  • The same clips as recently shared, in the same order as before, but this time, I hope they should work, rather than freeze up.
A while ago, I ran a BSA A65 with a rattly engine in the workshop and found it had a very sloppy timing side journal and bush, as well as a loose timing pinion. I stripped it for checking and repair and had to wait a while before the crank could be sorted out, with a regrind on the timing side and the big ends polished. I cleaned the sludge trap and fitted the new timing side bush - the timing side crankcase with new bush was used for sizing, to get the reground journal to within a 0.001" fit in the bush.
Here, we see some checks being made and reassembly under way.

45 years ago, I rebuilt my A65 Lightning. Devimead rods & pistons, & other bits. The sludge trap was a bitch to get out, & I realised what a crap design this motor is. If the sludge trap blocks up, the oil stops going to the LH big end, hence it's propensity to throw a LH rod out of the crank. I sold it, I've often wondered what happened to it.
Watching you, I now realise the things I didn't do... 🤣
    Very interesting content. 👍

Your perseverance has paid dividends again , well done . As a know all know nothing ,would a paper crankcase gasket given you some extra clearance .

Yes, I suppose a thin paper gasket might have worked.

Hi Paul, Why not use a micrometer to measure the crank shim? also I have used GM Loctite bearing mount on a push fit bearing like you had with excellent results.

Hi Paul. I have been really enjoying your videos lately. This one reminds me very much of working on the bottom end of my 1967 Triumph Saint in the early eighties and doing similar end float investgations. One roller bearing was ruined after I had loctited it to the crank and then realised the float had gone out of spec. 🤐The checking of the centrality of the bare crank journals in the cylinder bores was also part of the deal. Also, I heard somewhere years ago that alloy being alloy the cases will "grow" as they reach operating temperature and probably increase end float slightly more. Any thoughts? I had a very cold night in Aberystwyth in 1989 in a static caravan. Those Welsh roads look great. Shame I didn't get to ride them on the TR25W, B44, R65 or Honda CB250RS that I had while living in Birmingham and then Leicestershire. Enjoyed hacking around Lutterworth on a mates A65 Hornet...lovely racket on and off the throttle! Same mates Thunderbird threw its primary chain one day and locked up the clutch basket and back wheel. Thankfully (probably caused by rolling the throttle off) when slowing down for a roundabout. That was interesting! 😲 Best wishes. God bless you and yours. Dave. New Zealand. 😊

Hi Paul, great video would you be interested in restoring my mum's old BSA bantam engine? It ran perfectly in 1965
