it was the Download festival in the UK, Lars was ill and they decided to do the show regardless as Metallica was headlining and there was a massive crowd. Dave, Joey and Lars' drum tech each played a couple of songs. It was by far the best Metallica gig I've ever been to. They only delayed the start of the set by about about an hour while all the stand in drummers were rehearsing back stage before it kicked off.
Awesome Marius. Thanks 🙏
Me too. I loved Joey playing Creeping Death.
I was there too my first download festival of many .. my friend was a huge metallica fan and Lars was his favorite drummer .. so he was ecstatic and gutted at the same time 😅
That's epic. I could see the lack of practicing. But Metallica couldn't hang with Lombardo Flat out
The intro is Lars on drums because it's from the album. You can tell when the band kicks in when the guitar comes in louder with the fast galloping part.
Metallica never sounded better!
Lombardo is my all time favorite metal drummer. His drumming on the South of heaven-album is outstanding. It doesn't sound like any other thrash metal drummer I've heard.
As much I love single bass by Nicko Mcbrain, totally agree with you. Best metal drummer ever!
Really insane double bass he does that he goes on forever
Dave Lombardo is one of the best speed drummers ever that was a privilege for James hetfield to get to play with him. Some of that stuff he does during that song Lars couldn't even touch it.
Some of the stuff? Dave is a professional drummer - Lars is no better than I am!
Dave walked the dog with them! KEEP UP IF YOU CAN GUYS!!! They all picked up the pace and can tell they loved it
Exactly this
They didnt keep up tho
@@dejugulators Trujillo sure did!
He was definitely on the edge of the beat. Especially at the end.
This is mere child's play for Lombardo!
Dave one of the few drummers on the planet that has to slow down to play Metallica stuff :D
You should check out Eugene Rybachenko (last name may be misspelled) covering Lux Æterna.
I was at this show and it is by far the best, and most energeticI, I’ve ever heard Metallica sound. I got a bit overexcited when I realised Dave was going to be playing for them. I’ll never forget it.
Dave Lombardo is a beast, especially his stuff with Suicidal Tendencies, there are some crazy good videos of him playing ST songs on UA-cam
Lombardo had actually recorded Battery for a compilation album (Metallic Assault) released in 2001 (with Trujillo on bass) so he was actually well aware of how to play it...
Oh right! Awesome
Now that's what I call a "RECHARGED BATTERY".. 😁 .. he's hittin' so hard it's like "ASSAULT AND BATTERY" - 😉 -
...
James at 11:28 "I'm tellin' ya we feel better than ever!" ...... yeah, I wonder why! 🤔
Probably said that in almost every gig that year.
Andy, fun fact for you. instrumental intro is played from the original CD, so that's why you've propably heared this Lars vibe :D
oh yes ! it shows so much....and the sound difference after the intro production/capture wise proves it !
"Is this part of the song?", no, but it should be! Dave Lombardo put some Slayervibes into this... But the twinkick blasts are so fast an sick...
Killed it! 🔥
It’s part of a song, there’s a drum break before the 3rd pre chorus
@@WishMount not in this speed or ferocity...
The opening sound, is a back track
Lars has had a bunch of stand ins over the years. And basically everyone wiped the floor with him, including his own drum tech.
"Yeh-heahhh" is a song lyric for James! Kinda like a rapper's "uhhh" between bars. All I can come up with! 🤣
LOL
The night that Lars almost got fired...
HAHAHA! I was just looking to see if someone else said it....LOL
Good thing he's a founding member...he'd probably not have a job when he came back LOL...
(apparently being a founding member doesn't always mean anything RIP JJ)
You're not wrong about these guys having fun playing with Metallica. But you are under-estimating how much fun Metallica is having playing with these guys. Not trying to be a jerk, but both are major upgrades over Lars. And in Dave's case, just as accomplished as Metallica, at least within the metal community. If there's one thing Slayer had a clear advantage of over Metallica, it was drumming. Lombardo is on the mount Rushmore of metal drummers. Can't wait till you cover more of him. Here's my suggestion: "Hostage to Heaven", by his post Slayer band, Grip Inc.
I'm sorry to say this but Lars can't hold a candle to Dave Lombardo he is so much superior to Lars period end of story listen to some slayer reign in blood their early stuff..
