Can you use the grant for construction?
If a garage was already built with the house and was permitted even when less then 4 ft from the side would i need to move garage 4 ft from property line? Or could i still convert garage without adding more construction to the building
Nope, you shouldn't have to move it! In California, as long as you are solely using an existing permitted structure (like a garage), it should be grandfathered in with regard to the setback requirements.
Who are these people with yards in California?
If you can’t use the grant for labor or material, then what is it for?
The grant can be used for any "soft costs" like design, site prep, consulting fees, buying down interest on the loan, etc.
I don't get it. The bulk of the costs are construction and labor. So how is this really helpful?
The grant can be used for most pre-development costs like site preparation, design fees, and even buying down the interest on your loan. All of this can add up to $40k pretty quickly!
