Soul Ending Explained & Easter Egg Breakdown!

- Jazz is a pretty subjective musical styling, but it’s impossible not to fall in love with it in Pixar’s new existential masterpiece, Soul. This movie is definitely a lot different from the majority of Disney-Pixar’s catalog - from its muted color palette, to its 48-year-old protagonist, to its extremely open-ended finish. I’m Whitney Van Laningham and in this breakdown we’ll dive into the easter eggs and juicy meaning of Pixar’s incredibly unique Soul.

So literally 22's body would have an "old soul" as some people say to others😄
But when you sit down and think about it, there are some “old souls” already in our everyday lives. My best friend for example...

Quick fun fact: The “This is Water” story that Dorothea Williams says was from a commencement speech by David Foster Wallace
@@carsonbarnesharp Which is interesting considering how she told another water based story on Bojack Horseman, coincidence?
YES! “This is Water”! I was kind of fangirling at that part while my folks were looking at me weird. It wasn’t exactly the same as that speech, but I think it took inspiration from it.
Speech? Is from one of his books
Where do you think David Foster Wallace got it from?! She got it from watching Soul!
I was familiar with the speech, the line in the movie was a little different. Dorothea Williams has the young fish say “what’s the ocean? This is water.” The speech just had the fish say “What's water?”
This movie was so much fun! The amount of care and detail that goes into makes it a truly great movie for the whole family.

*ok I have a theory worth reading*
my claim is 22 is the witch in brave!
Why? Because I think the witch is the closest person to have 22's personality and wisdom about life!
How? 22 is the oldest wisest and most experienced soul of all. 22 learned about many things from her mentors and the jerrys. And 22 is well aware about the door portal when she was just a soul because she's a matured grown up soul and she even made her own portal the "just a box" and maybe the door portal of jerrys inspired her to make her own time travelling door portal when she became human. (I dont know how tho)
Now notice how 22 appreciates Joe's mother and kept the yarn she probably saw the picture on the wall that says "SEWING MENDS THE SOUL"
And the crazy part about this theory is the witch in brave also gave Merida a riddle somewhat close to "Sewing mends the soul" (mend the bond torn by pride)
Because in brave, merida sliced the tapestry of their family picture turning her mother into a bear and the only way to bring back her mother again is SEWING the taspestry back in one piece thus mending the broken bond torn by pride (sewing mends the soul)
And it's also about a mother and son/daughter relationship.
@@arg7380 we need Matpat to give a theory.
@@arg7380 As much as I love that theory, 22 would most likely be living in the same time period as Joe. I saw 22 as being the viewer. A lot of people today are cynical about life and face the same anxieties that 22 faced when they became a lost soul. They’re cynical but they are also curious about and are able to find some joys of life that make them want to try it which I think is fitting for a lot of people who are going through each day for that one little thing they find that makes life worth it. I kinda figured he'd quit the band and focus on teaching myself. There was a huge emphasis on his ability to guide 22, and when he was actually in the moment teaching them he seemed truly happy and fulfilled. It just made me think that Jazz might be his spark, but teaching could be his new drive, since being on stage wasn't everything he thought it'd be.
hey me too, I thought the movie was gonna go in the direction of 'I always thought Jazz was my spark but in fact, it was teaching and guiding lost SOULs' and that's why he didn't feel any different after fulfilling his life long dream.
As a high school student thinking about my future, this movie is just what I needed. I keep stressing about what I want to do or what my purpose in life is, and I haven’t stopped to just live and accept that life will go on. That’s not to say I shouldn’t think about my future, but I feel like you shouldn’t worry so much about it that you forget the present.
Enjoy the journey my friend!
Best of luck to you.

Very well said
People complaining about the ending is literally part of the lesson of what they were trying to teach the audience, oh the irony.
The ending actually made me cry. XD
yeah all these people saying they wanna see where they are at the end and what happened to them, and wanting sequels totally goes against the message of living life and not making it about goals and searching for happy endings, which is why I think this ending was perfect for that message
Yeah I normally hate open ended endings but thought the ending for Soul was perfect. Honestly, even Joe said he doesn't know what he will do but will enjoy every minute of it. So having a directed 'happy' ending would ruin what Joe said imo
i was happy with Joe
but i did want to see like just a little teaser of 22 being a kid and looking up at the sky and have one of those seeds float down again and they catch it.
I think it really represented how life is. There’s no real ending, until we pass on into the great beyond! Just like Joe, it’s up to us to figure out what happens next.