Not being a jerk. I was honestly sitting here thinking, wait, does the original sound this good?
In addition to all this, and in Lars' defense, I guess you could say, he sounds A LOT better now than he has in probably my lifetime. They've slowed things down, might even be playing to a click now? Either, you can tell that Lars spent the pandemic actually practicing drums, and the band is sounding loads better because of it.
The first 4 albums would like a word... Lars arranged all the music and is the buisness mind... That's where their #1
@@fastfiddler1625 I'd hate to say the original probably didn't sound this good! All be it was good for it's time when it came out but compared to Slayer there are no comparison!
Please do Slayer 'War Ensemble' live in sofia 2010... one of the last shows with Jeff Hanneman ( and the original lineup w/ Dave Lombardo) whom to many was the soul of Slayer.
He passed away in 2013 at age 49.
I Agree, probably the best live version of WAR ENSEMBLE!!
Yup I'm on it!
Ohhhhhhhhhh that was a pretty good video. I forgot about that one.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned it already but that classic Lars sound on Battery was because it was the intro track then the main riff kicks in and you can tell it's Dave on drums.
Yes I found out afterward!
If my memory serves me right, Dave Lombardo was considered the fastest double bass player in the world at one point. Slayer is part of big 4 for a reason.
"Godfather of double bass"
Slayer isn’t slayer without Dave, bospath tried to fill the void, but it didn’t sound right, hopefully one day he will be rocking with his former bandmates
Slayer is the 'Big Four'.
7:34 Dave didn't make a mistake there. He was about to play the breakdown, as it was played on the original record. But at that point Metallica had dropped playing the breakdown section on live shows, hence the abrupt pause.
Rob joined in 2001.
Also, that middle part is an actual 4 measure stop, then drums go to mid tempo 8 measures before ramming back into the thrash for the solos.... I think Dave was overly excited and just completely forgot. He came in so frkn fast at the beginning, was a mess for a couple seconds there til the axemen adjusted their tempos lol. Still, insanely awesome for no prior rehearsals !
Hey Drumeo, we need Lombardo to come do a day of filming. a session and some lessons. he is a more well rounded drummer than most people realize.
That bit at 9:45 is Dave actually playing the part _correctly_ - the rest of Metallica is so used to Lars dropping a beat there that they don't know what to do when Dave actually plays the part right.
Lars' drums had never been played that quick! Lombardo was a machine... As you said he didn't know all the little "live tweeks" like where they do the mid song pause and talk to the crowd, but killer. Glad to say I was there
This concert was truly one night only amazing to see Lombardo and Jordison behind the drum set
Being the beast that Dave is, he is clearly playing the proper speed +, and pulling the band along with him. Kirk starts the solo at normal pace but has to make some adjustments to hit those q's.
There's a band from Sacramento called Will Haven that played a legendary gig in Glasgow about 15 years ago where the singer had to fly to Paris because his wife was there and suddenly very very sick. A whole bunch of Scottish singers came along at no notice and filled in on vocals, including the singer from Biffy Clyro. Given the size/profile of WH and the size of the venue (King Tuts) made this achievement all the more impressive!
I'm sure the wife of one of them from Biffy, is a teacher at Auchinleck Academy in Ayrshire.
On that tour a similar thing happened when they played TJ’s at Newport. As an aside, I bought my El Diablo cd and a hoody from Grady himself when they supported the Deftones in 1998 at Cardiff Uni.
@@roscopervis Was that the tour with Incubus supporting too? One of my lifelong regrets not getting to see that show! I lived in the Highlands at the time and at 19, driving to the big smoke of Glasgow seemed like an impossibility!
I met WH in Aberdeen probably the year later and have a bunch of signed shit. One of the few bands I go out of my way to see every single time they're here now!
No, Crowbar was the other main band on the tour I remember. The bands and some local bands singers helped in Grady’s absence. I don’t want to sound like Danny from Withnail and I, but I have a story about Incubus too when they were supporting Korn in 1996 in Bristol. Jonathan Davies was ill and the show was cancelled that day, but as we were all freezing standing outside waiting for news, my buddy and I were talking to some Americans who we thought were part of the crew. Had a really good chat for about an hour or more, even exchanged numbers (pre mobiles), if we were ever in L.A. or they the glamorous Llanelli (!). Turns out it was Brandon and Mike! We didn’t have a clue. Really nice guys.
