I'm always looking forward for new content on your channel Matt. Very well explained and demonstrated as always. If I lived by your facility, I would never go home! From the looks of your walls, things are going well for you, which is deserving of someone like yourself. As always, my best to you and the future of Golf Liberty.
Handle dragging is generally created from too much force pushing across the shaft; this was theorized a long time ago and now measured/calculated by Michael Jacobs and Jacobs 3D. A good drill to feel less force across the shaft and more "free release" are lead arm only pitches and chip shots with like a PW as the lowest lofted club. Gap, sand, lob work well too.
Another feel I’ve heard, is feel like you’re using your lead tricep in the downswing. I think this blends perfectly with the elbow feel in this video and makes for stable arm structure.
Great stuff Matt glad to see you posting again your passion, knowledge and willingness to share comes across in spades. IMO your golf channel is one of the most enjoyable on UA-cam . Keep em coming😎😎😎
I just noticed the lofted knuckler you mentioned and thought I was flipping. I also noticed I come super steep with that flip, hit high in the face, and get that high trajectory. Massive excavation of the turf. This move will certainly help
Something I struggle with and really glad to see some benefits from change as well as a few really relateable/practical ways to remedy it myself unlike many other tips/examples that don't apply to what I tend to do. Thank you good sir (as always).
i always wondered if the action of the lead arm that you are showing is more of a result of the the right arm straightening and making the club and arm turn over.
good video and info. i have a similar problem and i hit a low ball and get some pulls also. i can hit my 5 iron 170yds which is good for me but the ball only goes 20ft. off the ground. i'm gonna work on it, thnx.
I really struggle with this on full swings with short irons. It’s fine with 5/6/7 irons and hybrids/driver. But on full swings with 8/9/pw I push my lead arm forward and slice my shot. I’ll be trying your tips. 🤞
I struggle with this. Its great to do with full wedges and short irons but it KILLS my long clubs. I did fix my chipping after years of stubs by learning to use the bounce effectively. Will definitely give this a shot.
Hi Matt, if you reflect on your time with Shawn C wonder if the throwing tasks for example can help the average golfer quite a bit with the lead arm release. Do you use similar tasks with your students much?
At least you don't have chicken arms like I did. I somehow hit decent shots without me realising I was doing it. I've had 2 lessons now with ex tour pro Paul Powell and he just fixed it and had me swinging like you want to as well. First time I felt and heard real compression 👌🏻 he had me take a tiny backswing not even hip high and follow through releasing the wrists. Eventually a half and 3/4 swing. I practiced a bit indoors with foam balls and just got out to the range today to drill it in even better. Swing feels really good now.
Do you feel like you have to rotate your upper body more to get that feeling with the lead elbow? Just did some practice swings and really felt like my upper body needed to rotate a lot to get that feeling of elbow down.
This is the exact issue that I am currently facing with my swing. I used to have a lot of lateral motion in my downswing (pushing my hips toward the target) and I forced myself to release the wrist/club to time the impact which helped the ball launch in the air. However, after going through some swing fixes, I eliminated the lateral movement in the downswing and instead rotate properly. However, this has caused me to drag the handle excessively without releasing the club and I generate too much compression causing lower launch and ball flight. My 7-iron (93~97 mph swing speed) at 34 degrees of loft launches at 11~13 degrees and my 8-degree TSR3 driver (114~118 mph cruising swing speed) launches the ball at around 6~8 degrees even with 1~1.5 degrees of hitting up on the ball... I resolved the low launch by replacing my longer irons with hybrids but I am still struggling to get the ball in the air with my driver... Hopefully, I can utilize the tips in this video to fix my swing!
just curious matt, if you look at scottie and brysons swing, it looks like they dont release the club fully with the elbow of the lead hand supinating, whats your thoughts on their release pattern?
Hi Matt really love the feel of the crease of the left elbow up ( right handed player) and using the band for a feel. Question I have to much bend in trail arm as well do you think this would work in my right arm my elbow point behind me instead of down, thank You
Thank you for the response played yesterday in the cold and my ball striking was really good. Such a simple thought to keep crease of left elbow up I'm going to start working on right as well great video
This is my exact issue. With irons I can compensate but my ball flight is really low. With driver, I can't get the face closed and I block hard to the right. Going to try this.
I've been working on this as well and the thought that is working for me, and making a massive difference with my driver, is that my lead hand thumb should be pointed at the sky when the club is pointing at my target. When I manage to do it properly I'm bombing drives.
Any advice for better player who maybe releases a little soon and has a good amount of dynamic loft at impact? Static loft 7i:32* and dynamic is around 30*
Good stuff! Has there ever been any intention on reducing the axis tilt away from the target coming down? I know you mentioned some difficulty with dynamic loft in a recent video too. It seems like the handle drag and lead arm staying in more internal rotation through the follow through is more of a compensation in trying not to hit over draws due to lateral motion of pelvis toward the target/trail side bend tilting the upper body back, lack of pelvis rotation through impact? Or am I completely off base? To me, it would make sense that with the seemingly greater amount of tilt of upper axis away from target in the downswing that 'handle drag' would be needed to get low point forward to not hit it fat. Regardless, Ian is great and I really like his teaching as well.
will need to work on my rotation as well for sure, a lot of extension and pull back with my rib cage in the backswing puts me in a difficult spot in the downswing
I think it's funnier that Matt started doing righty as an experiment to demonstrate a rookie, and he started hitting it further and straighter than I did with my correct right hand immediately.... and I'd been golfing for 5 years
Me too. I'm trying to get the lead wrist into extension past impact, one handed swings with a frisbee type action seem to help. Early days but I'm making progress.
It is worth comparing this video with the video by Stuart Cartwright at Good Golf Coaching channel on the brake phase of the swing. Different approaches to the same issue, I prefer Stuart's explanation - but he is my coach so I am biased!
Matt might get assassinated by the golf illuminati for this video. This is the golden secret I think. Do this right and all of the “lag” “shallowing” “positions” happen naturally

