1 decade ago you made this video and it is still as important today as it was back then. Inexpensive ways to not get caught up into name brands and still make it work. Thank you.
We used two pvc tubes on each bike on one of our adventures each holding about 9L of water. The sat upright and mounted onto the rear foot pegs on aluminum plates. To get the smell and taint of the pvc and glue out of them we filled them with water and half a lemon for a couple of days. Worked well. We also used the same sort of bags as what you are using as saddle bags for tank side bags, worked well although they got torn down the stitching which we had to re-stitch with trusty tie wire. :-)

good video that is. love those honda ct110 scooters/bikes. they are still made, and sold here in japan but are stupidly expensive and perhaps thats because they now have a cult following. wouldnt mind swapping my regular modern suzuki scooter (work and back machine) for one like yours. i have a suzuki 650 v twin and thats great but that honda ct110 is so cool. just cant get over how great simple machinery is. thanks for the video.
Great site, I love Oz.. if 110cc postie bikes are next gen why not upgrade a 90 to a 84-85 125M? I'm thinking of doing it with my 1978 6v.. Honda reliability, bolt pattern is compatible, 12v cdi, manual/elec start, hi/lo trans, if you don't like the pull start you can always add a 110 kickstart, change the rear sprocket to whatever and you're good to go. A 110 would be fine for me if I could find one.. not interested in waiting for a Trail 125. Maybe bc they're on backorder and pre-sell for $600 cad over list!
Thanks mate, the bike weighs 100kgs with oil and fuel. It is rated to carry 109kgs. So the total max weight is 209kgs. I weigh 85kgs and all the gear that I'm taking is roughly 60kgs at the most. So that is 145kgs which is 36kgs over the allowable wieght. Remember that the petrol & water drums weigh 20kgs together when full, but I will only fill them fully when needed. I hear that the bikes can carry twice the allowable weight with no problems. Cheers... Mark

they look so cool in black...on the front comfort feet rests...i found the top of engine bar too high, so fit fold up pillion feet rests to the inside of bar just at a height that felt the most comfortable...i also fit a 1 gallon (3.8L) sub auxiliary fuel tank under the rear rack where they mount onto the rear guard assembly..& relocated the toolkit to the rear of rack...my rear saddle bags are deep pvc bicycle ones that hold the world....a plastic milk crate on rear rack carries the dog...with a aly flat top lid on that with space for dog to stick head out...then that can have a top box screwed to it or left flat to carry bigger loads like a swag....a 5L metal army jerry can in one of the saddle bags will give 14.3L which should be around 600 to 700kms range..they seem to like 70km/h with the largest front sprocket u can fit on....motors not workin too hard there, but mine will do 85 on the flat if i was in a hurry.....without that larger front sprocket they workin too hard at 60....(slow the posties down) ...movin up the front (ignoring the fire extinguisher on rear of crate)...i fit a front rack off the ag version & led day drivin lights under the headlight connected to low beam only...plus a custom aly helmet holder on the side of the front rack...i got an imitation front pvc postie bag that fits to the handle bars that is the most used bag....disconnected the signal buzzer inside headlight...custom foam hand grips & the most important custom accessory of all, a clamp to handle bars bicycle drink bottle holder, for havin a drink while goin along...theres also a padded water proof back seat rest that acts as a wind break for dog, & is real comfortable with feet on front pegs (which never need foldin up).....had many bikes over the years, trumpy tiger 650, katana 650 shaft drive (both brand new & i actually assembled the kat straight outa box) to name a couple...but the best bike i think that was ever made , is the CT110 custom Oz postie made in japan ...by a country mile...i callem 'easy bikes' cause everything about them is easy...easy to get in & off, easy to service, & real easy on the pocket to fill up ($6 a month)....
G'Day Garth, Nah not going to worry about a bash plate, but yeah it would look cool. I took it out today on a back road and managed to get 88kms on a down slope with no head wind. :-) 70kms seemed like a resonable cruising speed. I'm thinking 60 - 65kms when fully loaded.... bloody hell it's gunna be a slow haul up to Menindee (660kms). Cheers... Mark

Looking good mate, the bike that is.... I have seen similar looking pvc tubes and saddle bags elsewhere....lol Be sure to gaffa-tape the screw cap onto the tube otherwise it will undo itself and you can imagine the consequences. Cheers,

Wow great looking bike , and I love the idea of a long trip through the wilderness, I've liked and subbed to you just on this video alone. My dad and son and I are also building long range posties for our prospecting trips here in the USA , I wish we could ride together, I'll post a video of ours when there done.Now to watch your other video's.
Love it! What a beast. I have similar racks on the back of my Guzzi and they have been fine even with a fair bit of offroad. One thing i try to do is make everything from items bought at Bunnings. That way if i need a part i can usually fix it wherever i am.

