Agreed. I cannot recall now if Johnny's version was with full orchestra (maybe you can refresh my memory on that) but I wonder if it was written without necessarily being intended for the BBC series. I do remember it being played on Top Of The Pops and seeing teenie bobbers trying to dance to it! Such times!

…yes, a full orchestral arrangement. Far too good as a theme tune - my theory is Johnny had already got this in the can to release at some point for maximum impact and the TV got to use it to publicise their show. The irony is it got known as the Owen MD theme which begged the question “what’s Owen MD”?

@@IVORIESMAN Thanks for the info. It was the TV show that spread the music to the wider public and that is what helped it to chart. I doubt if Johnny had many regrets in that regard. It was covered by other artists quite a bit too.

So far as I recall, it only ran for two seasons in the UK, 1985 to 1986, plus the usual VHS video. It was one of many similar cartoon series with similar plots, characters and music. It was probably well received by kids but the plots were not very good and were criticised as such. The music will probably just be vaguely familiar as 80s stuff to most people nowadays.

I recall it being one of my favourite series when I was growing up here in Canada. Looking back from an adult perspective a lot of the episodes were far fetched, even by 80s kids show standards. It was one of those shows that were basically 30 minute commercials for toy lines but we didn't care at the time. And it must be pointed out that the show had an extremely varied, multiracial cast that (mostly) avoided the worst stereotypes. The rocking theme song was defiantly one of the highlights. As for plot, M.A.S.K was a secret group of crime fighters organized and led by wealthy industrialist Matt Tracker. The main gimmick was that each of them drove powerful vehicles that looked ordinary enough to pass as the agents' daily drivers but transformed at the flip of the switch. For example Matt's personal vehicle was "Condor", the gull winged sports car/light jet. Each agent also wore powerful masks (more like helmets) that has unique powers, such as firing energy beams Their rivals were the terrorist/criminal organization V.E.N.O.M, led by the traitorous former general Miles Mayhem who had equally powerful vehicles.

Yes, Terry Scott came along later to 'cash' in on Charlie's earlier efforts. I think that in 1960 it was considered to be just another silly' but harmless 'kids' record'. I recall my uncle (who was a bit of a family party DJ) not wanting to play it at one of our xmas parties of yore seemingly as it was 'silly and just for kids'. As for the ending, we never really thought about any 'dangers', and even now I assumed it was just a kid playing with his toy gun and caps and frightening the old codgers! But I must admit that I wondered if YT might block it as it might be considered 'dangerous' to certain feeble minds (cruelty to animals, wanton destruction of women's personal attire & gun violence) lol!