And it's also about a mother and son/daughter relationship.
@@arg7380 Neat theory, but one thing: Sewing the tapestry isn’t actually the thing that turned Queen Elinor back to her human form. It was Elinor and Merida’s willingness to let go of their pride and listen to each other. The “bond” the witch was talking about was the mother-daughter bond, which was strong when Merida was little, but wore away over the years due to the pride and stubbornness of both mother and daughter. Queen Elinor became human again only after Merida apologized and told her mom she loved her.

I interpreted the "spark" as the authentic desire for life, and not when engaging in a specific passion (like Jazz playing) but for all the basic, in-between, mundane parts of living (walking, talking, eating, breathing, being). That's why 22 never could get a spark, because she never wanted to live until she experienced it.
and that's why being "in the zone" is like not-living, when too immersed in activity that the world disappears completely.
Living (as defined by the film) is experiencing the world outside you and around you in the moment.

I feel like the "spark" is the final decider for whether that soul wants to experience life or not, like Jazz is what made Joe think "yes, this is what makes me want to see what Earth is like", for another person, swimming is what made them want to experience life, it's like, "wow, this is the most amazing thing I've tried! But what else is there?" type of thing. For 22, it was the experience of life itself that made her want to go to Earth I think. Anyway.

Yes, that’s in point mr sokka profile picture. That spark badge was earned when the soul wanted to start to live. Just got done watching this film when this video was posted and I loved it so much and relate to both Joe and 22 on so many levels, especially with the scene with 22’s insecurities hitting a little too close to home for me.
Ooof! Been there because of social anxiety☹️
That part of the movie really hit me hard too. I wasnt expecting to understand a character so much...it made me cry.

Jerry: Ignore that.
I think that Joe had a passion for living all along, he just had to be reminded of it. Seeing the world through fresh eyes (22) allowed him to do that. At the beginning when he's with the big crowd of other souls walking across the bridge, he is the only one fighting it and trying to get back to life.
It's because he just got a gig in playing with Dorothy Williams. He didn't have a passion for living but rather becoming a great jazz player. That's why when 22 and Joe were in the Soul place that shows Joe's bits and pieces of his life - he was a sad fellow. You could say he thought playing jazz on stage would make him feel satisfied but it actually didn't.
He definitely had the passion, just for the wrong reasons.
I like how everyone else was so chilled with being dead, like "yeah, I finally got out of that heckhole."
@@ASHERUISE Well it depends I suppose. Joe wasn't ready to die, but the 106 year old lady was ready to move on. At some point you can't help but be ready for whatever comes next.
This movie kinda reminded me a lot of Spirited Away. It made me cry because ive gone through depression & anxiety & have felt like i had no purpose in life. I fell into a deep depression & had suicidal thoughts & tried many times. I figured it wasnt my time. I have had a traumatic life that has brought me to this. I related so much to this movie & i got emotional towards the end because i was able to relate to 22 in so many levels 😔
😢😢 yes!!!
Hope you found some peace in your life now 🙏🏾
@@bambaking6265 i did thank you so much ❤️
We have the same feelings. Mine was way back 2017-2018, when I was in highschool. That’s the year where I got depressed the most. I lost my spark, I even changed into a different person and didn’t know what I was doing. Most of the people didn’t like me. I have no circles of friends. And I even didn’t get any invites from their whereabouts. I always end being alone in the school. No friends to talk with, and they even didn’t like me to be part of the class group, and partnered activities.
That time, I thought that I am a different person. And then, I attempted to suicide. Luckily, I was called by some teachers, and some concerned students
I almost died because my neck hurt and I cannot breath. That rope thing, those people who called and messaged me upon reading my suicide posts on FB, have helped me acknowledge that I should appreciate my life.
@@JacobPolicediez life is going to be hard at times & its gonna sound like the end of the world for now, but things get better. They really do. I still struggle with depression & anxiety, but its not as bad as before. I have learned to work with it and know that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes it feels like we’re alone in this, but just remember, there are people whether they are friends or strangers who will care about you. Sometimes its the strangers that come into your life who will be there for you more than a friend or family ever will. Im just so happy to hear that you are good now! I always like to remind myself that today’s bad day is just a bad day and tomorrow will be better. Today’s bad day does not define a bad life. We deserve to live our lives to our fullest and enjoy the hardships in life because it teaches us to be strong ❤️
I can relate so much to Joe saying "I'm not done!! I have to get back" Because my greatest fear is not doing all the things I intend to do before I die
One of the most interesting Easter eggs is Jerry or "The coming together of all quantized fields in the universe, appearing in a form our feeble human brains can comprehend." in that they visualize this as a higher dimensional lattice projected into a lower dimensional form. The Character designs of Jerry and Terry are based off of shadow figures projected off wire frame models, in other words a 3D object projected onto a 2D surface just like they described literally. To take this a level deeper this could also be interpreted as an interpretation of Plato's cave, if the lives that we experience are just shadows/projections of something happening in a higher dimension what would a quantized representation of beings existing primarily in that space look like? The series of circles the new souls are carrying around is a symbol commonly known as the egg of life or human life after the first three cell divisions (8 cells total) that occurs before developing into a morula, which in turn looks like they were possibly alluding to when the new souls clustered up (right before the building "falls over")
i really liked you comment, just one small detail, the shadow projected from an above dimension is a shadow that looks the same to the actual dimension. In the 2d dimension we see objects from the third dimension as flat lines and from the third dimension we see those as shadows from 3d objects, but, a superior entity from a superior dimension will project a shadow in a 3d form that we can see and not in a literally shadow form. if those beings are infinite-dimensional then they will need to show us the "shadow" of a 4 dimensional object in a 3d form so we can see it. Due to the fact that we cannot access lower dimensions we are not able to see superior or lower dimensions beings, so, is impossible for us to see a 2 dimensional being.
@@detzerkcetz9202 thanks my head already hurt and now it hurts more
You may not have heard about it, but the Jerries and Terry are a very sophisticated tribute to La Linea by italian artist Osvaldo Cavandoli, back in 1971.
I guess them being 2D would render more fathomable visually than them being a one up higher of us, 4D, etc.
In the music room scene with the kids practicing, there is a kid in a red hoodie with a guitar that looks like an older Miguel from Coco.
@Bella Zang it's just an Easter egg...it's not actually meant to be Miguel from Coco

