Superb service? I remember being stuck on the tarmac for 6 hrs not knowing why, with the bus running in Addis on my way to Zimbabwe in 2016. The passengers almost started an uproar until we were driven back to the terminal where we were finally told our flight was cancelled. Oh by the way, there was no toilet papper in the toilets. The airliner has entirely new fleets. The majority of its fleets are Boeing 787 dream liner and Airbus 350. The hospitality, the food and beverages in long distance flights are fantastic. It's always my first choice.
Thanks mate for sharing this. To give you some context (I'm from Ethiopia BTW), Ethiopia was not colonized, which meant it was able to join the aviation industry earlier than competitors. Also, independent (from government) and good management helped the airline get to where it is today. Happy flight!
Another great job Dom! I've flown Ethiopian once before from Dakar to Johannesburg via ADD (plus a fuel stop in Bamako). Was quite a decent service all things considered. Used Lufthansa miles at the time. I've always wanted to try their fifth freedom route from Geneva to Manchester as their A350 offers much more comfort than a Swiss A220 would

The aircraft stops in Stockholm both on the way to and from Oslo from Addis Ababa, so the only passengers checking in will be those going to Oslo. I imagine the check in and the flight in general is a lot busier later in the day when the aircraft stops on its way back towards Addis non-stop.
Loved this report. Mind you, anything would be an amazing watch if presented with a Scot narrating. I don't think the fifth freedom will be renewed since SAS are no longer in Star Alliance but make the most of it while it's still there, I guess.
In Ethiopia on local flight they serve pastry and any drinks except alcohol for free. In UK on my First local flight I was surprised to learn I have to pay if I need any drink or snack 😊
Yes it’s the best airline it has been underrated, don’t forget during Covid lockdown the only airline was delivered to the most African cities and around the Asia and Latin American countries. Excellent Dom. Wonder if the passengers on board were stopping off at Oslo or moving on to another destination? Paris or London before a turn around back to Addis Ababa .
My bad, I mentioned that Sweden is in the EU and Norway was in the EEA but I referred to the boarder as the EU boarder when I should have said Schengen boarder. 😅
The problem with 5th freedom flights is that you sometimes end up with long haul delays on short haul hops. I did check on the airlines financial performance which at least in the last reported year looked pretty good but with large numbers of Bowing aircraft on order one always worries about aggressive expansion.
@@WorldWide_Dom I don’t think it’s so much that they are Boeings (love autocorrect by the way) I just think it’s a warning sign when in response to good business airlines go on massive expansions. They have orders on around, in total 75 aircraft, more 787s, 73Ms and 777Xs. Is their core business going to expand that much? Average income in the country is a $1k a month, is inbound tourism going to pick up the cost of all those $ leases on the aircraft? Going by your video and the cost of your 5th freedom ticket suggests and the load factors you saw suggests that’s not the answer. they are scraping for revenue
I don't think Ethiopian growth is aggressive considering they are on a long winning streak in yealy profits, even during COVID. Yes, some routes may not be packed with passengers but they're definitley full of belly freight. Lots of aircraft on order and yet more to come this year because they know most of these won't be delivered before the 2030s. Investing early for the future is organic growth.
@@danielcoa2189 5-10% of commercial airline revenue comes from Cargo and if you’ve a big cargo business you buy freighters not 777Xs. Now Africa is projected to see pretty high increases in demand over the next decade. Rather like South America where I live. And all the expansion is coming here from low cost carriers and even the ‘national’ airlines are now calling themselves Hybrids rather than fessing up that in reality they are low costs. The problem here, as will be the case in Africa, is $ based leases. In July the local currency, the Birr, was at around 55 to the $. Now, just a few months later it is at 120.
