Paradise Valley is one of my top albums. I overplayed the fuck out of that album back in college. He is so gifted that even his least favorites are masterful.

Honestly though I’d say keep all of them except Sob Rock if I had to take all but one to a desert island I think John knows that it’s not everyone’s favorite either. Love all of them anyway and I’m surprised how much John is aware and open about how an album of his is received. I’m almost certain he is no stranger to looking at his subreddit.

I don’t think it’s bad for acting the way it does, but I think John said something to the effect of it being designed to sound like music from that era to act as a comfort zone for him during the pandemic
Paradise Valley is a great album. And I love the message behind Who You Love. I used to find the giggle at the end a little cheesy. But I also like cheesy, lol. It kind of reminds me of my husband and I, just because on paper no one would imagine us together. But the heart wants what the heart wants, right? I relate to SOB ROCK being comforting. One of my best friends and I always listen to 80s and some early 90s music when we need a good dose of teenage nostalgia or comfort. Especially the ballads, lol.
Very interesting that he'd say Paradise Valley. Wasn't expecting that. To me, Paradise Valley was a perfect compliment to Born and Raised. I remember B&R as a bit dark and depressing honestly, where as Paradise Valley I found much brighter and optimistic. Born was a shift in his style that was subdued and tonally different but Paradise felt like the tone was brighter and more at peace than the darker tones of Born. The one I expected him to say was Battle Studies because that would be mine but I understand going through things in music and certain songs and albums mean more and weigh on you different.

It's really a terrible thing to ask a musician what album is their least favorite because it can alienate other fans. I have been on the musical ride since Heavier Things, so I don't take offense for his opinions in hindsight about them.

Ive loved JM since I first heard him back in 2003. Always been a lifer. I dont think Ive ever listened to Paradise Valley after the first time I ever heard it, and I have never wanted to go back to it. It was such a boring, uninspired, flyover record. It makes all the sense that it was rushed and really a throwaway record because thats exactly what it sounded like. Thats not even a dig at John, sometimes you have to mail-in some stuff at work just to get to the weekend. We all do it.
John Mayer will one day probably in 20 years do a record with all Frank Sinatra songs. He will outsell all the other rockers turned crooners including Rod Stewart, Brian Ferry and Paul McCartney. I would bet he already has the songs he would do... He just needs a touch more of the grey to get there.
A bluesy holiday album is on my JM wishlist. So glad to hear he's open to doing one! 🎶🎄🎶