Give it a Fucking Oscar for best animated picture. I cried through this film and has a fantastic message
Well deserved
Hell, give it Best Picture too
It was sweet, but have you seen Wolf Walkers though?
Actually, after I watched this movie, it gave me a new mindset. I realized that we all have our own purpose to find. But there's one thing that I realized that I can't express or explain, idk but I have the feeling that when I'm all done and Finish my Reason for living, I know my time will come because there's someone who's going to find their own purpose, their own spark, their own Passion and their Reason for living, just like me in the first place. You know what I've learned from a person it's 'Id rather live a life that I want, more than a life that's healthy. Like Joe said ' What if I'm going to die today that is unexpected. My dreams will be melted by the time I'm gone without knowing that I didn't got to try the things I wanted. U know life is full of possibilities, you just have to look where. Yes, this movie is one of the best movies I've ever seen in my whole entire life. Everyone will realize that there's a reason for their living, they just need to find them. TBH I cried to this movie, especially on the ending part when Joe answered the question "So, how are you gonna spend your life?"
Joe answered "I don't know... but, what do I know? Is that I'm gonna live every minute of it :
"My unconscious mind hates you!"
I died!😆

I made a fun Theory that our main man Joe will eventually get with Lisa and when their child is born, you see a hilariously funny smile on the newborn and it's 22 saying" Daddy!"❤

also since they knew each other as souls would Joe and 22- or whatever they go by as a human now- be able to know each other and recognize each other? especially 22 since they WERE in joe's body for a day
Yes, they're soulmates. They'll recognize one another like the ships captain's/sign twirler (I forgot his name lol) soul recognize them on the street.

Not impossible, but as is pointed out, according to the movie, the souls aren't born with a purpose. That's something they discover at some point in life.
Moral of the story: Don't take life for granted, do your best and keep going! :) Have a good one and happy new year!
The Knicks catching a random stray due to 22's meddling made this movie worth it. Last championship was in 73, damn.
OMG I thought that NOT showing us where 22 ended up was brilliant. You really feel that sense of happy and sad all at once. You feel so happy for 22 but at the same time you feel that sense of loss because you're saying goodbye to a friend. Showing 22 again would take away that ending in the same way that Jack surviving at the end of Titanic would make us feel better but would also rob us of the whole meaning of the story.

i think the ending was nice, but I kept hoping that somehow with Joe's second chance at life he would fall in love, get married, and have a kid that will have the soul of 22 :) of course 22 wouldn't remember Joe as all souls don't remember the Great Before, but somehow Joe will just feel that special connection to his kid as it was meant to be!
Some movies are better with vague endings, maybe everything you wished they showed did happen, maybe it didn't, life is uncertain and we just saw one event in Joe's life, but his life is still going even tho we can't see it, and we don't need to know what happens after, all that matters is that he's enjoying every second of his life
