Lots of people wonder if it's dangerous? Is it scary? Is it difficult?
Well the answer is very personal. Yes there is some exposure, but its relatively tame in my opinion. In the right conditions of course!
Yes, there is some reasonable scrambling, but for those with any scrambling experience, it's still relatively easy. But again, this is my opinion!
Watch the video and see the footage of the actual ridgeline, see the drops and exposure and make your own mind up!
This is a route from Patterdale, up Striding Edge, to Helvellyn and back down Sticks Gill to Glenridding! Amazing views of St Sunday Crag on the way up as well!

Thank you for this video. I climbed Helvellyn by this route in 1972 when I was only 15. In the youth hostel that evening, someone asked me if I had gone up by striding edge. I replied, 'What's that?'
Many factors put the balance in hillwalking from leisure and pleasure to hazardous and dangerous. Personal fitness and weather being major two, along with the route you take on the day. Experience can take a confident person on one part of the journey to a situation they’ve never encountered and uncertainty. For example walked up the same approach as this video on a bright spring day and within the space of a sheep wall it went from lush greenery to Narnian frost and snow. Same journey, as the apex of the rock traverse was met, a Search and Rescue helicopter passed close by; not a direct threat to safety for some, but a distraction all the same. The peak had many folk milling about without the benefit of good gear and clearly bagged it as a walk from the smoothed slopes away from the horseshoe routes shown here.
Enjoyed the footage and how the different pace of walking when it’s busy can mean dwelling in a place you’d want to move through at a working stride can be subject to ‘traffic’.
Great video! Got my adreneline going with the edge filming. I did it last year in wet mistly conditions and ended up climbing down the chimney to avoid some of the veritcal climb on the edge. I would recommend doing it with someone who is experienced to give advice on the route choices. I made it to the top and the sense of achievement was amazing.
"It's about the person." Yes, it's not just fitness or agility--I found that in a group of hikers on Striding Edge, the differences in "happiness" were due mainly to one's psychological and perhaps physiological reaction to exposure. One friend coped very well if he scrambled about fifteen feet BELOW the ridge. Being often off the track made it technically harder, but he had the comfort of the wall beside him. He also got comfort from the fsct that someone was keeping an eye on him--not that an accident could be prevented if he fell, but that he wouldn't be left alone. To me, nothing captures the freedom and sublimity of Striding Edge and the Knife Edge in Maine (similar glacial artefacts). Last spring we visited Sligachan on Skye for the first time, and although iIam now too old and broken-down to climb, I revelled in what I could see was "up there." It's not as bad as some videos make it seem and definitely not as bad as Crib Goch. For some reason I thought the last part up the mountain was worse than the ridge.

I did Striding Edge as a school kid with my grandparents. We found out about it in a leaflet in the B&B and we didn’t think anything of it other than a normal fell walk. Took a pile of camera gear. I did wish I had warmer clothes though, it got cold with the wind whipping over the ridge.

Iv been up,Helvelyn 4 times this year and it’s been a combination of rain wind and snow . I saw a few do it in them conditions but I certainly wouldn’t . On sat 26th March it was a glorious day and striding edge looked like it had a line of ants walking along it’s ridge . It was so busy . I went down swirrel edge to do catstycam and back up that was. That is relatively easy . Iv done striding and from experience you have to hold your nerve . It’s all about taking your time across the rocky path .
Went up Helvellyn about 17 years ago, when I was 18, but went some back way then down Swirral edge. There were some fairly scary bits down that, but I loved your very matter of fact, non wide angle footage there. Made it seem very doable but also awesome. Would love to see yours or someones similars' opinion of climbing Sieve Bearnagh or somthing in Northern Ireland.. No edge necessarily but it's sush a steep and epic mountain. So different to other countries peaks. The tops are so gruellingly steep and amazing!
Ive walked Angels Landing in Zion NP .USA. Also walked Striding edge. Scary in different ways.
Cracking video mate, we've just got back from the Lakes funnily enough... we did Catbells from Pontinscale so had the little scramble up there.. we had our 11 year old with us.. managed fine up the Catbells scrambles, this much different? cheers.
Personally bud, I’d say it’s quite considerably more difficult than Catbells. But mainly due to the exertion and the exposure of the higher fell. It’s still not a technical scramble by any means. Like I say in the video though, it’s always up to you and knowing what your comfortable with. 👍🏻

Both edges are Jekyll & Hyde characters, depending on the weather.
Not for the faint hearted or unfit in poor weather.
Be warned, there's been more fatalities as the years have gone on.

It’s hard to tell on the camera, if you lost footing and fell, are you going to have a steep fall and die or is it more of a tumble with some scrapes and bruises.?
There are places where that’s possible. But not a lot really. I’d say you would have to be really unlucky to do this! You can, for the most part avoid these spots too! 👍🏻

Did this in pretty hairy conditions. Started chucking it down when i got to striding edge. Striding edge wasn't too bad, just slow and steady movement. Descending via swirrel edge when it was wet was very treacherous at times but i made it out okay. Great trip all around, not as hard as i anticipated. Doing Blencathra sharp edge tomorrow and it looks to be wet haha

I went up from Glenridding up to striding Edge left tent qt bottom and smashed my phone half way up I countered striding edge and made it

Striding Edge is a breeze but good luck on finding a day when there aren't hundreds of other people tramping along it. The Lakes is garbage if you want peace and tranquility, head to Wales, Peaks or Dales for solitude.
Places like this are ruined by the numbers of people.