@@roscopervis no in 98, wasn't it Incubus that played on the deftones show?
I was at that gig. Dave did the first 3 songs and was great, especially his double pedal. But when Joey came out, woah, that was the tightest I've ever heard Metallica who are insanely tight anyway. And the drum tech did fade to black, he was like a carbon copy of Lars. What a gig, one of my favourite Metallica performances ever.
Dave Lombardo is a legend! If you knew Dave you wouldn’t be surprised. He is hands down 1 of the best if not the best metal drummer!
Bare in mind Dave didn't know the songs ,he'd never played them before, he had only ever heard them in passing, and he had less than 3 hours notice .
I was there that day, I can't express the atmosphere when we saw Dave Lombardo drumming in Metallica , it's something many thrash metal fans had fantasised about .
@@trulyunoriginal i remember a member of Slayer (Kerry or Tom) said that they wish they wrote Battery because the song is freaking brutal.
Dave played battery on a compilation album with Robert, he knows the song
Metallica with Dave lombardo sounds like a band with a proper drummer
Lars is perfect for what Metallica needs. And that is someone who supports James riffs without making his drum parts too busy and complicated. Hetfield has often described his guitar playing style as playing drums on guitar. A drummer like Lombardo or any other one except Lars would only get in the way of that with their styles. There are millions of great drummers out there but there are clearly none that fit Metallica better than Lars Ulrich does

Dave Lombardo Is The Inventor of Super Heavy Drumming He's 60 years old right now and Still Kills. I've Sat With Dave and He Hits Hard as do I.
Agree. Their music is complex. D Lombardo knew this song, and he is beast behind the kit. That was special
Got to see him play live with the band Deadcross with Mike Patton!
Dude is a BEAST on the skins!!! 🥁🥁🥁✊✊🏿✊🏽
I heard dave lombardo's style described sounds like always playing with hammers,no matter what he's playing hit it as hard as you can,as fast as you can
Hammering! Yup Craig. For sure
The intro is actually played from the record. The band kicks in when the riff starts. And yes that double pedal part is part of the original recording
Sounds killer!
Dave Lombardo is a fucking LEGEND. SLAYER!!!!!! \m/
You actually did Suicidal Tendencies video War Inside My Head w/ Dave Lombardo on drums. But, check out War Ensamble by Slayer. Dave is killing it!
Thanks for the tip Mika. And yes I did do that ST one! I forgot
Dave is a Fckin BEAST!!! Listen to how good it all sounds!!!
Sounds brilliant
This is exhilarating at cell phone volume; this live had to be best moment of metal ever
YUP
His time is insane. The band can't handle that it's in time.
Doesn't fuking matter, lombardo overplayed and lacked dynamics,
@@Miist3rDuce1metallica couldn't hang with him is what you mean
When you paused the song at the beginning and commented on the drums sounding “very Lars” that’s because that was just the song intro played through the PA, there was no playing an instrument at that point
This is my favourite version of Metallica playing Battery. Lombardo gets settled and just gives it the onion.
Andrew you should do some comedy bits because you make me laugh quite a lot but that intro was so dry and juicy simultaneously hahahaha
HAHA! Thanks Justin
@3:16 That's the intro of Battery, and the intro is played from the studio CD. The band only actually starts playing when the guitars start around 3:53
I was there that night , Dave Lombardo, Joey Jordison saved Metallica’s asses they were headlining Download and arrived hours late Lars was in hospital ( apparently) . Joey played pretty much the entire set
Dave like "keep up guys"
There is a multicam version of the whole concert put out by Metallica. These fill in drummers all know Metallica's music and play this type of music anyway. Lombardo was the original Slayer drummer
I like how the band came in early on the 3rd verse cuz they're used to Lars going LUDICROUS SPEED on his fills.
Could you imagine putting yourself in Dave's shoes? Arguably the biggest metal band of all time need you to open their set?! Holy cow most drummers would have a heart attack
Slayer better than Mettalica. And Slayer more melodic.
