    WHAT IS AN ADU?
ADU stands for accessory dwelling unit. An ADU is a permanent additional housing structure built on a property that already has a main home or main structure. You may have heard them referred to as granny flats, casitas, guest houses, or in-law suites. They can be built on a single-family lot or multi-family lot (duplexes count as multi-family).
An ADU has its own entrance, separate from the primary house, as well as a kitchen, bathroom, and living space.
Accessory dwelling units can be rented year-round and add a lot of value to your property. They can be garage conversions, stand-alone units, attic or basement conversions, or be attached to the main house.
ADUs are exceptionally flexible, and most owners find that their use for the unit evolves over the years. The main reason people build ADUs in California is to house a relative, usually a parent but often an adult child. The second most common use is to rent for additional income.

The problem is how many more cars that’ll be parking in the area and probably THEIR house taking away parking that they and their guests have usually had. Then people will be fighting over the parking.

I know here I have to have sufficient parking for the unit I’m building on the property. So parking wouldn’t be the issue here.

In my city, they notify the neighbors when building, any addition on the second floor. If the new law allows up to 25ft in hieghtfor an attached ADU can the city deny the permit? Because they notify the neighbors, if they get any opposition, they automatically send the applicant to public hearing for the ADU. Doesn't that violate the law?

Is it possible to label a dwelling as an adu before the main house is built? We are in California and plan on building an RV garage with an adu attached with the idea of living in it temporarily while building main house then using as guest space in the future. Does this make the the new 2023 regulations not applicable if we do it this way? Thank you for your informative videos!

Thanks for tuning in! You at least have to have the permits for the main house before you can start an ADU. Some cities may be different, but this is what we've heard from most policymakers in California.
