Hey nice video Mark. Got a question, you know how you were breaking down Dragon balls characters. I was wondering if you can do the same thing for Naruto's characters? Especially Naruto himself Itachi, Madara, and Etc??? Since you now finished the first two series? And maybe even Review The Naruto movies like you did Dragonball?
To be fair, it wasn't Toei's animators who tried copyrighting him. It was the corporate big wigs who think "Oh, you used two seconds of a clip of something we own that appears in a free video instead of just telling people to pay to watch the entire episode you took the clip from? Clearly, you're a dirty pirate that's stealing our content and making it available for free. There's literally no other possible answer." I'm sure that the animators, who probably have their own separate grievances with the company, are much more decent and happy to do these redraws for these videos.
This is by far my favorite series you have. It's so much fun seeing how you, Trev, Ajay and Editor-san blast through these drawings, using all kinds of interesting art styles, and showing different techniques used by the animators. I get to see cool drawings AND learn more about animation and art. As someone who is a lazy wannabe artist and animator, it really makes me want to jump back into drawing, and taking it more seriously.
Trev has all the skill i wish i had, i cant fathom how many years of training he's undergone to get to the power level he has, great work everyone else too and take care of yourself Ajay, drawing with a mouse is not easy
Honestly, I have one nitpick with Trev’s first Gohan image and that’s the change from the under lighting to the more overhead back lighting. I feel like it would look better with the original lighting.
I'm actually a pretty big fan of Tate's work. I love the fluidity of the character's movements. And specifically in the MUI fight with Jiren, it does a fantastic job at expressing how natural it is for Goku to dodge. As a side note, both Gamma's designs have grown on me more than I thought they would
You all did great work, but to comment on the film's itself: Itbetter then a LOT of other CGI anime, but it's still doing stuff to limit how smooth it is to replicate 2d animation, and I wish it didn't even if it's not as bad as others: Some CGI anime will cut directly between the 3d keyframes, rather then interpolating between them (which 3d software does automatically normally), and (I think DBS:SH is just doing this will cut out every 2 or 3 frames of movement to match how anime is often down on twos/threes. The result is it looking choppy even if to a lesser extent here. That CGI can do buttery smooth on ones animation at no extra cost is one of it's advantages and I think we'd be much better off if that was embraced. You can still do stuff like cel shading or 2d drawn overlays with smears to match the art style of 2d: That looks great! I think a good example of how I wish 3d anime tended to look is, ironically, not even an anime: It's Cyberconnect 2's work on the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Games, Asura's Wrath, or to a lesser extent on DBZ kakkarot. The QTE sequences and cutscenes in those games look INCREDIBLE and super smooth because everything is moving on ones, and the cel shading, 2d smear overlays, and effects work is top notch, with the action and fights themselves given insane coregraphy worthy of a Sakugabooru upload. CC2 even HAS made anime shorts using their game engine, such as one they did in a competition against Studio Kara. As an anime example, i'd point to Precure's EDs, which I believe isn't doing any of the frame cutting I mentioned above, or if it is doing it, it's impossible to tell for me (DBFZ is a game but also does it in a way that I think works perfectly, aside from some of the idle animations where the cut frames are distracting).
Agreed, Dragon Ball FighterZ is a good example where they stretch and deform the models to match some of the perspectives in traditional drawin animation which isn't technically accurate.
You earn points for acknowledging the Ultimate Ninja Storm games. Storm 3 and Storm 4 have become some of my favorite games of all time, and I'm happy that someone else acknowledges their existence.
super fucking impressed with editor-san's kanzenban, the modern style would've been nice to see, but the kanzenban shading added so much to it my god, amazing job dude if you see this
It's not even about technology advancing. It's about an art form being lost. It's already happened in the west... shows like Harlequin don't even use squash and stretch or foreshortening or impact frames in it's most intense fights, and hand-drawn animation is relegated to stilted "adult" cartoons, with cgi used predominantly for children's cartoons. We're probably two decades away from a shift like this happening in Japan... but the issue with promoting CGI animation in Japan is that, inevitably, an art form will eventually be lost.
@@viggetsu absolutely not. It would be way too time consuming. No matter how good the cg models look, cg animation tends to take more time than hand-drawn animation (if you want it to look good). There's a reason that cg anime series usually don't do more than 12 episodes without a break.
@@viggetsu yeah This movie from the beginning felt like something closer to a side project with it's CGI, focus on slice of life, focus on Gohan and Piccolo, completely different staff and lack of marketing for a long time So there's a chance that the "main team" is working on the 2nd season of DBS I'm still really excited for the movie tho
Crazy how the redraws all look better than the original, almost makes you wonder why after such a beautiful movie like DBS Broly they were just like fuck it let’s do CGI
Because Morishita the chairman of Toei wanted a CG DB movie even before Super was a thing in 2015 and due to their 2D inhouse staff having their hands full with other things.
part of it is that Super Hero started production before Broly released so this decision may have been made before they saw the response to Broly's animation.
I absolutely _adore_ Maeda's artstyle and it's so nice seeing some of these shots in just that style. Especially in OG Dragon Ball it gave me major Studio Ghibli vibes, a style that's also fantastic in its own way.
I would have added a third lighter tone of shading to the Goten and Trunks drawing. Its one of the biggest differences in GT. Even when I was little I remember all the characters looking Shiny lol
I hope if you guys do more of these we get some love to Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. We got an image based on GT here, but I would love to see more, as I feel that Nakatsuru is kind of treated like the black sheep despite his significance to the franchise and even other Toriyama centric projects.
@@BlueEyes274 That’s right! Nakatsuru was also the character designer on the first three Digimon series, which are considered the most iconic. He also directed a Dr. Slump reboot anime, and did a TON of design work for Dragon Ball, Dragon Quest, and even Chrono Trigger promotional material.
It absolutely grinds my gears that Gotenks' hair color doesn't match Trunks in this film. I'm indifferent on whether it's Blue or Purple but the least they could've done is match Gotenks to the new color. It was already bad enough in the Goku Black arc where we had Future Trunks w/ Blue hair and kid Trunks with purple.
