One animation i personally love is when Claude Dodges a close attack with a backflip and immediately counters mid hair with the bow. I don't remember if it happens with all archers or it is exclusive to him
To me, it wasn't the animations themselves that were bad, they just lacked a lot of supplementary effects that would have enhanced them a lot (I.E. Screenshake, better hit sound effects, etc. Bit of a shame, since I really do like some of these animations, especially dimitri's great lord crits
Oh yeah, true. The impact of defeating an enemy or a critical hit sound like FE: Echoes or Awakening, Fates could work. Though I believe I've heard that Koei Techmo was in charge of animations since somehow Nintendo let it be, makes sense for collaborating but man, especially the lower generic classes animation felt pretty, normal yet nothin'. Though it did suck that each character didn't have their own victory animation or stand by animation or even showing animation when their low on health.
I think for me, the biggest issue with 3H’s animations is that there’s a lack of weight and impact to a lot of them. There’s little if any hit stun when strikes hit, the motions often feel just a tad too smooth or flat for what are supposed to be heavy strikes. I’m guessing part of this is a consequence of using the Dynasty Warrior engine b/c those games have a lot of the same quirks, but I think they also work for that style of large scale action game vs. a slower, more 1-vs-1 fights in a SRPG.
I appreciate you propping up the good of 3Hs animations. I agree that Valentina and the 3ds games in general had way more impact, but it's not like I disliked these ones. I'll always love the Astra animation in this game for how streamlined yet cool they managed to make it. Very glad Engage has those weighty sounding/feeling moves and effects again
Yeah, it's sound effects. Look at 4:20, that's basically the Druid's crit animation from the GBA games, but it feels significantly more lackluster here due to the lack of the charging sound effect. The lack of intentional camera angles doesn't help, but I do think that overlaying sound older effects onto the key parts of the animations (like the hit sound from the 3ds games) would really help
Yeah from just a basic animation stand point, I definitely still think Three Houses is strong. I especially love the idea of having critical animations both for approaching and defending attacks, and like we saw here, some of the later combat arts have some pretty cool animations. Sword of the Creator being a chain sword will always be one of my favorite ideas from Three Houses ever just for how aestetically cool it is too. My main gripe was always just that combat had a lot more attack, jump back for 3 seconds, attack again, but other than that, still a treat to watch.
My main problem with it was that everything was just so slow, I couldn’t get through the game without speeding up the combat animations because everything moved glacially slow by default. Other than that the animations were fine.
The core problem here is that the animations themselves are fine. The actual problem is they lack camera work along with strong visual and audio design to sell the attacks. I think not helping matters is that we even lost unique victory animations as well. That said Claude's critical, trickster animations, and pegasus bow CRIT are awesome in spite of all that
One thing that I think hurt 3 Houses animations more than the 3ds games was the inability to change/ lack of camera angles for the animations. Watching that bow knight animation, it’s just static behind Bernadette. Compare it to Fates where you got a slight pan down and maybe a side pan as well. For me, those simple pans made it feel like I was watching a different combat scene each time, and I don’t think I can say the same for 3 Houses (unless you use the class combat arts, those are cool af especially Flickering Flower).
You forgot about a cool Animation for the Bow Knights I think it's when the dodge Melee range attacks they literally Jump off their horse defie the Laws of Gravity for a couple of seconds while they fire an Arrow at the opponents then land back on the horse. I had that happen a couple of times with Bernadetta and I was like wow something she would be afraid she faces her fear straight on.
I never had a problem with Three Houses' animations besides combat arts mostly looking the same. You missed my favorite animation which is Enlightened One's crit attack where they spin and then flip as they attack. I also like Enlightened One's dodge animation.