Great work, that actually looks really awesome! I have to say that I think you're bringing too much stuff though. I've never been bike camping, but when I went hiking, the heaviest pack I ever carried was about 25kg and would have fitted easily on your rear rack, without needing the front bags.
G'day mate, yeah it's slow but it will run all day. I ended up doing 2,800kms in about a week. If you have a good postie bike with a motor that runs well... it will do it easy. Go via the Great Ocean Road it's perfect for the Postie. Cheers... Mark

Thanks mate, the heaviest it will be is 165kg not including me (85kg) so that's 250kgs all up. I will only fully fill petrol & water cans when I'm at the last place I can fill up. Cheers... Mark

Hi Mark. An inspiring video - many thanks. I am looking to set up a Postie for long distance travel. I was wondering how your pannier frame held up? I am thinking of making one very like it. I can buy a steel one or a chomolly one. The problem with both is that they do not support the bottom of the bags. I could weld something on the bottom of the steel one but it is heavy compared to the chomolly which I cant weld. Ideally i would build one like yours if it went well on your trip.All the best Scott

Great work Mark and thanks for sharing. I'm sort of doing the same after doing the Postie Bike Challenge / Pub Crawl from Hobart to Alice Springs (3500kms) in 10 days. I'm struggling with wether to add a pod filter (80 needle)and exhaust + 16T front sprocket to get top speed averages to 90kph when on the road. I found in the outback doing 70-80 was a little dangerous due to car / truck overtaking speeds....Thoughts anyone...?
G'day mate, thanks and that would have been a great ride! :-) My personal thoughts are if you're doing long distance riding on a Postie it's best to leave it stock. It was designed to do what it does and any increase in speed is only going to be wearing on the bike and maybe kill it halfway from nowhere :-) With that said... I say go for it if that's what you want to do... Never kill another mans dream! :-) Cheers... Mark

A problem I always had with the PVC toolbox idea (and also the PVC 'stubble holder' that was mounted vertically on the front) was the lid always vibrating off.. I took to using two screws into the plastic with an elastic band connecting them.

going to get the ct110 but just thinking your max speed is 75km/h+ , that mean it will take you ago to go there, is the honda ct110 engine is that reliable? 110cc can run that much? I thinking to ride it from Melbourne to adelaide, you think will it work?

Excuse my American ignorance but what is a Postie Bike, or rather why is it called that? Never heard of the term
+BlackShenanigans - It's a Honda CT110. We call them Posties because here in Australia the postmen use them to deliver the mail :-)
An Absolute Legend in Aus. Oh the early ones were 90cc. The newer ones now I see are Lime Green.

I would say 50kgs at a guess!

G'Day mate, thanks for that and yeah I reckon the postie bike will do it no worries... they are a proven reliable bike, but hey you never know... shit happens!! :-) No need for personal weapons here in Australia... LOL I've got a knife, an axe and a multi-tool and if I can't defend myself for what ever reason with them I shouldn't be out there in the outback playing around on me little postie bike! :-) I'd be more worried about walking through some of the inner city suburbs. Up to 7 of them ..theres no better bike ..love them .so do my 5 kids and 8 grandkids..let alone all my friends and neighbors .who bum them to run to the store on..
going to get the ct110 but just thinking your max speed is 75km/h+ , that mean it will take you ago to go there, is the honda ct110 engine is that reliable? 110cc can run that much? I thinking to ride it from Melbourne to adelaide, you think will it work?

Hi Mark, I.m gonna make a rack for my postie. Just Wondering how thick was the Aluminium you used, and did you find it strong/thick enough? Cheers.
3mm thick X 30mm wide on the rear and 3mm X 25mm on the front bags. Still going strong and would do the same again! :-)
