As a vhs hoarder/“collector” what most people do not understand is that vhs tapes are prone to developing mold, and it has been my experience that sealed vhs tapes are much more susceptible to contracting mold due to moisture getting trapped inside of the cellophane and not being able to escape during years of storage. I almost avoid buying sealed tapes because 1 in 3 has been stored improperly in a poorly ventilated closet, attic, or storage unit. Again, this has just been my experience, but for this reason, a “grade” means NOTHING as to the actual quality of the product!
I think if anything Grading adds to the quality of the exterior of the item since there it most likely will not be opened and also a way to add a prominence or paper trail to the item so it has some history and legitimacy, and weeds out the fakes like all these people who sell video game cases that they manufacture or get from china. So you take a sealed VHS and once it is graded, you automatically know its not fake and is in excellent physical exterior condition, and can check it with its serial numbers or whatever they use.
@Arugami Media "What you don't understand is that sealed VHS collectors have NO INTENTION of opening those tapes." This is exactly, why I am not convinced that media, like video games or movies, makes for sensible investments. Because just like would-be "collectors" (investors) have no intention to open these suckers, enthusiasts have EVERY INTENTION to watch these movies, play these games etc. And that is the weakness that can bite these markets in the ass swiftly. Because there is no organic overlap between the retro enthusiasts and the collectors/investors. This is where the grading of these forms of media, that goes about them as if we would be talking about stamps, trading cards or coins, gets it ass-backwards. Because it ultimatively judges these forms of media according to their packaging ..... and nothing else. Which is not at all, where the fascination with this stuff lies. That is, in these particular segments, why the actual collectors have not much to do with the guys, who now bid up "graded" media.
I believe the next big collectable market will be graded vintage albums. There are a lot of them kept in good condition & some are rare being sealed from first release. I would collect some of them just for there awesome art cover & hang up on the wall.
I got SoTN vinyl album when first released because of its beautiful classical theme songs (and one populat guitar riff), not to mention the original Alucard and Dracula artwork.
Problem with grading and slabbing vinyl albums is that like with books, it would ruin your ability to open it. Half the artwork is on the inside sometimes, and you can't tell if an album is warped until you open it. I have some sealed records that I keep just for the art and to preserve them, but most people who are into vinyl want to be able to open/play it. If you want to frame/display it, it looks better with the shrink removed anyway.
Wanna know whats collectible in the future? Look at what kids right now like to collect. When they grow up and have jobs, the stuff they collect as kids, theyll treat them as investments. Just like what we are doing right now with cards and comics and so on, they'll do the same when they get older.
That's called the 'rule of 25' and it has actually been proven false. I've done videos on this. That said, you are correct, that collectors tend to gravitate towards items they grew up with, but it is not a guarantee.
13:50 agreed. This hype driven stuff-(especially the guys wearing headphones yelling at the camera) is geared to generate community, camaraderie and profit- basically telling the audiences just what they want to hear. And the more comic books they purchase, the more they NEED to hear
Shawn, Would you consider doing a video about how a hawkish Federal Reserve could impact the collectibles and antique market? Just a thought since that seems to be a big concern for Wall Street investors at the moment.
I doubt there's more than a handful of people who actually want to collect graded VHS, but the grading companies and auction houses will have no problem convincing people there are hordes of people willing to pay for this stuff. They saw how well it worked with video games and they are going to try and replicate that.
Slightly off topic but I remember 2012 being a Time when us comic book fans (and collectors) could get signatures from Creators for free. I met Stan Lee in 2012 here in London (his first visit to the UK in over 40yrs) and the whole experience was free. Fast forward afew years later and not only have comics exploded but suddenly there were charges put in place for these autographs. Now full disclosure, I am a fan of comics and consider myself a Collector of Passion (not investor) but even I can see how ridiculous some of this all is.
I met him at Phoenix Comic Con in 2012, but he charged 70 bucks for an autograph. I got the autograph and had a convo with him. Was awesome, my little sister was mute from being starstruck lol
Very good point about Nintendo. Dominance in the video game industry comes and goes. Look at all of the major companies in gaming thats used to be major entities, and now operate mainly in the background or not at all.
Great vid! I do tend to agree that graded movies (initially on cassette, and eventually also on DVD, etc.) will likely become a thing. Between these four categories, I think that video games has the most legs (vs. cards, comic books & movies) since: * video games are 2-way interactive content as opposed to 1-way (though to be fair TCGs are part game part card/art). Interactive content forms a stronger bond / memory impression. * video games (& TCGs) beget competitive events - so, there’s a competitive (‘sporting’) sphere to video games (but not to books nor movies) - i.e. no tournaments for 1-way media
Shawn, Do you remember my question about mobile phone collecting in the 10K Q&A? 2 weeks ago my samsung SPH-N270 sold for $3000. I followed your advice that something has to be scarce and you have to sell into the hype. I bought this 'Matrix' phone last year for $500 to speculate on the hype in this year regarding the new Matrix movie. Now I have after fees around $2100 profit, I will invest this for my children in a financial instrument. Thank you very much for your advice and keep up the great work. I follow you since you had 500 subscribers and I looked all your video's! Respect
I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

You're right about VHS. The owner of the VHSCollector website recently made a video on outside speculators approaching him much like how Wata did with the old Nintendo Age website. His UA-cam channel is called Analog Archivist.
Its not only that Shawn, what really changed in the last 10 years is social media if some vlogger says go throw all your money away every is running and pushing to be first.