Late but I love the one where Byleth does a backflip with his sword while hitting the ennemy. Also to make the hit have more impact i was playing with the x2 speed option. For example at 0:12 with Dimitri, i would always press A until 0,5 sec before each hit to gave the animation a slow motion hence more power/impact.
even though i agree with everyone that the animations needed some minor improvements, i still believe so far 3h had one of the best in the franchise and especially skills like astra or most criticals were top-notch. fire emblem engage seems to cover those issues with faster paced animations (without having to hold the skip button) and a smoother + better look overall. But for some reason i can't shake the feeling that i'm going to miss some minor features like the hype build up when criticals happen with the "anime face zoom-in" animation or the battle cry soundeffects when entering/leaving fights or the classic fire emblem gaining experience/level up sound.
Yeah, I think 3H overall had a decent idea with some of their critical hits, though when it comes to animations, there are a few particulars that make the attacks overall lacking in comparison to other games: 1) Some attacks seem really slow, in a way that isn't really intended. Like, for example, cool as the Falcon Knight's critical animations can be - especially the one where they swoop back and forth - the animation feels rather slow, with a bit of time between the first and second hits, in a way that really kills the momentum it seemed to be building up to. Probably why most games either go with one hit or multiple hits in quick succession. And bringing back the Falcon Knight, it certainly looks... weird when the attacker gets too far away from their enemy, like when Byleth is swinging the sword in the air for the second and third time but still hitting the enemy. 2) The game does *not* handle long range combat well at all. Put too much space between the combatants and it makes the battle feel so slow, like how Bernadetta will launch an arrow after the build-up and then it takes a moment before it lands that has no energy behind it. I get why, but at the same time, the energy just feels lost. Related to that, but if you keep the enemy at long range but both can hit (like in the Bernie clip vs the Holy Knight using Aura), the back and forth of them taking a hit and getting back into position to attack does contribute to that slow feeling there. 3) Like a lot of the other people note, the sound design of 3H is pretty... hit or miss, especially in regards to physical weapons. There really isn't anything flashy or particularly noteworthy of a critical hit compared to a normal hit in regards to sound or graphics, so it really doesn't stand out too much by comparison... which is a shame, given how much it would probably be improved by that. Humorously, I think if you make a direct comparison between Fogado and Claude, you can really see how much Engage has fixed the animation shortcomings. The arrow spin between around the finger, the general expressiveness that 3H models can only dream of, tossing the arrow up high and the camera following it, then pulling back the bowstring while the arrow flashes... you can see how what Claude does in 3H becomes really solidified with Fogado by comparison.
I think the standing Warrior/War Master crit deserves a shoutout as well (the one where they push their chest forward before spinning the axe around their head a few times.) While fairly simple in some regards, I think that’s one of the best attacks in the games at conveying weight. Before the strike, the attacker shifts their grip lower down the handle to extend the attack’s reach, which in turn lessens their control of it, and causes the built up momentum of the attack to throw the rest of their body forward. It’s a bit more grounded compared to some of the wild stuff that’s seen in Engage, but still very satisfying to watch imo.
Oh yeah that's a really good one actually. Where a lot of the animations do lack weight due to the dullish sound effects, I think that one does such a great job with the animation
animations weren't bad just repetitive. Every weapon type had a max total of like 7 animations, one for each scenario (first attack, follow up, ranged attack, crit, so on and so forth). So they were sort of... predictable? like if i take a look at the combat stats i can tell you exactly how the cobat animation is going to look, and that feels sort of... robotic...? idk
*See's Claude's animations* THAT'S WHY HE'S THE MVP!!! THAT'S WHY HE'S THE GOAT!! THE GOOOAT!! Edit: Also Barbarossa has the best drip you can't tell me otherwise
One thing I'm excited about with engage is that they're taking out the cutouts from crits. I feel like they distracted from the actual animation a bit too much personally.
I don't think it's the animations themselves they make some of these feel a bit weak. I actually think it's the particle effects and sound. Hitting an armour Knight with an axe should have a CRUNCHY metallic clang, but theres just a fairly generic hit noise for all damage except maybe magic.