I think the drum kit wanted to go home with Dave.
Wish I could witness this live some day lol
hey this goes back to the old adage of "always learn the songs of the bands you are touring with". that goes for the crew / roadies /techs and for the opening bands when they get a break to tour /' open with a Big band. You never know when they opportunity will arise and it will be your time to shine.
so many musicians got their big break, by filling in last minute when a headliner suddenly couldn't perform. thats your opportunity to say "yeah I know the songs. I'll play"!
A college friend lost his drumming job in his band when he couldn't play an important gig, and last minute the girlfriend of the sound guy said she knew all the songs, she played the gig. 3 months later they got a record deal because of that gig, they kept the girl and fired his ass.
Actually Dave had to learn the songs from scratch before the show---he likely never played a Metallica song in his life, and nobody knew Lars would get sick. That's why he left and Joey came in---he had to go backstage and learn more songs. But Joey, who grew up playing Metallica, was so good and knew all the songs, there was no reason to force Dave to go back and learn new songs every 2 songs in the set.
Daves a monster. Totally unreal.
Dave did a version of Battery for a tribute compilation album. The bassist for this version... Robert Trujillo.
Lombardo has some killer fills on his tunes. Absolute beast!
Dave lombardo has been my favorite drummer for like 3 decades. The Godfather of the double bass drums. The man who set the bar high. I love him.
i dont hate Metallica, im just disappointed in Lars lack of respect, lack of interest, for what he does. he may write, he may rehearse, but he admits he doesnt care, and doesnt practice ON HIS OWN. Dave cares and it shows in his playing. and (RIP) Joey cared too. if Lars has some sort of physical limitation and hes trying to "soldier on" maybe he should consider other things like FFDPs original drummer did. but if theres nothing otherwise wrong with him, he needs to show some respect, get better, and more consistent. their fans deserve it, and so does the rest of the band.
BOOM. Well said!
It's like the shit he invents is so sick and unlike anything else, you'd think he'd want to keep it true.
he never was a good drummer but back in their heyday he just compensated for that with lots of heart and practice. he barely reached the level he needed and it was always a big stretch and lots of effort and as he grows old he just't have that fire anymore and since he can't rely on his skill, that's basically why have have what we have now. it's not gonna change. Lombardo here has shown what somebody with real drum skill can do with this song, even in his old age nowadays he could do it just the same.
@@hazardeur are you high? ua-cam.com/video/_yHJBDeshPA/v-deo.html
@@canatolakhoemini6728 practiced today trying to get better. he hasnt. oh and that video too shows his lack of consistency, terrible posture, and lack of efficiency in his playing. ty for the example.
My guess on what Dave was thinking about before and after, was "dude.. I'm stoked to play these tunes with my OG buddies", and after it was "hell yeah... that was a rush". Dave and Metallica go back to the early 80s together. This was just a jam fest for him. Joey on the other hand, wasn't part of that scene, but he was an extremely seasoned drummer by this time. I'm sure he wasn't nervous. However... I think the nostalgic feeling that Dave got wasn't shared the same by Joey. Joey was probably more star struck by it than Dave was.
Oh right! I didn't know about the earlier connections between Dave and the band. Thanks!
Yeah that thrash scene in San Francisco was somewhat incestuous, Hammett came from Exodus, Mustaine formed megadeth and had Kerry king from slayer for a while. This is ~1982 onwards. Hammett talks about the scene in his Gibson interview he did recently, highly recommended watching.
Lombardo is killing it, you can hear him hitting the drums much harder, even the hi-hats, than Lars. If you listen closely, though, you'll notice that Dave misses the turnaround tom fills on the chorus, but quickly recovers, every single time. 😂
Lombardo's greatness is in that whatever speed he plays the drums their sound does not overlap, his timing is beyond impeccable and he makes it all look easy,He is in my mind the best metal drummer of our generation and proves it again and again in every recording and performance,he has collaborated and shined with, to name but a few,Salyer, testament, grip inc, Mr bungle, dead cross,PHILM, suicidal tendencies and more.
Can't wait to hear more Yuval!
Your editing had me rolling. A very well placed Wilhelm scream.
