@@Tobstarrilez -- Charlie the speaker is saying that he's in love with his friend Sam not BECAUSE Sam is a boy (like the myth that all gay men are attracted to ALL men), but that he's in love with Sam as a person and his best friend who JUST HAPPENS TO BE a boy. In other words, Sam's gender is irrelevant. Perhaps Charlie is bisexual.

Being in love with a friend hurts. Being in love with a straight friend is even worse.

OKAY BUT AT THE BEGINNING he says Sam's name and HIS BREATH just FALteRs and that HALF A SECOND conveys so much raw emotion. And then Charlie is talking about the library pin and his head just SNAPS up and, almost like a realization, he admits that he loves Sam and you can see that little swallow after he says it and yo can just FEEL the fear radiating off of him and he's so SCARED. And when he talks about Sam's parents getting divorced, his eyes are practically tearing up and his smile just FALLS. I have watched this freaking short film way too many times. It is amazing cinematography-wise and the story is so compelling and emotional. The acting is on point. The way all the aspects of the film come together is beautiful. I'm WAY too obsessed with this. I was in love with a guy at high school. He was the most beautiful person I knew. I didn't know I was gay at the time, and I didn't suspect he was either. But I thought he was into me, and I definitely was into him. He once held my hand for a few seconds when we were mucking around in biology. Or did he? Maybe I was just seeing things that I wanted to see. I hope he did hold my hand. At 25 years of age, those few seconds are still one of my most heartfelt memories.

Beautiful film. Beautifully written. Beautifully acted. And so evocative. In 1982 i was in year 12 .... 6th form in those days. I was at an all boy's school in Melbourne and for 4 years i had been so in love with a fellow student. Same year level, same feelings ... everything just the same as this film ... except the language we were learning was German. His name was Mark. He was beautiful. And he wasn't gay ... though he was way ahead of his time. Last day for 6th formers, drinking champagne on the banks of the Yarra i told him. I told him how i adored him. How my heart melted everytime i had seen over the previous four years. He was so kind. So warm. So understanding. So ahead of the time in which we lived. The kindness of his beautiful brown eyes and warmness of his acceptance ... still fills my heart to this day. I saw him once more after that, the following year at the school fete. He smiled. We said 'Hi' and exchanged a few words. I have never seen him since, though very occassionaly over the years i've meet him in my dreams where sit and talk to each other. He was my first passion, my first love. I know nothing else about him or his life, however his initials remain forever emblazoned on my heart: M.R.H.

I just wanted to let you know that coming back from China - where UA-cam is banned - I discovered that the movie is available on Chinese websites (Youku, Tudou, etc.). And got viewers by ten of thousands... I thought you might enjoy to know that you got much more than the present 560.000 viewers... I hope it will keep growing, Wishing all your team great success. One question to Kim Ho: when shall we get a chance to hear or read more from you. You are a very gifted young man. And as a Frenchman, the way you described French language is touching - and you have a very nice accent ! All the best to you and looking forward.

Thank you "The Voice Project" for your very kind reply! I did browse your website. I read all the interviews and dear Kim, allow me respectfully to correct you on one word - even if I am French and English is not my native language. You talk about your performance as a monologue. Monologue is definitely an understatement. What you have achieved is so much more impressive - it is a genuine soliloquy... Probably the most difficult theatrical exercise. Monologues are common, soliloquies are Shakespearean experiences... And that is definitely what makes your performance and writing skills so outstanding.

I was in love with my best friend for 7 years and I never talked to her about it. I’m a bridesmaid at her wedding next month. I’m thankfully over it now, but I remember how painful those years were. When they’re your best friend, you fall so hard because there are no boundaries between you. And then you can’t not love them, no matter what you do. I’m hopeful for Charlie, but also from experience I know how these things tend to go. For anyone living through this now, I’m with you.

Baring one's soul and expressing what one actually feels is a manifestation of true love. No hiding... no shallow platitudes, but a deep understanding and expression of what one is, and what one's inner self is all about. True love.

Dear Kim, you certainly demonstrate a great talent & compassion for your target audience & for anyone who watches this clip who has a heart. In your intro you wanted to reach other young people searching for their own sexuality. gahhhh i love this so much. my school holds a film festival every year and i've been wanting to make a short film about two boys that fall in love. only problem is i don't know where i'd find two guys willing to act gay for each other because all the boys at school are like "no homo man lol" so it's hard...i don't know how to get started.

    • @TheVoicesProject

Hey, thanks for this. Firstly, do you have a script written or is it something you have in mind? Secondly, does your school have a drama department, or a literature teacher who runs drama club? That would be a good place to start asking. Failing that, you could go to a local theatre or drama group - they would be sure to welcome you (don't feel awkward - they are THERE to encourage the next generation of writers/directors/theatre & filmmakers). Also, bear in mind, that actors WANT to be in films, as they are the best way to build a name, get experience, make contacts. You should also maybe contact a local LGBT organisation, particularly that deals with young people, as they might be able to help you on the content if you wanted to discuss that. Hope this helps!

One might think: What could be easier than a monologue? Only one actor reciting some lines someone wrote. Usually someone else, but in this case, written by the actor. That makes it even easier, right? Also, he doesn't have to interact with other actors, so really how much acting skill is required?
I'm not saying that what "one might think" is true. On the contrary, this performance shows that what may sometimes be true isn't always. When a dramatic piece is this powerful, nothing can gainsay that fact. This is one monologue that cannot be dismissed as "just a monologue."
In retrospect, it was brilliant that he starts from his head. That's where almost everyone starts. So it's realistic, and it makes switching to the heart all the more powerful. Really the viewer is as overwhelmed by the switch as the person portrayed is. He can't control what he feels, and neither can the viewer.
I have to say, too, that I'm impressed that TheVoicesProject is still responding to comments on a video published on UA-cam almost 5 years ago. I assumed I had come too late to the party to get a response. So we now have a mutual appreciation, and despite thinking I already have too many subscriptions, I have to subscribe!

Thanks again. Although the project has now finished, the team behind The Language of Love think it's very important to respond to comments on the film, given how personal many people's peoples responses to it have been, and the fact that so many young people find so much in the film that relates to them. You can keep an eye on the work of the team behind The Language of Love over at www.thelanguageoflovefilm.com (and do also check also check out a micro sequel we produced in response to the marriage equality postal vote in Australia at theidoproject.com Thanks again for your kind words about the film. It draws you in and you go through the confusion and angst of the subject matter. This can easily become an iconic literary work for all teens facing such issues, and heaven knows they need to see they are not alone and that their thoughts are normal and not weird...AND FOLLOW YOUR HEART.

Why do I relate to this so much? Of course, I'm a girl, but every thought and experience Charlie has resonates so much with me. The close friendship, the random thoughts leading to a sudden realization, heck, even the French class!
Now, my crush's parents aren't going through divorce or anything, but that doesn't mean I don't worry about her every single day about other stuff. I've managed to (partially) get over her, but then every time I see her face, my little gay heart skips a beat and I get so incredibly happy. I'm screwed. She doesn't like me back. She's still my close friend and it's like nothing ever happened, but it still hurts to know that my fantasies will never come true.

I'm sure you've heard it before- but this story is relatable to SO many LGBT young people. Even me, who is no longer in High School, was transported back just listening to your story. Unlike you- I was too scared to tell my best friend how I felt. Thanks for showing me and the world-- That its ok its ok to be who you are. Even though lgbt people may feel confused internally about their feelings- we know the world is now on our side and will continue to push society into tolerance. All I can say is- BRAVO and Thank You- Happy Valentines Day!