I’m loving the consistent content being uploaded. Keep it up!
I struggle with this too. Looking forward to trying these drills at the range. Thanks Matt!
This has been killing Me ,Drag handle through and push or pull irons right or toe Shank ! Really timely ,thank You!❤️

I’m reminded of John Daily’s one handed chip and pitch warm up. He always warms up with one handed wedge swings. Try it!

Great content! Always enjoyed how you articulate these subjects. Nice to have yah back.
Great video Matty! Simple and seemingly repeatable to break the old habits of handle dragging!!
Thank you! I’ve given up on driver because of this issue. Excited to work this feel into my swing.
As a lefty I needed this 🎉
Golf, there's always something to work on and improve upon incrementally even for the best ball strikers, thanks Matty👍🍻

missed your content Matty
This video is for me it was always my issue with driver after a few injuries i had to spend almost a whole season forcing a release early to get it
Have similar issues with my swing. Cheers matty excited to try this at the range. Great content as always
You're right this is little talked about. It is my main issue and it is tough to improve!

The old videos with you and Larry do you find if you release your angles quicker you still need to work on lead arm supination?
it's always the basics. I always go back to pitchshots when Im out of sequence or ballooning shots

This is exactly what i need to focus on I am such a high finisher.

You
yes trail elbow down in the backswing would be ideal as well
Thank you for the response played yesterday in the cold and my ball striking was really good. Such a simple thought to keep crease of left elbow up I'm going to start working on right as well great video

Matt, do you feel like this makes your lead arm fold more past impact than it did before?
Awesome video Matt, thank you

I like this feel Matt. Thanks.
Struggled between dragging the handle and flipping for ages, I feel that this has totally clicked in my mind
ditto.
I am 💯 a knuckle dragger.

wow. i've never seen this talked about before. something i really need to put to the test as i know i do this incorrectly.
Funny how I feel like your videos have been targeting my personal golf game... get out of my head, Matt.
Literally this 😂 I’ve been working on this today lol

What cameras are you using and what software is that video swing replay ?
Swing Catalyst
I have the opposite issue… trying to think about what the equivalent cue would be 🧐
Got some née drills for winter
Thanks Matt

This immediately clicked when you described my chip and sand shots to a tee, rehearsing this immediately
Always struggled with this, driver doesn't go far but it does straight and low
Stop draggin my, stop draggin my, stop draggin my handle around. 🎶
Yay! A lefty!
that full 7 iron shot was a thing of beauty
What what what more content 🎉
Bravo❤
In the beginning you show that Dragging is Flipping... aren't they the opposite?
I call it my lazy swing miss. And it can be so frustrating. Drag I too long and it's weak and low
It looks like your hands are moving more around your body on the target side. Is this part of the sequence, or, a result of supinating your lead arm?
Looks like the drills Liam Robinson does with a towel.
Matt might get assassinated by the golf illuminati for this video. This is the golden secret I think. Do this right and all of the “lag” “shallowing” “positions” happen naturally
That's very familiar drill.... 🤔 lol
Hmmm, I guess it is possible to go too far either way with these things. Too flippy Vs dragging 🤔
Do all this in less than a second.