Edit: Dave Lombardo is a much better drummer than Lars. That doesn't take anything away from Lars, he has his place, but Dave is an infinitely better thrash drummer. I would suggest Dave's work with Slayer and Grip Inc. Specifically Ghosts of War and Heretic War Chant, respectively.
I love Dave, he is literally one of the nicest dudes I have ever met
The rest of the band got behind him at the end. He nailed it! Kirk fucks up the timing of that solo quite often.
Dave Lombardo Is A King.
Ha! James sounded a bit tired towards the end of Battery! lol
All Hail the Great Dave Lombardo!!!
Willard
They couldn't keep up dave played at the right speed
I was in the crowd for this, absolute treat with Dave and Joey
David Is a Good friend of Mine. He Taught Me Super Heavy 2 Kick Drum thing.
Absolutely amazing!🌹
Yes Amanda!
Battery is the neighbourhood of San Francisco that all the Bay Area thrash bands lived, worked and played. James wrote the lyrics when the band decided to relocate to LA after they signed with Elektra Records. The shot of the band on the couch on the back of the Master of Puppets album was in the house they rented in Battery.
Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Death Angel and Metallica were known as the Bay Area Bashers long before there was a Big 4.
Dave Lombardo is a drumming god 🤘🤘
Fun to watch you discover new playings that I've just discovered myself over last few years. Slayer was too harsh back in day for me.Thank you✌
Yup me too Brooke!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums you need to check out seasons in the abyss for lambardo. Its a masterpiece in every way
Lars is a good drummer. Then you have Joey tearing it up. Then you have The Godfather of the double bass with Dave Lombardo.
This being one of the fastest songs they do is a yawn and a cup of coffee for Dave. I don’t know if you caught all of the extras he put in there just to have something to do to say it lightly.
Like someone said earlier, do “War Ensemble” by Slayer drum cam:
ua-cam.com/video/3ivOfkqFmxg/v-deo.html
I'd like to hear Dave do Fight Fire With Fire.
btw, you have done Lombardo 9 months ago with Suicidal Tendencies. And Trujillo was the bass player that in the past... check out Lombardo with Mike Patton with Deadcross, or Fantomas and recently with Mr. Bungle too! ..new Bungle lineup Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, Scott Ian (Anthrax) and Dave Lombardo.. Lombardo has now been the trusty drummer of General Patton in many projects!
...I made a request in that earlier videos comments of Kuoppis from Finland. Still holding the torch for it:

Metallica have never sound so tight before
It's sounds like Lars kit in the start , because it's INTRO.....Lombardo starts playing at 3:57.
This was when Dave was like…. Keep up with me please.
LOL Keith!
They couldn't it killed James and kirk

Up until the guitars kick in it's a tape playing the album intro of the song. That's why it sounds Lars-y.
I would love to see Metallica live with 66Samus and Eloy Casagrande some day
Eloy would be crazy HAHA
Nobody hates Metallica, we just hate the new stuff (i.e. anything after And Justice for All).
This was the first festival I ever went to. What a baptism!! Feel EXTREMELY privileged to have seen this live🙏
Dave Lombardo is one of the best metal drummers for me.
Cool to see Dave covering for Metallica, don't think Lars could keep up with Slayer very well if the roles were reversed but it would've taken a lot for Dave to miss a Slayer show!
Robert Trujillo's happiest day as a bass player... 🤣
Andy Metallica starts this song and blackened live with actual studio samples. So that Lars drum sound you point out in the beginning is indeed lars.. from 1986...
Thanks Justin!
Lombardo is one of the most personable drummers out there. He's also one of the best ever. He was one of the trendsetters leading up to today's blast beats and metal drumming that legends like Jordison have built upon.
To be fair to the cameraman, he was in a moshpit at a Metallica gig, soooooo...
🤣👌
He was chasing the rest of the band lie a madman with an axe. You can almost hear they´re not used to this kind of energy and this kind of tempo.
Smashed it!
Technically Dave’s obviously great, but I consider him a feel drummer. His feel is unmistakable. He leads with his left like Ringo BTW. Very musical. Spill The Blood is in my top 5
You just HAVE to watch Lombardo on Angel Of Death with Portnoy behind the scene 🤘 Lombardo is insane on this masterpiece...
