- As the search for blame continued in the October 2, 1996 crash of Aeroperú Flight 603, a Miami lawyer filed a lawsuit on behalf of some of the passengers and crew. Their target: the manufacturer of the plane, Boeing.

Unbelievable. It was not Boeing to be blamed as it was the man who was on a maintenance routine. Due to his negligence, he was sent to jail.

If anyone was at fault, it was Aeroperu and not Boeing, but i dont think it should be a lawsuit over this. It was an accident caused by a few mistakes. The need for someone to blame is such a messed up thing, unless it was a deliberate action or extreme negletion, which in this case it’s not.
But did they cover it with the duct tape on purpose?
And did they know not to?
@@artyjaycayairlines Off course they did it on purpose, it is important to protect the pitot tubes during maintance. The thing the ground crew forgot was to remove them before flight, even though it says «remove before flight».
@@aa7845 Yes and that’s on the maintance crew, maintance supervisor, the pilots and Aeroperu. But it ain’t criminal, it was a mistake, an accident. My point is that I think it shouldn’t be a lawsuit over this, and at the very least should Boeing be cleared of any wrongdoing and not being involved in it. The guilt the maintance crew must feel is more than enough of a «punishment» and I think the thirst for someone to blame in an accident like this is stupid. Had it been KLM Flight 4805 (Extreme negletion on one person alone (biggest factor in that crash)) or SilkAir Flight 185 (Deliberate action to crash the airplane), I’d completely understand. But in this particular accident the fault lies on multible human beings, who did the same unfortunate mistake, and suing those people is wrong in my opinion.

The ports literally have placardings that say "make sure free and clear before flight" on them. The manual says to uncover them before flight. This is entirely and utterly the airlines fault for criminal negligence, nothing to do with Boeing
Wait yeah what the hell. Nothing wrong with the plane inherently it seems, just an issue of the maintenance team's negligence.
@MT2k While I wouldn't say Boeing was at fault (taping static ports seems to be standard), it doesn't strike me as the safest design.
When you cover a pitot tube, you use a bright orange sock with a red label saying "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT". Perhaps static ports should come with plugs that are bright orange and have the warning label attached. Because it's a plug, not tape, it would also stick out from the aircraft.
That way, a blocked port is easily visible.
It was the person/company painting. If it was aeroperu themselves, they should get fined

This is the most bogus thing I've ever heard. If you do anything to an aircraft that makes it unairworthy is is FAA regulations that you enter it into the log book. These guys were cleaners and have no access to the logbook and should of had a licensed mechanic enter the tape into the log book. Then if a mechanic was involve you would be using the correct tape. These rules are international in scope and don't just apply in the United States. If you want to make your own aviation rules plan to lose your airplane and your life. Don't just blame Boeing every time you crash an aircraft cause they have the most money. What will keep it from happening again unless you start making a logbook entry? If there was an open write up in the log book the captain never would have left the gate until it was cleared by a licensed mechanic. So many people around the world know so little about the business of aviation and when they get hurt because of ignorance they don't know who to blame. This was NOT Boeings fault guys... Period. Glad to see Aero Peru went under bunch of armatures.
