  • “Sleepy Shores”, the theme music to the B.B.C. T.V. series “Owen M.D.” Composed by Johnny Pearson, his own orchestral version spent 15 weeks in the UK charts between late 1971 and early 1972, peaking at No.8. The T.V. series centred around the eponymous lead character's (played by Nigel Stock) new country practice, following his departure from “The Doctors”, which had been set in north London.

De tv-serie draaide om de nieuwe countrypraktijk van het gelijknamige hoofdpersonage (gespeeld door Nigel Stock), na zijn vertrek uit “The Doctors”, dat zich in Noord-Londen afspeelde.

    Fab orchestral number with a great piano vibe - worthy of more than just theme tune status.
    I bought the Johnny Pearson single back in the day - still got it in moth balls somewhere…

      Agreed. I cannot recall now if Johnny's version was with full orchestra (maybe you can refresh my memory on that) but I wonder if it was written without necessarily being intended for the BBC series. I do remember it being played on Top Of The Pops and seeing teenie bobbers trying to dance to it! Such times!

      …yes, a full orchestral arrangement. Far too good as a theme tune - my theory is Johnny had already got this in the can to release at some point for maximum impact and the TV got to use it to publicise their show. The irony is it got known as the Owen MD theme which begged the question “what’s Owen MD”?

      @@IVORIESMAN Thanks for the info. It was the TV show that spread the music to the wider public and that is what helped it to chart. I doubt if Johnny had many regrets in that regard. It was covered by other artists quite a bit too.
